Nice job brother!!! I just wanted to tell you which I’m sure you already know, you do an amazing job on all your videos , your entertaining, well spoken and you seem like a real cool guy & I respect that you know your shit. I’ve been watching your videos for about a year & a half now . I’m 48 yrs old ive been collecting since I was eleven and watching you go down the rabbit hole of collecting is like watching my life on video . You are seriously into the same exact shit I like!!! I always look forward to your videos, keep up the good work & thanks
This has literally been one of the nicest comments I’ve ever. Thank you so much for your support. I put my heart and soul in this channel and the fact that people like you really get off on the kind of stuff I put out pushes me forward. You’re a great dude, feel free to connect with me on social media! Thank you!
Fantastic ranking Dylan! An almost impossible task. I don't know how you were able to keep this at 30 minutes. You spent the perfect amount of time talking about each album. Well done! Number one for me will always be Red with Court and Larks right behind. I can only click the thumbs up button once but trust me I'm holding up both thumbs!
Thank you Bill! Now ranking Rush is going to be an impossible task 😳 I try to keep the babbling concise when it comes to these things. It’s easy for me to go off on tangents! Thanks so much for your comment, happy to see you tune in!
I understand when I go through all these top ten video’s I’m literally just looking for someone to agree with me when I’m alone. Especially about something like prog rock that nobody I know likes. Appreciate your words, I gained much more than self gratification!
That thumbnail is awesome Dylan! As a King Crimson newbie, this is a great video! It gives me a good place to start! I really enjoyed all your commentary and knowledge of the band! I have really enjoyed "In The Court Of The Crimson King"! I look forward to giving some more of these albums a listen!
In 1969 a boy in my art class brought a record to school with the wildest cover ever seen!! In the court was the greatest enlightenment of music to a 14 year old kid!! 1. Lizard 2. Red 3. In the court 4. In the wake 5. Larks tongue 6. Starless 7-13? Any of the rest LPs are tied for 7th place.. because I listen to the first 6 LPs all the time compared to the rest of the LPs!! Great analysis and great work!! Thank you for your hard work
Jack Ker-o-ac! Read On The Road, it's aq good book. Been a Crimson fan since WABX in Detroit played the whole 1st album in the middle of the night and blew me away.
Excellent video and analysis. For the longest time I only had “In the Court…” but recently started digging into the rest of their catalog, which is amazing. Very glad I did. Now they’re one of my top 10 favorite prog bands.
ConstruKction/Reconstrukction came out shortly after my 16th birthday and was the first thing I bought after I got my driver's license and could jump in the car and chase down any old thing I felt like. So it's always had a special place in my heart. I can see the argument about it being less melodic than some of their other material, but the density you mentioned gives it its own place in their world.
Nice review, man. There is no bad King Crimson album, so any order is just fine. Sure there are standout albums, but overall, there are all pretty amazing.
1. Court 2. Red 3. Thrak 4. Power To Believe 5. Discipline 6. Beat 7. Larks 8. Bible Black 9. Islands 10. Lizard If you’ll remember, I didn’t know shit about KC about 6 months ago. I actually got advice from you on which albums to buy. Killer video. You rock, Dylan. You are definitely in my top 3 VC personalities. Ive been watching your videos for around 2 years now.
I remember! That’s a respectable ranking, cool to see Thrak and Power high up. Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, you are a great guy and your support is appreciated immensely.
Oh man! A ton of great info! I love “in the court..” but haven’t actually listened to any of their other albums. This video will be a great guide to explore their discography! Take care, Dylan!
Zzupp Dylan ! Fantastic video ! Fantastic band ! Although I really have’nt heard all albums 100% , I trust your placement , and back-up this list. Most definately the first three spots = the podium. I wish I could push ”like” more than once. Now , I’m gonna play ”In the court” for my neighbours. Stay safe. CHEERS !!!

