Essentially, "the loneliest day of your life" is the day after you lose a loved one. You just feel a hole in you and feel so alone. You start thinking you can't go on and that you should have died, etc. and the whole world is burning down around you, but nobody else notices because it's a personal trauma and pain you are working through. So while everything is on fire, nobody cares, but you. Also, System of a Down is another band that sets itself apart from other metal bands because they're very unique. There's an art to even their hardest and heaviest songs.
That's what I've always thought as well. How in order to function, you have to go through the motions of everyday life - even though there' s a whole world of pain and loss under the surface.
"Hypnotize" is the logical next SOAD song to take a look at. Daron and Serj share the vocal load pretty evenly and the way they alternate singing their individual parts feels almost like they're having a conversation.
I would direct attention towards Radio/Video as another fantastic choice of song to look at for pretty much the exact same reasons you gave for Hypnotize.
From what everyone has said Serj had to practically be begged to make Hypnotize and Memorize. I get the feeling he really kinda more so enjoys being able to do what he wants, when he wants, how he wants.
I don't know why Radio/video isn't suggested more, must not be a popular song but it's a perfect example of their background coming through their music. The vocals are great and there would be a lot to discuss.
i discovered SOAD as a kid and just thought they were cool, but the older I get the more I appreciate the absolute stellar musicianship of this band, As a kid, you do not think about stuff like harmonizing vocal lines or guitar lines and that sort of thing, now, when you are older and know better how music works, you finally begin to appreciate what they are able to pull off. not a lot of bands can do that. SOAD are or rather were really something special.
Same here. That also goes for Deftones, Porcupine Tree and a few more. It's interesting how some bands back then created their own identity, which is ofc common in many bands, but to the point of making up a new unheard sonority and composition structure is quite something to be proud of. I feel we've reached an era where there are still many interesting bands mixing genres and styles, but not really coming up with something radically unique within the rock genre - and I'm not a mainstream man myself.
Lost in Hollywood would be amazing. It has Daron on Lead vocals and there are such amazing hormonies between him and Serj. It's an absolutely amazing song.
They both have great voices, but I think when they harmonize together, its an instance of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. They're just so good together!
@@DisregardedHappiness Ok, I'll take it further. Daron has a very mediocre singing voice. Arguably below average even among amateur talent. He probably wouldn't even win a karaoke contest against drunks.
A close friend of mine passed away my senior year of high school, just before my friends and I were all going to graduate. We visited him on life support in the hospital. After getting the news that he wasn't going to wake up, we all scream-sang this song in an overstuffed SUV on the drive home. He loved SOAD. RIP Spencer. We miss you every day.
Lonely Day is one of those songs I come back to repeatedly when I know I'm sad, but need the comfort of empathy. Darons performance, accompanied with the guitar, really cut through in such a beautiful harmony that it gets me to tear up and genuinely feel out my emotions. Of course Serj's backing enhances everything, but I really praise Daron for such a raw feeling performance here.
"Radio/Video" is a singing masterpiece and for me the best singing metal song of all time, Serj and Daron really show the extent of therr talent and range in it.
This song has helped me through a lot. I lost my wife in 2019. I cried so hard at her funeral I thought I would die too. Recently my father passed away. He has always been there for me. This song helps with my grief. The message at the end, "it's a day I'm glad I survived" means there's always hope.
The siren at the end is met to transition into Soldier Side (the last song on the Hypnotize Album). Listening to "Lonely Day" and "Soldier Side" together builds the story. I honestly think the songs from the Hypnotize Album are the biggest in story telling for SOAD. It is like Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall or TOOLs Laterlaus, the album should be played from Beginning to end without break. Every song strings into each other to build a larger picture. Plus "Holy Mountains" is a great song talking about the Armenia heritage but mainly the Armenia genocide
You can really hear who contributed what to soad when you listen to scars on broadway (daron's band) and serj's solo work. You can sort of mix their two sounds in your head and you get system of a down. Its pretty neat
I would love to see you check out Soldier Side. It is the best example of their harmonies, as the entire song is sung by them in harmony. It is stunning, and an absolute emotional gut-punch.
