Finally back to Guitar Building! I would love to see how the 3000 year old guitar is coming out. That is the one that got me to subscribe to your channel.
Nice job guys... If you haven't tried this, spray the wood with Super-Soft 2 Veneer Softener & Conditioner a few minutes before you bend. It will make those tight curves much easier (even on really tricky woods). I found it to be a real game changer.
Great stuff gents! I've got a bunch of sketches of a similar cutaway add-on for my bending form. I think there's a sweet way to get it hinged like you have, and then add a couple star knobs or clamps to draw it in and add tension. Good to see you back in the shop and making headway!!!
Years ago I built guitars with a partner who, after a summer of building jigs, found that tooling up was his joy. He started a company specializing in making one-off tooling and has made that his carreer.
Guys. If you make a handle to go on the top of the Jig that Matt was pushing down for the tight bend, it would be a lot easier for Matt to push the material down into the LMI Jig. I was watching him starting to struggle pushing it down. Just my thoughts.. Great Idea thou.
Yeah I was thinking the same. You could even elongate the body of the mold to attach a screw clamp from the body of the bending jig to the handle of "the matt portion jig" (couldn't think of another name)
Well done and thanks for the great content!! PID controllers are the bomb and help to eliminate the need for open flame in the shop and reduce the chance for fire!! Fire bad!!
Great video! I really have to get myself one of those LMI bending machines here in Australia but shipping costs are horrifying! That said hand bending highly figured Tasmanian Blackwood can be terrifying and redgum whilst stunning for binding snaps so easily. The stress reduction might pay for itself!
I always thought that plastic binding was cheesy. In particular I've seen old Gretch guitars with plastic binding that shrunk and cracked. If you are going to use a pickguard, a wooden pickguard is a nice touch to a guitar. I'm also not a fan of painted guitars, especially not the Gold Top LPs. GIMMIE the wood grain!
You said you wanted to automate the fwd bend a bit with a screw... what about having a lever with some weights on it and a series of holes in plug portion of molding plug to keep lever slightly above 90 degrees for consistent force or adjusting weights location on lever as it settles downward ?
The Boys are Back! Good to see y'all!! Quick question... would it be possible to use the binding in pieces? Glue up the larger then fit the smaller pieces afterwards? I'm thinking once glued and sanded, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference. And since it's wood, it won't have the same issues plastic will have over the years?
Hay my friends, I just love your videos. I’m have been doing repairs for sometime and and fell on bad heath. I would love to see about having someone do it, what would cost to have someone like you bend just my sides? I can do everything to build a guitar, arm bevel included.
would it be easier to bend the wood in one piece like an acoustic side, then cut it in strips? it would help support the wood and might result in less broken or misshaped pieces
That looks very much like a heater mat you’d use in a reptile tank/house.. 🤔 so why not use an actual guitar body - perhaps a prototype or whatever, and bend it spot-on (or maybe tighter with a slightly smaller template)?
For me the problem with binding - is one with some lines on bottom, like purfling on the sides. Its really hard to get it straight and not wavy... Especially for tight waist - like ukulele.
@@nopinionocomnt issue is that it get waves - because one is bending across wider part. sanding back bottom corner helps a little bit, but still there's no crispy line.
@@nopinionocomnt yea, glue sandwich, cut proper strips... issue is when you have totally prepared binding (like 2x7 mm crossection) with all lines on bottom and try to bind that strip - lines on bottom go wavy. I'm using Tidebond 2 - maybe it cannot hold, maybe there's something else...
Finally some content. Man, I’ve been jonesing…lol Great to see you guys back at it! As always, mad respect for Driftwood Guitars!!
Hi guys.
Handy trick. If you have trouble bending bindings, mix a little windex with your water. It relaxes the fibers and won’t stain the timber.

Good video. Glad to see y’all are back building guitars.

Super good idea!

This is way more relaxed- and it's better because of it.

Great video and excellent timing! I have decided to build my own bending machine and this close up view of the process was very helpful. Thanks!

That was fun. Just the right amount of jeopardy!!
Super cool device you guys are rocking !
EGGCELLENT Brothers! I have some ebony to bend up next, so this is great info!
Getting to make tools and jigs! Yes.
Love that Jig, I reckon you're getting that squared off bit in places because your inner form isn't solid.
Been hand bending some purple heart binding...it is so beautiful but almost not worth the struggle...almost 😆

I like your jig addition. Why didn't you put some sort of handle on it? Would be easier than two handing it.
Mm are good - mm are most accurate!
If you’re cutting your own binding check out the accu-slice. Jerry at Rosa String Works liked his. I believe it can work for backs and sides also.

Great design on that adapter. Distracting music not great.
Enjoyed the video, even though I don't build guitars.
Where is the 3000 year old guitar?? Did you finish it? Was it sold?
Good stuff!
Great video. Quick question - why did you not use the waist heating blanket? Perhaps your bender is older and did not come with one.
Mine has one but I’ve never seen a need for it
Can you use a side bender with plastic binding?
1.7 is impressie, ive been doing 1.5 jn maple by hand and it as about a 50 percent succes rate. Does not like sharp cutaways at all.

Woohoo!!
fun!
Any advice/discouragement in using padauk for binding?
Just that it can stain lighter woods.
Traditionally, that's 212 degrees.
Took me 15 minutes to realize he meant WAIST section not WASTE section.
I want to hang with you guys can we be frinds xoxo. But im in Nashville thanks for the free info
Man when you going to play 300 year old guitar
People build guitars but cant figure out how to make a paint handle

What up? We're two cool guys who are looking for other cool guys who want to hang out in our party mansion. Nothing sexual.