Interesting that you put Three of a Perfect Pair so low on the list! It’s one of my favorites haha. Possibly my favorite of the three 80s albums, but Discipline is objectively the best
I have an original 1969 Canadian pressing of ,In The Court of The Crimson King which I had acquired age 10 in 1974. one of my most cherished LP's in my 600 plus record collection.
Excellent job - great respect - I just subscribed. I seem to like 'Three of a Perfect Pair' more than most; and, while I was initially disappointed with 'Wake of Poseidon,' it has grown on me.
I knew who King Crimson were and didn’t understand why “In the Court” was so special until I listened to it for the first time. Immediately I see why that album was so groundbreaking and now I’m going listen to the rest of their early work!
Superb video, thank you. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Steven Wilson remixes versus the originals for all the albums he worked on. I understand why it worked for Lizard but am unsure of the others (I know opions are split over LTIA, for instance). That gag about Shakesperian Kiss had me laught out loud :)
Nice run down of all the albums. Number 1 for me is Red but i often say its not only Crimsons best but probably my all time fave album by anyone. Red, Larks, Starless, Court, Islands are my top 5
MY Ranking: 13. The Construkction of Light 12. The Power to Believe 11. Thrak 10. Three of a Perfect Pair 9. Beat 8. Lizard 7. In the Wake of Poseiden 6. Islands 5. Discipline 4. Starless & Bible Black 3. Larks Tongues in Aspic 2.. Red 1.. In the Court of the Crimson King
12:00 Glad to see it's this low. I like the album, but I find it derivative and somewhat lacklustre, but I'm only familiar with the band's first two releases, so hopefully this indicates that I'll like their later albums more.
1. In The Court Of The Crimson King 2. In The Wake of Poseidon 3. Lizard 4. Red 5. Starless and Bible Black 6. Islands 7. Larks' Tongues in Aspic 8. Thrack 9. Beat 10. Power To Believe
Thanx, as a big KC fan, nice to hear this review. Very well done! And yep the main flow of your ranking follows mine, with some changes in position. Although I agree that Court of course is the most influential and groundbreaking, its not my personal nr1. But ranking KC albums is almost impossible. Thinking about the bottom of the list, How can albums that contain such amazing tracks as construKction of Light or Neurotica be so low. Well I think because KC is such a great great band... 1) Larks 2) Red 3) Lizard 4) Court of 5) Discipline 6) Starless and BB 7) Poseidon 8) Power to believe 9) Islands 10) Thrak 11) Three of a perfect pair 12) Beat 13) ConstruKction
@Kruegerisgod He's not open minded to other genres of music? I did here him say in one live stream that he likes Prince. Somebody asked him if he liked Michael Jackson or Prince. He said, "Prince all the way." He's one of those people who thinks Michael Jackson is a pedophile which is entirely not true. I don't know what else he likes or dislikes cause I've forgotten about it. I'm easily amused when he says shiny shiny.
I've been collecting King Crimson for 50 years, my taste is more towards RIO and Avant-garde so that dictates my list of favourites. Which obviously, like most lists, says more about me than Crimson. I've got all the box sets plus live albums by current line ups but this is my list of the albums. 1. Lizard 2. Larks Tongues in Aspic 3. Starless and Bible Black 4. Islands 5. Red 6. In the Wake of Poseidon 7. In the Court of the Crimson King 9. The Power to Believe 10. Thrak 11. Discipline 12. Three of a Perfect Pair 13. Beat 14. The Construction of Light Although, the last two studio albums are lower on this list, I love the Projects work and probably play music from the Heaven and Earth box the most.
I think I broadly agree with this listing, probably swap round Lark’s Tongues and In The Wake of, I think 7 is right for In The Court, love the songs, but can’t get along with the recording🙂
I like hearing opinions on the discography of one of my favorite bands of all time, so thanks for the video. I don't agree with most of it though. I've come around to Islands and have rated it much higher than I used to, but I just don't get the adoration for Lizard. An awesome, cathartic opening and some brilliant intensity in the Battle of Glass Tears, but the rest of the album is like drunk jazz and just doesn't work at all for me. And I would say that Thrak is a stronger album than the watered down Poseidon.
