Love seeing some analysis of the mechanics. This was actually only improved in the following TW game, Rome 2. There, units can brace against cavalry if they remain still, but only when you turn off fire at will on their precursor javelins
And in TW Attila that mechanic goes from strength to strength, seeing as not bracing and bracing can make the difference between being flattened by cav and standing stiff like a bundle of nails, plus I think there Fire at Will no longer adversely affects unit bracing. Extra points if you've got spear infantry with Expert Charge Defence against a shock cavalry unit to reflect their charge bonus as well as stand their impact!
Also, people say a lot about the invencible ashigaru spear wall, try a nodachi with banzai, but do the smallest front line possible, like 4 men in the front, and charge the yari wall head on.
Or you can just, you know, shoot them with a bow Or guns Or send regular katana samurai and they’ll do fine They’re obviously not invincible, but things they can achieve under command of a skilled player for such low cost makes them the best unit in the game
@@fareastslav by the time the AI start using katana samurai in the campaign unless you have long yari ashigaru the regular yari ashigaru will be able to beat them with some experince which they will have in the late game from the castle upgrades and the tech tree also as you said they can achive many things while also beaing very cheap to get
Just Oda Long Yari Ashigaru spear wall is invincible. Standard Yari Ashigaru spear wall could be broken easily, even Loan Sword Ashigaru can do it: ruclips.net/video/rlAbc0bKXXU/видео.html Katana Samurai can do it easier: ruclips.net/video/PBvrqA08YLQ/видео.html
Counter change is when you have enough charge bonus to do it! Try the same test with katana cav vs nodachi, they will win with counter charge and lose without counter charge.
nice, makes sense the small about of charge bonus is roughly equal the small amount of positional static value. have you done cycle charging versus one off charge? is cycling worth the fatigue/ micro(apm) / time spent turning out while being hit by the enemy?
Not yet. I think cycle-charge is better for Spear Cavalry (Light Cav, Yari Cav, Naginata Monk Cav...). One charge then melee is better for Sword Cavalry (General, Katana Cav...)
@@TotalWar1vs1 It's great, you answer questions I have about the game, and you do it in a very controlled environment. It's quite the fan service honestly
not the same totally you can see that the katana samurai that counter charged managed to get a little bit faster kills but died faster while the other one managed to live longer because the impact happend after
isn't katana samurai about the only thing katana cav can beat 1v1? wouldn't a better test have been yari samurai? or hell, yari cav . . . yari cav should delete katana samurai on the charge so testing counter charge would make more sense . . .

also to be clear since you’re losing the trade it’s best to drag it out, so standing still is better

If they get into melee at the same time (my timing was bad), I think both results will be the same

if katana samurai can win the fight, it makes no sense to to make this test.
