    We have to remember that male lions don't live that long in the wild; 12 years, on average. So, Cameron is beating the odds, even for a lion in captivity. The older they get, the more prone to illnesses they become. It's very difficult to watch animals suffer, and cats will go for a long time before letting on that there's something wrong. It is heartbreaking to think of Cameron and Zabu separated for any amount of time. They've been together their entire lives! I will continue to pray for both of them, especially Cameron who seems to be ailing. Sending love to two of my favorite cats!🦁💕🐯

      Male lions have to constantly fight to hold on to his pride and territory from other roaming males. they often get injured badly or even get killed. so in some odd way, lions get better life in inclosure situation as long as they are treated well.

    I just read his bio page. You lost him on the exact same day we lost our Shadow, a 16 year old all black tomcat. Today, July 17, we lost our female cat, Kaitlyn, who was 15. She had asthma and wasn't responding to the meds, she stopped eating and this afternoon around 5:30, she suddenly went into a seizure. We rushed her to the vet, but she died in my wife's arms before we got to the vet. RIP Cameron, Shadow, and Kaitlyn. You left paw prints on our hearts.

      +The Servant, When Cameron had his exam, the vet did check his teeth, did blood work, x-rays and an ultrasound. There was no specific cause to be found for why he is not eating as much as he was. The vet put him on several medications which seem to be helping. He is eating better the last few days. He has been a picky eater for many years. The keepers offer meat of different kinds several times a day trying to get him to eat. He also has the human equivalent of Lou Gerhigs disease. He is almost 18 years old or (18x6=108) 108 in human years.

      +Katrina Cade, the mane of a lion is testosterone driven. You can read why Cameron lost his mane by reading his bio at : BigCatRescue.org/Cameron

    Potentially stupid question is stupid, but have you ever rescued a big cat that turned out to be pregnant just after you recovered her, or are all rescues already neutered/spayed ...?

    • @DailyBigCat
      @DailyBigCat  6 лет назад +24

      +nigelft, that has never happened at BCR. When they arrive, if they arrive with another cat, they are separated until they are spayed or neutered. Most do not show up already fixed. BCR does not believe in breeding, so cats are never put in an enclosure with another cat unless or both is fixed.

      Silly ol' me conflated feral/stray domestic cats, whom are occasionly rescued being heavily pregnant, with their much larger cousins ...

      nigelft There are other sanctuaries like the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado that get pregnant lions or bears and they let them raise their cubs. I do think they spay them though. That place is huge and wonderful too.

    • @DailyBigCat
      @DailyBigCat  5 лет назад +1

      +Rashanna Stephens, Cameron lion lost his mane when he was neutered because he was aggressive towards keepers and Zabu (a white tiger whom he had been raised with and they were quite bonded) when keepers would come around. When you take the testosterone away, the male lion loses his mane. It was decided it was better he lose his mane than be miserable trying to protect his soul mate. • @DailyBigCat
      @DailyBigCat  5 лет назад +4

      +adnan naemaz, what you are seeing is what fits in an iphone screen. The cages for these cats start at 1800 sq feet/cage and go up from there. Each cat has multiple cages or "bubbles" so the cages are bigger than most peoples homes. Yet, we agree they should not be caged at all...but if born in captivity they can never go free. You can learn more about our cages and why these captive cats can never go free at: bigcatrescue.org/cages and bigcatrescue.org/gofree

    why is his mane missing?

    • @DailyBigCat
      @DailyBigCat  6 лет назад +7

      +Kushal Singh, Cameron was neutered several years ago because he had become so aggressive towards the keepers who would come near Zabu. The male lion's mane is testosterone driven so when he was neutered, he lost his mane. He is much happier now though and that is what matters. Here is his story: bigcatrescue.org/Cameron

    Why doesn’t “he” have a mane? As a normal male lion would. I guess could be malnutrition? I’ve never seen a male lion without a mane of hair. Really curious.

    • @DailyBigCat
      @DailyBigCat  6 лет назад +1

      +Petrosmalk, he is almost 18 years old (they only live to be 10-12 in the wild). 18x6=106 in human years. He has been a picky eater for years and had stopped eating. He also has the human equivalent of Lou Gehrigs disease. He had an exam by the vet, Dr. Justin Boorstein earlier this week. The keepers and the vet are doing everything they know to do to help him feel better.

      I agree it is very sad. The Guatemala Circus boys, Max, Simba and Kimba lived in these for years in the circus before being rescued.....and were fed chicken feet for their diet. Needless to say since they were rescued, they are doing much better!

      +Jim Clarke, Cameron and Zabu have a large enclosure of about 5,000 sq feet. While that is a large enclosure, big cats are not meant live out their lives in cages. However, if born in captivity, they can never go free and must spend the rest of their lives in cages. You can read more at: bigcatrescue.org/gofree, bigcatrescue.org/cages. Rashanna Stephens A lion’s mane is testosterone driven and Cameron got neutered after being too aggressive to the keepers. He originally just had a vasectomy to keep his mane and still be with Zabu but then he was getting too possessive of Zabu so either his balls went or he would be separated from Zabu. But hey they are now in Cat Heaven so maybe he has his mane there...

    Why does BCR not believe in breeding? I understand speed breeding and intentionally breeding by humans is wrong but if the animals want to breed, they can breed. It is their natural instinct.

    • @DailyBigCat
      @DailyBigCat  5 лет назад +4

      +AcidCorgi Draws, Big Cat Rescue does not believe in breeding because these captive cats can never go free. They belong in the wild. Why breed for a life in captivity? There is a lot of information at the following links. I encourage you to look them over. Reasons you might not have thought of before. BigCatRescue.org/gofree, BigCatRescue.org/breedingkills. The main reason people breed these cats in captivity is for cub petting to use the cubs for 4 weeks of their lives to then only sell them or give them away to live in back yards or basements the rest of their lives. CubTruth.com. We are working to stop the private ownership of these big cats and stop cub petting in the US by getting the Big Cat Public Safety Act passed. You can learn more about this at: BigCatAct.com
