That's why I think makes this show Excel so much, it explores what love really is. Love is not comfort, it can be humorous uneasy strange and everything ridiculous. And none of it makes any sense except to our hearts
Ed's whole storyline in this episode emotionally destroyed me. I could feel each attack at his past from "Ben" shoot through me, and the realisation that he was actually Ed's self-hatred only worsened it. The whole theme of feeling unlovable despite being loved was just way too real for me because I've often felt this way, even if I haven't had the same past experiences. Also, huge props to David Jenkins for the addition of a mer-Stede. Beautiful mix of symbolism and fanservice.
Can we all take a moment to recognize that this scene is one of the best metaphors I've ever seen put onto screen. One of the struggles being faced by this character is his oh-so painful split between two identities; the one people have constructed for him, and the one he feels he can never deserve. Firstly there's Blackbeard; a fiction, a terror, and a figment of people's imaginations come to life to crush him under the weight. He was constructed by other people with little choice of what that would mean for him. And then there's Ed; a person, a human, who he thought he'd get to be until the one person who made him feel real vanished away, leaving him ripped apart and unsure of who he was. When he became Ed in season 1, there was still so much uncertainty, because the Ed that was there was still, somewhat, like Blackbeard. He was a person. He was a human. But he was also created off of the expectations and love from Stede. Is that a bad thing? No. Not necessarily. But it does mean that it would be more difficult for him to truly become his own person. Made it easier for him to be torn apart and become what he did during the start of Season 2. Made it easier to feel as if he'd disappointed and let down everyone, because he didn't know how to be either person, so it would just be easier if he was nothing at all. And then we get this scene. This brilliant, incredible, amazing scene that says so much in so little time. Ed was never going to be able to shake Blackbeard. It's too heavy to push away, and too sharp to unhook from his skin. He said it in the first season. The only way Blackbeard was ever going away, was if he died. And that's what's happened. Blackbeard died. Which means that for the first time ever, Ed (new, reborn, and stumbling into his own) has a chance to live.
Beautifully said! This whole show walks a very fine line between being absurdly funny/silly and heartbreakingly tender. I feel like that is essentially Taika's wheelhouse, which is why I think he is so perfect for Blackbeard/Ed. I love that there are so many other folks out there that are as smitten with this show as I am.
@@xThemFatalexand like. I am also a big soft middle aged dude and seeing everyone lose their minds over mer-Stede is making me feel like “maybe people won’t laugh at me for being a big soft guy with a mermaid tail”
I’m going to sound like a crazy person but hear me out…. A lot of people have been calling Stede a “goldfish merman” which I think is interesting because goldfish are freshwater fish. Stede is literally a fish out of water. He comes from a different world (freshwater) and is somehow able to survive in the pirate world (saltwater). This almost mythical existence defies all logic. To Ed he is this magical creature who was somehow able to pull him out of the darkness.
I cannot stop watching this scene. This show depicts the emotions of love with such care and delicacy and it is spot-on to how it actually feels internally to fall in love and to experience heartbreak and hopefully to then reunite with that person. I can’t stop crying. Also Kate Bush was perfect for this scene.
Same. Can’t stop watching/crying, thinking of my time with the love of my life and those hardcore feelings that go with it all. This scene brings those feelings on like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. The music, of course, crushingly beautiful, and as precisely accurate as the rest.. .absolute immaculate brilliance at work here. Thank you all who contributed to this masterpiece. You made something amazing and important.
Not me crying AGAIN when watching this scene…anybody else quite astounded at how well Rhys adapted to being a mermaid? Maybe in another life he really did 😊
Rhys has spoke about how the swimming bit wasn't too bad because when he was a kid he would swim with his legs together and pretend he was a mermaid (he's really into Cryptids and even hosts a podcast about them). He had to work on holding his breath to be able to do these underwater scenes. He was also super nervous because he'd previously got filmed water scenes in a tank years ago and he nearly drowned! 😯 If you seek out the BTS stuff that Samba shared you see Taika being really gentle and reassuring to Rhys 🥺
This scene was beyond magical. It made me feel levels of wonder I only remember experiencing last as a kid walking out of the cinema after some magical fantasy adventure movies. Something about the combination of feelings, visuals, music and the general imagery just blasted my neurons into space. I went from almost crying to giggling to almost crying again - this scene being the last out of 3 episodes felt so special too. It was a wonderful rollercoaster of emotions. I'm so thankful for this show, its so full of love and watching it was so wonderful and mafical.
Me n my partner decided to watch the new episodes as a date night, and when I tell you how emotional we were both getting during this scene, the music swelling up, watching stedes face as he tries desperately to wake ed up and then to have MERMAID FUCKING STEDE appear out of nowhere. We started to cackle so HARD. It was perfect.
As a MASSIVE Kate Bush fan (thank you stranger things) this scene nearly had me weeping into my friends shoulder. I’m so happy Kate’s music is in the public eye again and seemingly she’s lending it out more! I know Taika has been a Kate Bush fan for many years so I’m delighted for him that he got this song in the show.
Taika's wheelhouse is definitely that of tears and laughter. And compassion. Those are the purest emotions of humanity. And this scene resonates a lot with me, personally. I almost died just over a year ago, and if it weren't for my partner holding my hand whilst he slept in a recliner next to my hospital bed for a week... I'm not sure I would've had the fight left in me to survive.