17:35 Interesting. I've never heard a song replicate the circus feel outside of The Beatles' Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! which for me encapsulates it perfectly.
After the first album, In The Court of the Crimson King, that had the following members, Robert Fripp, Greg Lake, Michael Giles, Ian McDonald and Peter Sinfield all of the following albums are not King Crimson, they are Robert Fripp albums.
Interesting countdown . I can’t really argue about your order . Court of the Crimson King was very unique for the time . Not #1 for me but … big fan of Larks Tongue and Red . Super heavy . As far as later albums Discipline is right up there
well done! I agree with nearly everything ( except the Belew period Discipline being so high)... little thing, I know, but Jack Kerouac (ke ro ac), Allen Ginsberg (/g/ not /dZ/), Gustav Holst's Mars and Larks Tongues in Aspic ( not aspect) - sorry to be picky but we're talking Robert Fripp haha!
My personal top is; 1.- Larks' Tongues in Aspic 2.- In the Court of the Crimson King 3.- Red 4.- In the Wake of Poseidon 5.- Lizard 6.- Islands 7.- Starless and Bible Black 8.- Discipline 9.- THARK 10.- The Power to Believe 11.- The ConstruKction of Light 12.- Beat 13.- Three of a Perfect Pair
Mine, including some of the live albums would prolly be: 17. The ConstrucKtion - 6.8/10 16. Beat - 7.7/10 15. Lizard - 7.9/10 14. Earthworks - 8/10 13. In the Wake - 8.2/10 12. The Power to Belew - 8.4/10 11. Three of a Perfect Pair - 8.4/10 10. Thrak - 8.4/10 9. VROOM VROOM - 8.8/10 8. Islands - 9/10 7. USA - 9.5/10 6. Starless and Bible Black 9.5/10 5. Absent Lovers - 10/10 4. Discipline - 10/10 3. In the Court - 10/10 2. Red - 10/10 1. Larks - 10/10
My king crimson ranking AMAZING :O 10/10 + 1.larks tongues in aspic 2.starless and bible black ESSENTIAL 10/10 3.islands 4.in the wake of poseidon 5.Red EXCELLENT 9/10 6.in the court of the crimson king 7.discipline GREAT 8/10 8.lizard 9.beat GOOD 7/10 10.the power to believe 11.the construKction of light OK 6/10 12.THRAK BAD 4/10 13. three of a perfect pair
The best era for King Crimson is with Wetton and Bruford and Fripp , i don't understand why Trakk and the Power to Beleive are not considered as top 6 !!!!
He isnt ranking it based on his personal favourites, hes ranking it based on what he thinks is objectively better. So Starless And Bible Black is his personal favourite, but In The Court is objectively better
If I had to rank them it would be this 1. Lizard (1970) 2. Islands (1971) 3. Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (1973) 4. Red (1974) 5. In the Court of the Crimson King (1969) 6. Starless & Bible Black (1974) 7. In the Wake of Poseidon (1970) 8. Discipline (1981) 9. Three of A Perfect Pair (1984) 10. The ConstruKction of Light (2000) 11. The Power to Believe (2003) 12. THRAK (1995) 13. Beat (1982)
Great enthusiast piece! It's a shame Gordon Haskell was such a berk about Peter Sinfield's lyrics on Lizard. He could have made an effort to understand how clever they were. Robert Fripp similarly dissed PS's lyrics on Islands. He seemed to be happy with very much inferior lyrics elsewhere.
I hate the SW remix of Lizard, at least the one in the box. Its clearly the black sheep of those remixes because Fripp "helped" Wilson with it and made edits to the music which completely change the feel. So I dont think its so much that he likes it now for the new mix, more because he went in and changed a bunch of stuff which makes it more of a re envision. There is a version of that Wilson worked alone on but its only been released on CD and many prefer it.
