I hate how people say that people only romance him if they want to "fix" him, when the reason I always befriend him in every run is because I relate to him as someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety. Also, it's not like he goes out of his way to be nasty to you. He just doesn't respond well to a random stranger walking up and talking to him out of the blue (which is also relatable tbh.) He also seems like one of the few marriage candidates who genuinely wants to live on a farm in a small town. And, like you said, blue chickens. Romantic or platonic, he's 10 heart material through and through.
I am currently trying to befriend Elliot for marriage because he is super sweet and interesting, but his gifts are so rare, that I'm making more progress with Shane (which I chose to befriend because he seemed interesting), I'm thinking of switching to Shane now hahaha I've only played for spring, summer and fall for a year and so far he is one of my besties. I was so happy when I received his letter with the Pepper poppers recipe... That feeling came genuinely :D

Sooo glad to see someone not hate on Shane. he is definitely my favourite Stardew character, I love his story-line because of how real it is. while I get people saying that they don't like the "fixer" narrative when it comes to romancing/friending him, that narrative is OPTIONAL. you can choose dialogue that doesn't play into the fixer narrative, for example in his 6 heart event "the decision is your own. just know I am here for you." as opposed to "but there's so much to live for!". Or in the second part of the 6 heart event, "I'm just happy you're still here." and "you needed a serious wake up call." (although this answer loses friendship points) as opposed to "I'm glad I was there to help." I find his battle with depression really relatable, and while I don't cope with my depression by getting drunk (I'm luckily medicated), I like how after his 6 heart event he - HIMSELF - makes the decision to get professional help, something I also struggled to do. His marriage room is messy, yes, and he still drinks occasionally, but you can't expect someone with a serious mental health caused addiction to quit cold turkey on the spot. He does try to be better and substitutes alcohol with sparkling water, along with working his issues out with a therapist (although there is little to no dialogue regarding this after his initial statement is made). and if you really don't want his room to reflect that he is still somewhat struggling, there are mods that change the way his room looks. It's very refreshing to see someone playing Stardew Valley addressing and liking the sweet mess of character Shane actually is. I'm very tired of hearing, seeing and watching people ragging on him, when I just want to ingest some good SV content. Edit: sorry about the tangent lol, I just love him so much :')

That being said, Shane has always been the bro for my character. I believe people with depression or addiction DO deserve love 100%, but Shane's storyline for me was "he needs to focus on himself and have a friend to be there for him", not a partner's feelings/needs to also have to manage on top of everything else. That, and if someone tells me to f- off, I f- off :D.

I actually have a mod that expands his dialogue and visible character development and also lets him curse, it's so fun to go up to him for the first time and he just goes, "Who the fuck are you? 1) I would never in my life dare throw rocks at sweet sweet Linus' tent. 2) I love being friends with Shane because of blue chickens and also seeing the mans thrive and treat himself right. Loving the Shane love, I love him too, he's definitely a comfort character for me, and my intention was never to "fix" him either! I actually have a mod that expands his dialogue and visible character development and also lets him curse, it's so fun to go up to him for the first time and he just goes, "Who the fuck are you? Leave me alone."

2) I love being friends with Shane because of blue chickens and also seeing the mans thrive and treat himself right. However I saw that if you marry him (which I don't as I am simply too loyal to Maru), his room shows beer cans and general alcoholic vibes which makes me sad because I want him to stay happy, so yes, the happy solution is to friend him, not husband him. Big brain move I found out a while ago: you can just ignore the villagers and save time by skipping to the egg hunt and talking to everyone. You finish the quest faster that way

a Shane lover bashing his haters? i'm subscribing!! all jokes aside shane and haley are my favorite candidates (literally about to marry them both thanks to a mod) and they both get so much unnecessary hate. i understand that they may not be appealing for everyone which is totally cool but i love how it's sort of like a little slow burn romance where they don't like you at first but slowly warm up as time goes on
