  • Here's a word from Gerald Manns who remixed/rebooted this..."Well, like everyone I was extremely disappointed when CTC was released in 1985. I knew the new songs from different bootlegs, like Bring The House Down, Five Alive etc. All the years after I was hoping for the existence of some mastertapes that were smuggled out of the studio in munich by a mindful technician. But literature that was released decades later showed that Paul and Pete didn't take part in the recordings.
    Last year I found two different audio editing softwares with different algorithms to separate vocals from an existing audio recording. The De-Berniator idea was born. So after ripping Joe's vocals from the tracks, cleaning them up (a lot of noisy bits, especially in The Dictator, had to be removed).
    Next step was to get a good live performance of every song, copying Pete's drums beat by beat into a drum machine that sampled original drum sounds.
    On songs The Clash didn't perform live I had to lay down the tracks in a Pete Howard stylee by myself. After that came listening, learning, rehearsing and recording guitars and basslines.
    To get a better sound I had to buy a Les Paul to differ from my Telecaster sound (nice axe to have anyway). I had to add some backing vocals because the algorithms swallowed some of the football chants (didn't make them out as vocals). It took me a while to mix it all, but now it was time to kick it out of my house.
    Especially in different Facebook groups are a lot of hate regarding the last line-up of The Clash. I think these were quite descent songs and a lot of fun to listen to now. For me, this is the CTC I expected and hoped for when it was released in 1985.
    Feel free to spread these recordings wherever you like, maybe it will shine a better light on the last line-up.
    Have fun!"
    GMAN

    Really, it’s incredible... the beauty of this track was hidden from all that Bernie’s overdubs!

    This is actually one of my favorite tracks on Cut the Crap due to the glorious group chorus that just soars!
    Plus the ideas inherent in the lyrics; the vision of the old West blended with the "space age" I always thought it was fine poetry.
    Now you have added a very Simonon-esque bass line which I really love.

    With this mix, it could easily have been on 'Sandinista'.

    What a labour of love. Thank you so much for all that hard work. And yes, it's already been said in many of the comments on these tracks but it's true: Joe must be smiling and giving thanks that it was finally done right!

    Fantastic work. Yep, let's get these tracks out there. The book 'We are The Clash' by Mark Anderson and Ralph Heibutzki (foreword by The Baker) re-ignited my interest and respect for the back to basics Clash Mk II line-up and the CTC reboot is now the icing on the cake. Any plans to do a similar job with the Out of Control demos which never made it to the album (Pouring Rain, Jericho, Glue Zombie, National Powder etc?). It'll be worth the work and the wait!

      Only if I can get the original vocal tracks. Isolating the vocals on the demos doesn‘t work because the quality is too bad. I tried it with jericho and glue zombie. Didn‘t work.

      @@mutantproof That's a real shame. Thanks for trying though. What we now have with the reboot is a total re-evaluation of the 84-85 Clash line-up and looking at the comments, a lot of people are really excited and thankful for hearing the songs as they were meant to be. Mohawk Revenge has become the new Cut The Crap! Thanks loads for all your time and effort.

      @@ianpattison1068 Thank you! It was great fun to do it. AND... Heston and me are working on a little bonus. Stay tuned!

    Bloody hell, what a joy to discover this ‘rebooted’ series. A fantastic job. Loads of us have always wondered what CTC would have sounded like sans Bernie Bernard Rhodes. And now - we have one version. Of all the ‘reboots’, this one is the most interesting to my ears, as the original was a complete Rhodes Mess. Love the bass and new found groove.
    At the risk of sounding like an idiot (just done) how the hell did you do this? Get hold of the master tapes? Whatever…..a great job mate.

    • @mutantproof
      @mutantproof 3 года назад

      Thank you! I isolated the vocals with the help of Steinberg‘s SpectraLayers. I‘d love to get my hands on the original tapes….

      @@mutantproof so…..that’s why you can’t do the same thing with songs like Jericho etc? You do include some band intro’s on this track that don’t come from CTC.
      Did you record all the backing tracks yourself?

    • @mutantproof
      @mutantproof 3 года назад +2

      @@stephenchapman249 yes, I did the complete backing tracks snd even some additional vocals (some parts were not recognized by the software as vocals). And that’s the problem with tracks like Jericho and Glue Zombie. The existing recordings have the vocals so buried in the mix that they‘re hard to isolate. But I‘m still working on them.
