Rules, Procedures, Self-discipline and Reminders

Whilst it would be nice to live in a World and operate in a workplace without constraints, I was thinking this morning about the last few weeks and how important *Rules, Procedures, Self-discipline and Reminders* really are
Rules
The violence against policemen and policewomen and the damage to innocent peoples property and businesses in the UK in the last few weeks underlines the basic importance of Law & Order - some people can be vile, and no justification exists for such behaviour.
Procedures
A young girl died after a catalogue of ‘errors’ and failure to follow procedures
Self-discipline
On researching agricultural fatalities in the UK in 2023, a number of deaths on ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) would have been prevented if riders were wearing helmets
Reminders
A reminder mechanism, whether that’s safety briefings, tool box talks or canteen discussions can serve as heartfelt reminders of why Rules, Procedures and Self-discipline are a needed part of life and work if we want to do our best to prevent serious injuries, ill-health and fatalities
Approach and Delivery
With the right approach and delivery, Rules, Procedures, Self-discipline and Reminders are not dirty words*, they do not turn automatically turn workplaces into a *parent and child nanny state.
We are human beings who ‘go off piste’ … we do far better when we’ve got each others back
