  • If I were to describe The Dow Event Center as a hockey arena, in one word, it would be "functional." The barn in Saginaw, MI isn't going to win any beauty contests but she gets the job done. She also just might play host to the 2024 Memorial Cup, and the facility overall offers a number of intriguing possibilities to that end.

Saginaw Spirit photographer here, I've been waiting for Kitchener to come to Saginaw this season for your arena tour. I really enjoy these, keep them up! Good job on the Saginaw tour. A couple notes: when you poked out of the media room into that extra lobby, there is also a 2300 seat theater there as well. On the opposite side of the media deck there is a corporate deck for sponsors and scouts, etc., and there is a suite over the endzone on the upper level too. There were plans to put suites in above the seats on the north end of the building back before 2008, but the recession put an end to that - hard to say what might be added for the Memorial Cup if we get it, but I understand better wifi is on the table.
Great tour. Definitely using these to scout other arenas I might visit.

love the insider insight here, Eric. Thanks! I don't think the Dow will ever win a beauty contest (no offense) but it's got everything it needs to host the championship. Good luck! And see you next Sunday. Haha.

The Dow, originally the Saginaw Civic Center, was actually modeled after the Metropolitan Sports Center, the original home of the Minnesota North Stars, though much, much smaller. Wendler Arena, was definitely utilitarian in nature, while Heritage Theater was more "fancy". During those years, the civic center was connected to the parking ramp across the street as well as the Downtown Saginaw mall, all by enclosed elevated walkways. In the 2001 renovations, the bridges were removed to make way for the round atrium.

Jet's Pizza is all over. Eighteen other states including Michigan. I'm based in Minneapolis, right down the street from a Jet's location. Love. It.

I grew-up with SRO crowds at Petes games through the 70s, 80s and 90s. From your carefully done videos I have come to learn not all of these OHL barns have regular healthy attendance. It's a stretch to finance and build newer larger facilities when the hockey fans don't routinely materialize. Maybe the time has come for a Can-Am hockey league, to include more teams in Ontario, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. That said, in Ontario the OHL should take a serious look at current team locations that don't have supportive attendance, and redistribute those franchises into other local markets more ravenous for OHL hockey.

This place looks perfect to host a Memorial Cup! Saginaw has a really good record this year, but how many players will they lose next year? I think the CHL really needs to map out and make it a priority to have competitive host teams. Maybe they do that already, but there have been some really bad host teams.

Saginaw has a very young team and has the latest exceptional status talent in Micheal Misa on the team and he is tearing up the league as a 15 year old. They will lose a few veterans this year but they will remain stocked up on young talent for years to come.

Saginaw is well-positioned for 2023-24, and most OHL observers seem to agree that their roster will be the best among the bidders for the 2024 Memorial Cup. While there have definitely been some flops over the years, the CHL does a pretty good job of ensuring the host team is competitive.
