  • Steven Spielberg directs the movie to Ernest Cline's novel - Ready Player One. It's choc full of references, nostalgia and tributes... but is there a movie worth seeing underneath all of that?

    7:00 The movie did. There was a short scene with Sorento at a board meeting, where they discuss filling all available space on the HUD with popup adds. Thats why they wanted to control the OASIS.

    I admit, I first learned of the book through the first trailer of the film adaptation. I was interested, and excited, so I checked it out at the local library. It's the worst piece of media I've ever come across. I became conflicted about whether or not I should see the movie, which what got me to read the book in the first place. How could even a talented director like Spielberg make an epic film salvaged from sh** material? This review gave me the reassurance I needed.
    I agree that (at 9:00) Star Wars being a part of the book's universe is a problem, even if it falls into being "nitpicky". The book was published in 2011, before Disney bought the rights from Lucas in 2012. However, this new generation for the franchise has already made a huge impact on recent culture that it creates major continuity on this fictional dystopia set in 2044. "Rogue One" might not have existed then, but it does now, and just doesn't work anymore.
    I also agree with the point that there was no real consequence on the stacks' explosion is accurate to the book, and the example of "The Room" (10:00) is perfectly accurate.

    Didn't like the trailer to it, but my coworkers hyped it up to me that I'd "totally" be into it; I left the theater pissed off that it had been so thoroughly built up, and there was so little payoff with it.

    Amazing how many people are defending the movie and calling on nitpicking. The movie is incredibly poorly written. We never see the effect VR has on the outside people, characters don't speak to each other- they only speak for exposition, the movie hits every cliche possible, the "ugly irl" girl is, you know, a hollywood beauty, the bad guys have enough money to just buy the game and servers, someone can just make a better game than the oasis, etc. Everything happens too fast and there isn't time to develop anything.

    My problem is that they arn't following the true theme of the book, they should try to explain that most of the things in the plot come from the 80's because that's WHAT the contest to find the egg was based around. And the book is not as cgi and all that shit, all the characters look like real humans, in the book at least. All of the evil boss people are some guy in business suit, and they keep to a more realistic setting then only cyberpunk shit. And there is no rebellion, and everyone still stays in the Oasis even after the story is over. That is why I am concerned for this movie. This post probably makes no sense at all and if you want to you can ignore it.

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  6 лет назад

      Stuff and things nah it makes sense haha. The movie would probably have to deviate from the book to make it a movie, but I think it could have been done better.

    I really liked the book. It was an absolutely fun read.
    The heavy focus on the 80s was also in the books, though more on games, but I think most people just wouldn't get those obscure reference.
    Actually most of the problems were explained better in the books, but... Well... You shouldn't have to read the book to understand the movie.
    I might still watch the movie.

      Understand but he source material should be respected and I know you can't place the whole book on the screen because they are two different mediums so it requires great skill in translating the essence of the source material to film. Has Spielberg succeeded? Box office will tell it always does.

      If you loved the book, don't waste your time. I'm a HUGE fan of the book, but the movie sucked! All of the important things were left out leaving you with a movie where you ask "Did they even read the book"? Don't waste your time.

  • @L3x4Pr0ne
    @L3x4Pr0ne 6 лет назад

    Sounds like they made this movie for those who read the book, rather than much of a stand alone. They explain a lot of your questions/comments, etc.
    Might appease the readers but not the stand alone movie goers?

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  6 лет назад

      That could be true. Thing is this review is getting downloaded by the book readers. Sure, you'll enjoy the movie more if you've read the book, but the movie should be good and clear enough without background reading.

      Film Rant i was just trying to say you are nit-picking, as this film is much better than those two.. however, you always have great insight, so cheers, mate. Agree to disagree?

    • @FilmRant
      @FilmRant  6 лет назад

      I'll agree that some of these are nit picks, but I think some are pretty big issues. I enjoyed all 3 films you've mentioned though. I can't judge a film on whether it's just fun and entertaining or not, I gotta get down to the nitty gritty. However, if it is lots of fun I can let some of the gripes slide, but I thought Ready Player One's problems were a bit too big to ignore.

    • @slater-cguy
      @slater-cguy 6 лет назад

      Film Rant i dont think it's a perfect film, but the problems with Last Jedi are legion, plus this film is creating new territory. The references explain why people have lost their personalities, and rely on pop culture to create their personalities... I respect your opinion, but I disagree... I'll see it again with your criticism in mind

    • @slater-cguy
      @slater-cguy 6 лет назад

      Film Rant also, what do you mean you can't judge a film if it is entertaining? You want every film to be Tarkovsky's Solaris? If you enjoy something, you really feel the need to excivate your enjoyment with over-analysis?
      Plus, remember, Kubrick felt Spielberg was a singular talent... do you possess some insight Kubrick lacked? Not trying to get combative, I think your insights are always great and I always look forward to your interpretations... honestly, it is great to see an opposing view-point backed by logic, cheers..

      If you really think about how the oasis works and how it fits in with the real world. The reality falls apart. There's a point I didnt mention in the review. People are running round the streets playing the game. How are they not running into traffic? Into walls? Falling down hills or off cliffs? Running into train tracks etc.

