i like how they taped the ends of the wire to not reveal what's inside as it would defeat the purpose of cutting it open and wasting our time. Nice one lads.
Pasha32511 it's taped for protection - metal ends could be sharp. Definitely easier to peel the tape off instead of cutting. But they cut it for the video. I'm sure no one thought "we're gonna tape the ends so you will be forced to cut it".
I just found this channel, I have worked for Internet service providers since 1998, the Internet hasn't used satellites in a long time because of the latency (the light speed time delay of transmitting a signal up to the satellite and back down to its destination). The hardest part about fiber optic connections is signal loss, so the cables you cut open are connected, at intervals, to repeaters that are also waterproof and designed to work at the bottom of the ocean. The fibers themselves don't really need to be upgraded that often for an increase in speed, it's these repeaters and the endpoints that need to be upgraded to increase the speed of a run. Food for thought.
We cut things open on our channel. Nat and Lo already had an incredibly insightful video of whats inside, they wanted to challenge us to see if we could cut it in half.
cade mayberry Why would you ask is the saw necessary? By now you shoulda noticed the saw everything open, pokeballs, lincoln's balls, and golf balls. Not just balls, even an olympic torch...

there are multiple videos on yt now and when you posted... you wanna know something, search it out. never been easier to get answers for the a complete laymen or virtually anything, take advantage man, take advantage.
I hear ya, I'm just saying even though we pay for certain things and expect something outstanding in return, doesn't mean we can't be grateful for the amazing technology it is and show some patience when it isn't 100% working. Appreciate you watching!

Being grateful for technology is one thing but your internet being up and running is like water flowing nowadays. We depend on it; our work, social life, entertainment and school are all connected to it. So when it fails to work properly nobody is going to be grateful, they will call their ISP and try to get it fixed. I don't suppose you would wait calmly if you couldn't upload your videos fast and trouble free. Being connected is not free and overpriced in most of the world, if you pay good money for something you also expect it to work properly.
My son is a merchant mariner who works on a cable laying skip. He is an engineer responsible for feeding the cable to lay on it under bottom of the ocean (depending upon the sea depth) at the right tension to avoid injuring workers or breaking/tangling the cable. That's over Simplified but the job requires a 4 year engineering degree and a USCG license he must keep current. It's a very high tech process sand a very unique job. He is out to sea across many continents all the over the world anywhere from 75 days to over 4 months at a time. A very cool job!

You know, as a telecommunications engineering drafter for the past 6 years designing routes for fiber optic cable throughout the Midwest (based in Chicago) I only just recently learned that there are fiber optic cables spanning across the freaking oceans to allow us to communicate with one another cross-continentally.
Assuming you can dive deep enough and not die from the pressure, and also assuming you can cut this behemoth of a cable, I’m sure said person would probably go to prison for a very long time.
"I had this thought the other day, like where does the internet come from." I swear to god they are like cavemen that are just starting to question existence. Did he not go to school or is he just dumbing things down for a younger audience?
Great episode! I manufacture medium voltage cable. My job is to install the jacket compound by use of an extruder. I've jacketed cable that is almost 5' in diameter. There is a lot of work that goes into making cable. While cable is not that exciting, it is sort of fun to see what's inside of it if you are not already familiar with it. The big cable I have made is three conductor, full of fillers and fun stuff with a thick jacket on it so that alligators and other critters cannot bite through it.
I wouldn't make-do with an abrasive blade on a chop saw intended for wood cutting if I were either of you. :-( Use a proper tool (e.g. sawzall for instance)
I know, but the instruction manual states that you should not use abrasive wheels because it's a 'Miter Saw', hence the dust bag. The bag and the lower guard can be badly damaged by the sparks and so rendering the tool's warranty void. There's a difference between an 'Abrasive Cut-Off Saw' and a "Miter Saw' but both work in similar ways. Different blades require different guards. For instance, an Abrasive Cut-Off Saw has a spark deflector at the rear, an adjustable vice for clamping the material and an abrasive cut-off wheel that's guarded only at 180 degrees. A Miter Saw has the blade fully surrounded at 360 degrees by means of a retractable lower guard for safety reasons. A toothed blade that is only half guarded & half exposed can be twice as dangerous as that of an abrasive wheel, hence why they should never be used on saws intended for cutting ferrous metal with an abrasive wheel.
They are called fiber optic cables they use flexible glass rods that are insulated so light travels through it untouched we control that light and transform it into data
They didn’t go all the way in. The colored parts are protective layers around the glass inside and then there are at least two layers of glass. The light is only in a 10 micron core in the middle.
Why didn't they just look at either of the already cut ends of the cable rather than cutting it again in the middle? I know that it's their thing but the extra cutting was pointless.
The video he's talking about at 5:21, is an interview on Conan o'brien show with Louis C.K called "Everything is awesome and nobody's happy" which i urge people to go watch.
How do tens of millions of people use really fast internet with that small amount of fiberglass fibers for all of them combined? Isn't an ethernet cable thicker than the payload of that big cable?
Packed away somewhere I have a foot of a tether from MBARI (Monterrey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) which they used to connect their remotely piloted submersible vehicles with the command ship on the surface. It has a bright yellow jacket, with 5 electrical conductors to feed 3-phase power down to the submersible vehicle, and in the core 8 optical fibers. Two were used for ethernet, two for video from the cameras, and there were some dedicated to the control system which piloted the vehicle. The cable was custom made for MBARI by BIW (Boston Insulated Wire). The cable was wound on a large, motorized drum on the deck of the command ship. To maintain connection while the drum rotated, in its center were 5 slip rings for the electrical conductors, and 8 rotating optical joints for the fibers. The was a short piece of cable coming out of the center of the drum on the other side of the rotating couplers which went to the control room below deck. They could not put any twists in the cable as they reeled it in, like the kinks which inevitably seemed to get in old-style telephone handset cords. They had a computer which kept track of how many times the the cable had been twisted by the motion of the submersible and the ship, and they had to sail the submersible and/or the ship in circles as the cable was reeled in to be sure there were no twists!
why would you cut it in half when you already have two ends that are cut??

György Kozmér, it means that they had the option to do it but didn’t.
I think he is referring to Bsaint writing "could of" instead of "could have" which is an incorrect substitution. It is either could've or could have.
He said in beginning that he wants to cut his own cross section

yup. they're awful. they're just a huge monopoly :/
And the people that work at *Spectrum* really hate the customers. Like really it shouldn't take half an hour to connect your wifi
Why would u think it would be satellite, it would get interfered with so much and be slow, so cables only would be fast
And have you never seen them fixing or replacing the internet cables to your house!?
It's also not a surprise it's fibre optics because it has to be fast, it can't be DSL cable it would be to slow for everyone in the world
