Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I also love that you had little ones in helping with cleanup (as you go!). Great for those of us with a gas dryer in CA that need to have 18" by state law.
@@AroundtheHouse Yeah - apparently if Home Depot delivers your gas dryer, they will NOT install it unless you have it stacked (we did initially) or an 18" shelf. Standard pedestals are 15" It's meant to help alleviate the risk of explosion from vehicle impact + if there is a leak, gas pools to the ground. Having dryer on the ground = hazard due to ignition. 18" is safer.
The trim work is nice. Personally I would build a 2x4 frame first to support the weight. How do you prevent the machines from vibrating off of the platform.
This is too big for my particular setup. However, I think I can make this work as two halves. I have a sink in between the two, so I need two platforms. Edit: You also have an insanely impressive plethora of tools.
This would be a great modification, good idea. Most of my tools were bought off Craigslist and some weren’t running so I got them for a great price. Just a tip if you’re looking to grow your collection. 😀
nice build. love the sturdy build, choice of materials 2 modifications I'd make. 1 add a waterproof tub to the top for that day you hope never comes 2 bolt the w/d to the base like all the bases sold in stores. Washers especially like to walk around.
Hi - Thanks for the great video. Now that this has been in place for a few years - how stable has it been? My main concern was looking at the video how the bottom brace against the floor was not directly supporting the 2 braces/separators in the middle compartments supporting the top. Any issues with stability or warping since the build?
Great questions and yes always good to check in after a few years. This is still being used and has held up great. No sagging or wobbling. Still solid.
Very nice job but I was looking for something simple. If you have the time, then this is great. I think I might go buy the 27" stands now and just build some 2" platform extra. The above I guess will put me in the same range of just buying from the store. Time/Money
You build like a girl! Like a badass righteous girl! Totally awesome build your hubby married up! Time to upgrade to Makita with skills like that! Congratulation on a great build....BTW I think I might build it but add pull out sliding trays for the soap and stuff.
Very pleasantly surprised to find your video. I'm partway into building a pedestal from the exact same plans! Your clamping technique worked a lot better than mine. 😅 And I'm to the point of adding the bottom piece of ply and haven't glued anything. I'm too terrified that I'll mess something up for glue. 😭😅
That’s so fun you’re building using the same plans. I did find they left out some small details that I really had to think through. Clamping is always a bit tricky with something this big. Have a great build and thank you for commenting 😀
Thanks for the video/instruction. Just bought a new washer/dryer, front load, replacing our 20 year old set. I'm not sure I can do this project, but you make me want to try and save money... the model brand pedestals are expensive.
This could be a good summer project for me in my garage. However I worry on how to lift the two units into place on top. They are heavy and two persons might not be enought and there no space to get hands underneath. Please advise how you did the lifting.
This was a very real problem Richard. I got these all made and delivered to my friends place thinking the appliance delivery people would set them in place but they couldn’t due to regulations. My husband and friend used lifting straps to put them in place.
That's interesting. Not sure what a lifting straps was and googled it. I think I will go ahead and when the time comes figure it out. It going to be a small room and worst the new appliances will already be inside that room before install.

In the process of building one based on this video. Two questions: (1) what size nail are you using in the nail gun (2) what is there make/model of your dowel jig?
Joey Arteaga Thanks. I built this for a friend so sadly I can’t give my personal review. I followed up with him and he said it’s built rock solid. It has a little vibration but he thinks it’s due to uneven floors. I hope that helps. I’ll try to get over and check it out soon.
I’m surprised this is strong enough to hold the weight of a full washer. The matching pedestals are too high for where my washer has to go. (The door wouldn’t be able to be opened all of the way 😲). Has anyone else built one from this video? TIA for any useful feedback.
The nice thing about the plans I followed here is that you can customize them. In fact I talk about how I made them smaller in height in this video. Hope this can help you with your project. 🙂
I enlisted 2 guys. Important to note, the appliance delivery guys will not put them on it since they don’t want to be liable for anything. So you will have to lift the appliances on yourself 😩
Great question. I built these years ago and was just at my friends house yesterday and they are still going strong without any issues. I’m sure all washers and dryers are different so might be an issue with some. They have the front loaders we have that don’t ever move around.
OMG I am impressed ! Came out very nice. How did you handle the Duct for the Dryer? Did you have to make a hole into the back top portion of the pedestal to connect it to the wall or was your duct connection on the wall higher than the pedestal? New SUB
Great question Gilbert, I never thought about it but others may face this issue as well. The dryer duct for the one I made was hire on the wall so even with the pedestal it connected right in. I didn’t need to cut a hole. So happy to have you as a sub 😊
@@AroundtheHouse Yes there are 20 different ways to connect a Dryer to the Dryer vent so it could be anything from a 5" hole or a square notch for to 90 degree angled vents. My vent is closer to the floor so I would have to cut out a hole on the top and back side of pedestal. Thanks again.
Came across your video and am attempting this project this weekend. Thanks for taking the time to document your project. It will be invaluable to me over the next two days. I'm curious what you went with for the overall total height of your pedestal? Also I was curious what the purpose of the recess of the kick plate is for? I noticed you covered the gap with a trim piece at the end of your video.
This is a great project to tackle right now. I made it about an 1" or 1 1/2" shorter to fit the space. Sorry don't remember exactly. Good call on the recess kick plate. I just followed the directions but I'm with you, I think it'd be better if it wasn't recessed so that you can nail to it. Good luck on your build 😀
Great work on a marvelous looking pedestal. I would strongly recommend NOT wearing flip flops in the shop and especially not around heavy wood products. I've seen too many painful outcomes.
Then this would be perfect for you. I custom made mine for a friend so the height was a little smaller and now I can't remember but the plan is for one 58 1/2' long x 31 1/2' deep x 18 1/4' tall. The full plans are in Family Handyman Winter 2018 page 68. Please send me a picture if you build it, I'd love to see it.