KC is my 2nd favorite band of all time, but I don't get all this 'they don't have a bad album' thing. Of course they bad albums every band does, even my favorite band ever, Black Sabbath, has bad albums. For me I don't like In the Wake, Thrak or Lizard. You people do know it's okay to not like some albums from a band even if you love them, right?
13. The Power To Believe 12. Construction Of Light 11. In The Wake Of Poseidon (still good) 10. Discipline (sorry guys) 9. Beat (yep that's right) 8. Thrak 7. Islands (Still damn good imo) 6. Three Of A Perfect Pair (used to be last) 5. Starless And Bible Black 4. Red 3. Lizard 2. Larks Tongues In Aspic 1. In The Court of the Crimson King List always changes
I absolutely hate vinyl. All of these records sound better as 5.1 and Dolby Atmos Steven Wilson remixes. Vinyl is too high maintenance, too much pops and clicks. The first time you play a vinyl record you begin slowly destroying it. I haven't had a turntable in decades. I don't see what you knuckleheads find so charming with it. It should have stayed dead like it was for so long.

Very well thought out and a respectable ranking of an incredible band. Nice job man 👍

So glad that you got something out of this Jacob, thanks for tuning in!
Just got into Crimson this last August. Already ordered a 1969 promo of Court. It’s that good. Great review!
Another excellent video, well done. Maybe you could do one about bands / artists who peaked with their debut album?
There’s a thought! I’m gonna work on that!
Stay safe. CHEERS !!!
Hey Roger! Thanks so much for tuning in! I hope your neighbors enjoy the music 😂
King Crimson is the North Korea of rock bands. Not only due to the ultra strict vibes it gives to its audience (forbidding all photography and recording) and band members (Extremely demanding to every musician), but because it is a relatively small and little-known band compared to all the iconic rock giants, that punches FAR ABOVE AND BEYOND its weight.
Enjoyed the video, been I huge KC for a long time but just been holding for awhile getting the vinyl until I just saw more of the box sets available at DGM. I was fortunate enough to be at the very last tool concert then break my pandemic mold by flying all the way from the other side of Oregon to see KC live at NYC. I got VIP and talked to fripp for a bit. Took a gamble too by waiting at the buses and had the photo opportunity with them. Definitely the night I won’t forget
Starless and bible black is also my favorite crimson album! Then Lizard, larks, red, in the wake, debut, islands, earthbound, USA, then the rest
Excellent job - great respect - I just subscribed.
I seem to like 'Three of a Perfect Pair' more than most; and, while I was initially disappointed with 'Wake of Poseidon,' it has grown on me.

the best crimson ranking. no bullshit talk. quick and exact. viral, vivid. Then.holding the vinyls, something special something more over all above.

Me too!
The Rock and Roll Hall of Sham is just that to include the clown show known as Kiss but to exclude King Crimson.
Islands is my Favorite KC album Ladies Of The Road very Beatlesque But my favorite song(s) Formentara Lady/Sailors Tale AWESOME 👍
Always loved islands too, so underrated. I love the jazz influence and I think the title track is probably the most beautiful song they ever did.
Nice run down of all the albums. Number 1 for me is Red but i often say its not only Crimsons best but probably my all time fave album by anyone. Red, Larks, Starless, Court, Islands are my top 5
Ker-oh-ack.
I have to agree with your assessment of Fripp and friends.
Keep on keeping on!
Never a Bad album by King Crimson the Prog masters !!! 👍🎶🎼✌

Saw King Crimson with Jamie Muir unbelievable... then later with Discipline again so good especially with The Lounge Lizards as support....
I saw Discipline in Manchester with The Lounge Lizards as support, brilliant gig🙂
I feel heard. My favorites is Islands with their debut in a close second
I've never heard of King Crimson until I started watching Darren lock's channel. He does these Prog Rock review videos and stuff.
@Kruegerisgod Lol! What makes him a douche?
