I really like how you keeping it real. Showing the mishaps and all. Noone is perfect, nothing is perfect and you are not afraid to show that. Thank you for your honesty and great videos.
i think if you were looking over your shoulder in the direction of the turn, it would go a lot smoother and you would spin it 180 no problem. at least that’s what helped me the most when learning the spin uturn
Another great vid Ian. I love that every second of this feels exactly like it actually happens when out on the trail. It’s never easy, pr pretty, and sometimes it’s much harder than it seems. Well done.
In regular, non-trail riding, the uphill/downhill dynamics are also important when pulling into a downhill perpendicular or angle parking space with any heavy bike, especially when loaded up on cross-country jaunts. I always back into a parking spot that runs downhill. Much easier to allow gravity to ease the bike backwards downhill feathering your brake. Pulling out of the parking space (uphill) is not only easier, but safer with far better visibility.
For the side-stand maneuver, perhaps carrying a 2"x2" firm piece of plastic or metal/aluminum would help make it easier to pivot and keep the stand from digging into the ground.
Tearing up the terrain is exactly why there are so many gates. It is possible to ride (and turn around) without tearing up terrain. Multi-point is the best option. Damaging trails creates more hate & less freedom to dude places.
When spinning on a stand. Lock the bars to the right to get a better grip on the handlebar and always spin it clockwise, otherwise you are risking bike weight collapsing the stand and dropping the bike on you.
Not sure this is smart. Pushing the handle away from you, and then swinging the weight on the side stand against you and pushing away again? Doesn’t make much sense to me, thinking of loosing control.
I need to practice my spins turns. It looks easier than in practice. On my DR650 vs. my DL1000. The DL has much more power and is heavier, so it takes a bit more faith 😜. Great video as always. Thanks for putting this together
Curious on your opinion and upcoming review of the AT, I am collecting mine on Friday, AT AS DCT non ES. Thanks for the useful tips approaching a dead end road, never thought to use gravity running backwards, makes complete sense!
Currently i know of about 4 local riders who have broken bones on big ADV bikes out trying to learn the ways of the 500lb pigs. I know its trendy and its the thing to do, learn special skills play special games................but if one of these things goes down the wrong way bones are easily broken. It seems like older guys are the ones who buy into the big bike thing the most, maybe not the best time in life to take on a 500lb dirtbike. A simple tip over can have repercussions.
I’ve had to use all these methods and they work but they don’t always go smooth. I did the ride up to a slope and let it fall back method once and the front tire sunk into some really deep sand and it was a bitch to get it out, gotta have these methods in your brain tool box

Getting my first Africa Twin DCT in a couple weeks. Really appreciate these types of videos

Did the first method the other day. Worked like charm.

What skills do you struggle with? What kind of instructional videos do you want next? I am thinking - tight switchbacks!
Ruts!
Big puddles over mud bottom.
Big puddles over mud bottom.
Talking to girls
Lofting the front tire over obstacles!

nice. i bent the AT side stand doing the spin method. switch to the heftier camel side stand.
Great video Ian..
If possible.... the first example seems most efficient.
Thanks
Absolutely
Agree - I also frontbrake hard when I get to the top of the high side - the rebound of the forks gives me a headstart on the rollback
And here, all this time I thought you were perfect. I'm sad. But I'm glad you're ok. Great vid. Keep them coming.
Waiting impatiently to see that new KLR review....😜🙏 keep up the good work!!!
You and me both!

Um but the stand is on the left side for an anticlockws rotation- you have you hands on the throttle.
Thanks. Takes me back some time but is always useful to improve my knowledge just in case!
Glad to help!
Thanks, sometimes I date gravity too. She loves all of, but some more than others. LoL
Great tips and keeping it real. That's why I always look forward to your videos. Thanks and keep it coming!

I think that was some good instruction.
I love the way you keep it real 😂
Awesome content as usual
Thanks a lot. Very useful techniques
Thank you for showing you "Setting" the bike down.
Drop your bike early, drop your bike often.
Nice tips bro,i thought that you'll not recommend the u-turn technique using the side stand especially on soft ground, ride safe!
very cool video indeed, cheers V!
And YES the van can go slower! Patience Grass-Big-Rock-Hopper!😂
thank you for your content

Great video.
You should review the mototrek episode on U Turns get some practice and try this again.
5:23 what causes the blinkers to blink that fast?
Be careful spinning an Africa Twin on it’s side stand . The stands are made from cheese and will twist/bend very easily.
Thanks

Now try this with a loaded GSA in a muddy sloping descent
nope
Is this guy Kip from Napoleon Dynamite?