      To be fair... It is meant to be a game, so the use of heavy CGI is warranted I think. I still see how it can be off putting to some though.

    Nah dude. You haven't read the book so you're judging it based on no context. It sounds pretty good from the snippets you described. Sorrento is basically corporate commander, the oasis can simulate reality with the advanced haptic rigs and mecha godzilla is but one of the many awesome 80's, 90's references. Hope to see as many from the book as possible! Especially Black tiger and the Demi-lich!

    • @FilmRant

      That's all good but this is a movie. I shouldn't need to read the book to get the movie. I'm also not judging the book in this review. I'm purely reviewing the movie on its own merit.

      Film Rant Spoiler from book look away dont read.
      Ok,
      Here is the book in a nutshell ,
      Wade(parzafold) Aech,Artemis,Shoto,Daito, are the main good guys. They make up the high five. Sorrento and the IOI are evil corporation. Holiday and Marrow made the oasis .
      The real world sucks everything is run down . Wade starts out in Oklahoma City in the stacks. Lives with his aunt , her boyfriend is a jerk , she uses Wade for meal vouchers . Wade loves everything 80s because his idol Holiday maker of the Oasis grew up in the 80s .
      First key Book.
      Wade figured out the copper key was on the same planet and his school ....well a plant thats just schools more or less. He made the connection in Latin class. He finds the dungeon like one from dungeons and dragons and enters it . Makes his way to a room where the Lich king a powerful skeleton being is waiting for him. He tells Wade he has to beat him in a match best of 3. The game Joust . Wade eventuality wins. On his way out he runs into Artemis . Wade has a huge crush on her she is a well known blogger. She asks what the hell hes doing there . He tries to lie and play it off. She sees the scoreboard changed has his name on it. She sorta flips out and casts a spell so wade cant leave the dungeon for a set time.
      Aech , Wades best friend is freaking out , wants info. Wade helps.
      Wade has to do a entire game on the movie war games. Thats neat, wade and Artemis get invited to Og Marrows ( co creator) birthday party in the detracted globe. Wade is falling in love with Artemis. IOI tries to crash the party. Wade tries to tell Artemis he loves her , she more or less crushes this idea saying " we were never dating , we are not together " .
      Wade gets depressed unplugged for a while . IOI figure out where wade lives after wade goes and mocks Sorrento at the IOI . The IOI blow up Wades home but hes not in it. Wade moves to Cleveland. Artemis and Aech find the jade key , Aech tells Wade how to get it because Wade helped Aech get copper . Wade , Shoto , Diato are becoming friends . Do mission's together. Diato gets a Ultraman mount . Later the IOI find Diato in real life and toss him out a 40 story window. Shoto gives Wade Ultra Man.
      Things happen Wade and everyone get crystal key but cant unlock door because Sorrento has a shield around it. The IOI comes after Wade again. Wade now works for IOI trying to pay off a debt. Wade hacks IOI and escapes . Og Marrow helps whats left of the high 5 has them gather at his house. Wade meets is best friend Aech for the first time in real life. Realised Aech is a black woman and is gay. Wade dosent care about that because Aech is and will always be his best friend. They get to Ogs house Wade wants to see Artemis but can't they never seen eachother outside the Oasis . Wade gets hooked up. Big battle happens its Voltron vs Gundom vs Ultraman vs MechaGodzilla . Wade beats Sorrento. Sorrento used a orb that blows everything up . Everyone dies ....but Wade who won a magic quarter playing a perfect game of Pac man. The quarter was a free life. Wade unlocks door. Solves a puzzle about how Holliday and Marrow were friends until Marrow married the only girl he loved. Wade has a reenactment of Monty Python Holly Grail . Wade finds the egg. Ghost of Holliday tells wade more or less the Oasis is great but real life connections are more fulfilling than virtual ones. Wade finally meets Artemis in real life. Artemis is sitting next to a fountain with her hair covering half her face. Wade brushes the hair a side revealing most of Artemis face is covered in whats called port wine . She looks away Wade tells her she is the most beautiful thing hes ever seen. She disagrees. They have a moment book ends.
      So to me the book yes has references but the book is about stopping corporate greed , making friends , finding love. And not just wow look at her or him kind of love real connecting on a mental level love. Its worth a read

    to state that the references do not add to the core plot of the movie is ridiculous. The entire culture of the world is in reflection of the 80's do to Haliday's love of the 80's and his theming of the oasis. To not see a world themed full of 80's refrences would be a farce. It is the core of the plot, the world culture is built around these refrences, not to mention they stated in the beginning of the film. ITS not what you do, It's WHO you can be. These refrences and identities they provide are the freedoms they enjoyed in a public domain........... how much would serento charge to be batman or conan the barbarian..... this is exactly what they were all fighting against. They are fighting to be those identities. really man, think a little deeper, read the plot, not just gooo ooooooooooo and aaaaaaaaa.

    • @rleastor6760
      @rleastor6760 6 лет назад

      ok now im really annoyed, you say the refrences do not contribute to the core of the plot and in the same sentance you state if you take the refrences away the plot is really weak............... which one is it?????

      Yes but a movie should be able to stand on its own 2 feet without the audience having to read the book. Sure, it's an adaptation, but I shouldn't be required to do additional reading to understand.
