It's like everything he slowed down or stopped doing that was keeping it all at bay was what killed him. He was going to stop anyway. I heard him say he was just going to start doing albums but not touring. He may have ben joking because the road is what kept him alive.
I don't know what Lem thought but I'd guess he understood his time was short, maybe its for the best he went at that age where he still had his wits about him. Old age and things like dementia and alzheimers can really distort and "disrespect' so to speak a person who people love. So maybe that was the perfect age for him to go.
Looking at this interview now, I just noticed Lemmy has a big black spot on his hand, that's a huge cancerous one too, and another on his ring ringer, really sad
