We Tried to do "MAN vs UNIMOG" - But my Unimog died!

  • Hey Everyone!
So we set out to play around a bit, with our bigger 4x4's
And put the MAN 8.136 to the test, against the old Unimog 416
But just as we were about to wrap things up, the old unimog started coughing and died.
It's been having issues for a while now, and really, this had to happen one of these days.
    I think it's a fuel related issue.
But there is a whole list of other things, that needs to be sorted out on this old truck, as well.
So the plan is to give it a bigger overhaul, once the other 421 unimog is done. :)
    Thanks for watching!

Despite the engine issue, it seems like the Unimog has the advantage with lighter weight compared to the MAN. Also better approach and departure angles.

Are you sure thats not just a fuel delivery issue?? I know you keep the mog well maintained but to loose so much power in a short amount of time is intriguing. Maybe the next video could be a confirmation of its status???

      I'm pretty sure it's a fuel issue, yeah :)
but i haven't had the time to look into it yet.

What a same that the Unimog stopped, i hope it is only fuel related issue. I thought it was burning oil a lot more then before? Thnx for sharing and keep posting, as always love to see your videos 🤗👍

      @KJOff-Road  Год назад +2

I'm pretty sure it was a fuel issue, that caused it to stop. but the oil-burning is also getting worse.
So i guess it's all signs, that we need to start doing rebuild videos on this one :) (Once i get some room in the workshop)

The Mog is "1975" but the technology is far older. 👴
Coming from the U.S. I don't really know what/when the MAN was introduced.
Simple and solid has its place. A hammer from the stone age still works as a hammer today.

The Man has no portal axle like the Mog. This test is not mentioning that it is the reason the Man is getting its axle and even shaft hooked at the bottom on hills.

Hello; just love that 'mog of yours and I simply can't comprehend how the Danish Army could possibly see that MAN as a replacement; being both heavier, without front locker not to forget the lack of portal axles. A side-by-side comparison in much, much heavier terrain would definately better show the obvious shortcomings of the MAN.
Just curious as I observe it has a front PTO - where all Danish Army spec 'mogs euipped with PTO, also did they have any hydraulics? And for how long did the Army keep their 'mogs?

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! :)
There were several reasons they endend up replacing the 416 Unimog, with the MAN.
The main reason for getting rid of the Unimogs, were mostly due to safety consers.
The 416 Unimog, really was an old design, (in terms of safety) even by 80's standards.
combining that with inexperienced young recruits driving them, ended in a number of accidents.
I can't say they all had, but must did have a front PTO. It was used to power a mechanical winch, that most of them had, as well.
But they were not fitted with hydraulics. (A few might have had, if the were meant for a specific task)
Most of the 416 Unimogs were bought around 1975. and most of the were fased out, by 1990. But a few of thm were still in service for some special tasks, up untill the late 2010's
And the main reason they were replaced with the MAN 8. was due to the cost.
At the time, the Army was facing some big budget cuts. and the MAN was simply a much cheaper alternative to newer unimogs.
And on top of that, it could carry more weight,/People. so on paper, it might have looked very good. (Not to say that is a bad truck. it's just not a Unimog :)
But, later one, the army did start buying unimogs again. And they are still using several, newer types of unimog, today.

I have experience of driving both Unimog (1300L) and the MAN (8.150 FAE). The Unimog is a much better off road machine (and on road for that matter). But the MAN is still a very, very capable machine. The one I drove a lot had front and rear lockers and 14.50R20 tires. Air it down, fit it with chains, then when the going got realy tough, force the engine down to around 300 rpm, and it would simply log along. When you could buy 2-3 MAN's for the price of one Unimog, well, the Unimog was simply just not worth it. I understand the Army well.

Awesome! Please allow me the comment. I am kind of experienced in this and think you should know. How you look in your selfie shot is waaaaaay more professional, cool and beautiful than you might think. I see an amazing video. Perfectly structured and presented. But when I see you, I see that you have no idea how awesome you actually are. My advice. More explanations with you in in of some kind of working bench where you can put your hands on or hold/show things. As blend in when you - for example - remove an air filter and want to show the air filter in detail. Go to a work bench. Position the camera behind the work bench so the bench and you are both fully visible. Then forget the camera and explain me - and educated idiot who has no idea about anything you do - what you are doing. These clips will give you a - more confidence in you which you deserve because you have freaking talent and b) create a studio atmosphere.
But anyway. You do an amazing channel. Expect more comments from me. :-D

    • @KJOff-Road

      Thanks a lot!
I really appreciate all your positive comments!
And also, i get your idea. :) i don't currently have a work-bench setup that would work for shots like that. but still, i'll keep it in mind.
Also, i know what you mean about the confidence. it has taken a lot of me, to put my self on camera more. as i have never been used to "Expose" myself like that. but can can feel that my confidence with it, grows over time. so it's not a bad thing :)
But still, my main idea was to focus more on the vehicles and things i was doing, rather than myself. :)

Arb doesn't make lockers for these, also the man is the only one without a front locker. Some models of the MAN came with a front locker but they are hard to find, especially as an axle replacement and not as a full truck. (Most of the fire trucks had a front locker and the military trucks didn't.)
