Listening to this video takes me back to when I was growing up, and going camping with my family a ways from city life, in almost mid northern Michigan.
We’d have our pop up camper, late at night, the air would be getting cooler and crisp, with the critters running about either among the trees or along the forest floor, my sister and myself would be roasting marshmallows over the campfire and when we had about 3 s’mores each, we would be sent to bed while our parents sat by the fire - obviously to relax without the presence of kids 😂 - and laying down, hearing the fire, and the lake we’d be next to, was about 50 feet from our campsite.
Takes me back to the good old days 😕

The last time I was next to a campfire was in boy scouts back in 2003. I was up in northern Wisconsin and we would like campfires like every 2 days or so and just have a group session with hot chocolate and we would joke around and tell stories and even do a little fun skit. This was of course when phones weren't really a thing for a young boy to have so we did a lot of stupid things as young adolescents.

But even when you lived in Snow Lake, you could hear that even out your back door at night. Our house was a two minute walk to the beach/lake (one of many lakes in and up around there). The truth, we northerners are truly a hardier less cocky bunch of wilderness dwellers then our poser southern counter parts. We actually have more country then them but don't tell them that. We're better woodsmen, realer more humble people. Less intense, less insane. Won the damn war that we clearly were in God's right to do but never talk about it. Better shooters, archers, fishermen boaters and hunters. Of hardier stock too. Mostly Czech, Slovak, Irish, Polish, Norse Viking; you name it. People who fucking worked from being poor hated immigrants to become heroes who had at least their part in building this country. Less racist too. Oh, and I'm the first northerner to ever really say this because we're also a lot nicer.

I grew up going back and forth from California to Pennsylvania for my Dads military service. Everytime he came back from Vietnam we trekked cross country by way of the north camping in National forests and State parks we took a month usually to allow my Fad to acclimate back to civilian life. We stayed in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan and Newyork . Always fell asleep listening to the loons on the lakes or ponds. Thankyou for recreating those memories. I’ve had trouble sleeping from years of working nightshift. Now I relax and sleep listening to them and the rain you hit it right thanks

This made me cry. Thank you.
In my childhood I had the extraordinary honor to go to my grandma's summer cottage on the lake, and spend the summers there. We would leave the windows open since we did not have AC and the crickets and the loons would perform their orchestra for us. It was so alive and wonderful! I hardly felt like sleeping, and sometimes could not without it.
When I was very little the haunting beauty used to startle me awake and before I understood the source of the song I just felt it trying to reach me and it responded with so much feeling words still cannot do justice.
Now that I am grown up and my grandmother has long since passed, I have not been to the cottage in years and miss it terribly. My uncle's are selling it in the fall so I know I will not have another summer there again. Yet I remember the early autumn nights with the fireplace roaring the loons the only residents as the crickets had few in numbers remaining and the forests still with anticipation almost as if they were holding their breath and encouraging you to do the same until the song traveled through the boughs and across the water.
I finally got the heart to attempt to find such a video as this and it is such a blessing beyond words. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!

When you hear loons at night on a lake (when in pure silence) it’s initially a lot louder and echoes wayyyyy more than this. Almost feels eerie when it happens because of how much it echoes throughout the lake and surrounding forest (I have heard many loons on quiet lakes at the middle of night).

  • @MrArcadia2009

Loons are such beautiful diving ducks, prevalent in Northern Wisconsin waters. I've seen, and heard them, did some fishing with a few floating a few feet out. They didn't bother me, I didn't bother them. Was just glad to have the company. I'll be honest, the wail is the only call of theirs that I've heard before. But I'll be the first to tell you, with extremely little to no light pollution, up north, you see millions of more stars than you see on this screen. I was fishing on Island lake, near a beautiful little town named "Three Lakes" a chain of 28 freshwater lakes. (Please go visit if you get the chance. The sunsets are beautiful. And they make their own wine from cranberries, it's delicious!) With no light pollution, at night, with bats flying acrobatically under piers, I saw a large section of nebula that was part of our galaxy, and I was amazed. Only once, have I been able to see that. And it's a memory that's been on my mind a lot lately.