@Kruegerisgod Well, I know that he's a snob for music.
@Kruegerisgod He's not open minded to other genres of music? I did here him say in one live stream that he likes Prince. Somebody asked him if he liked Michael Jackson or Prince. Great video. Lizard #1 for me
Very good contender for the #1 spot. It’s so out there and resembles a lot of essential qualities that make up the Crimson ideology.
I like red and larks the most
I agree - both are superb. I HATE everything with Belew. As soon as he joined, Crimson died for me.
I like hearing opinions on the discography of one of my favorite bands of all time, so thanks for the video. I don't agree with most of it though. It occurred to me that Three of a Perfect Pair is structured like one of David Bowie's "Berlin" albums
I have an early lp of Lizard and it sounds terrific. Steven Wilson is outstanding in his mix as well though.
After the first album, In The Court of the Crimson King, that had the following members, Robert Fripp, Greg Lake, Michael Giles, Ian McDonald and Peter Sinfield all of the following albums are not King Crimson, they are Robert Fripp albums.
Which makes me love them no less. ❤
Nice video. But I'm curious - if you mention that "this album is my favorite" then why is it not at #1 on the list?
At least in my opinion, favorites don’t always equal out to be their best. As much as I love S&BB, that doesn’t take away the impact of ITC
Trust your instincts. SABB might be the best album.

The best era for King Crimson is with Wetton and Bruford and Fripp , i don't understand why Trakk and the Power to Beleive are not considered as top 6 !!!!

Not sure how u say an album is your favorite one but it's rank 4?
He isnt ranking it based on his personal favourites, hes ranking it based on what he thinks is objectively better. So Starless And Bible Black is his personal favourite, but In The Court is objectively better
@@eggsandbutter2051 but it's all subjective
@@MrHobo71i agree. Your favorite is supposed to be YOUR #1
If I had to rank them it would be this
1. Lizard (1970)
2. Islands (1971)
3. Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (1973)
4. Red (1974)
5. In the Court of the Crimson King (1969)
6. Starless & Bible Black (1974)
7. In the Wake of Poseidon (1970)
8. Discipline (1981)
9. Three of A Perfect Pair (1984)
10. The ConstruKction of Light (2000)
11. The Power to Believe (2003)
12. THRAK (1995)
Every time someone puts Lizard above In The Wake of Poseidon, I throw up a little in my mouth.
Someone may think Construkction of Light is a solid album. We all have our opinions 🙂
Here! I do, I do! lol
You know that Happy Family is about the Beatles.
We have the same top three. Just in a different order.. I don't really listen to any KC albums past Red, honestly. I just can't get into that sound.
Interesting take on a very subjective topic.
I can't listen to Ladies of the Road!😂
KC is my 2nd favorite band of all time, but I don't get all this 'they don't have a bad album' thing. Of course they bad albums every band does, even my favorite band ever, Black Sabbath, has bad albums. For me I don't like In the Wake, Thrak or Lizard. You people do know it's okay to not like some albums from a band even if you love them, right?
the more I see ranking albums video, the more I feel it's stupid
You absolutely BUTCHERED the pronunciation of Jack Kerouac! Never heard of KAH ROKE !
13. The Power To Believe
12. Construction Of Light
11. In The Wake Of Poseidon (still good)
10. Discipline (sorry guys)
9. Beat (yep that's right)
8. Thrak
7. Islands (Still damn good imo)
6. Three Of A Perfect Pair (used to be last)
5. Starless And Bible Black
4. Red
3. Lizard
2. Larks Tongues In Aspic
1. In The Court of the Crimson King
List always changes
I absolutely hate vinyl.
All of these records sound better as 5.1 and Dolby Atmos Steven Wilson remixes.
Vinyl is too high maintenance, too much pops and clicks.
The first time you play a vinyl record you begin slowly destroying it.
I haven't had a turntable in decades.
I don't see what you knuckleheads find so charming with it.
It should have stayed dead like it was for so long.