For those who aren't familiar with the full layout of their last two albums, Mesmerize & Hypnotize, that last sound in the song of the guitar fading out is a callback to the beginning of Mesmerize, with a little song called Soldier Side (Intro), the opening track. Here on Hypnotize, Lonely Day is the next to last song, and the callback reminds listeners of that little opening track from the other album, prior to the final track here, which is a reprise (Full Version) of Soldier Side. It's a really beautiful symmetry to tie both albums together. Although they were released six months apart, they are considered a Double Album. The band even issued double album packaging when Mesmerize was released, with an incomplete case with snap-on apparatus, so that when Hypnotize came out later, the two cases could be snapped together.
I'm from Brazil. We probably got it a little bit dellayed because they were both release at the same time here (as I can remember, I might be wrong. I was just a teenager back then). That's why I know every song from Mesmerize but none from Hypnotize. I didn't have the money to buy both, so I picked one. As a grown man that had every album but Hypnotize, I should go to any stream platform and listen to it but I never did it.
Bro thank you so much for the info, that's so cool! I got into SOAD a little later in life, so I didn't get to experience all the little things like this. I love this little insight, it makes the albums and their discography stand out that much more
"Lost in Hollywood" is another Daron song with amazing Serj background vocals. Also, Daron does have another project that he fronts....Scars on Broadway. I saw them open for Deftones and was blown away by Daron and his songs
Soldier side is absolutely beautiful and so incredibly powerful . You get a lot of both serj and Daron and the emotion here is heart wrenching. ATWA is another powerful one for serj and its probably my favorite and has been for years. ❤️❤️
Definitely give "Soldier Side" from the Hypnotized album a go. Serj & Daron's harmonies make it breathtakingly haunting yet beautiful. The subject matter of the lyrics are tragically poignant to this day.
Agreed. I also find it fitting that the last song they released together on an LP is, in my opinion, the most gut wrenching and heartbreaking song they released while they were together.
it, to me, was the most heartbreaking and beautiful piece of art I have ever heard. it's the only song that makes me cry every time I listen. every lyric is like a gut punch.
Hard to believe once you hear a band like this once, you don't dive into their entire catalog off the jump. If you truly save your first-time reactions for the us fans of your channel that's a serious sacrifice on your part and thank you for that.
If you want more Daron vocals he has his own band now called Scars on Broadway! I love all their work so far and their song and music video for “Lives” is a great listen and watch, especially the more Armenian folk inspired sounds.
Fun fact: That siren-like sound at 16:07 is actually a running theme throughout Mesmerize/Hypnotize, since its a double album. In Mezmerize, that siren is heard right after Soldier Side (intro) ends, which seamlessly transistions into BYOB! In Hypnotize, Lonely Day ends with that, which also transistions into one of my personal favorites Soldier Side. This effectively bookends the album and its one of their most powerful songs thanks to Serj and Daron's haunting harmonies and lyrics. Thank you for covering this as always! Hope you'll check out Soldier Side someday, cheers.
For more Daron, he has his own band called Scars on Broadway. I reckon they're incredible and also a lot of songs that Daron wrote for System that they didn't use, he used for Scars on Broadway. Definatly worth a listen.
I liked Scars on Broadway and Serj's solo stuff, both. But, I always felt that their stuff alone always seemed lonely. Maybe it's just me making crap up in my head, but their solo stuff always seemed to be missing the other.
SOAD (Darren and John) actually played some of those Scars songs live. Pretty cool to watch some older concerts and then Darren and John just randomly play a song for a couple minutes that ends up being on thr Scars album
I surely wish SOAD were still a fully active band. They resonate with me to my core in so many ways. I hope whoever may be having health issues in the band gains a wonderful recovery. They are truly in a genre all their own.
If I'm not mistaken, when they sing "I want to die with you", they switch positions. Serj starts off low and goes high, while Daron does the opposite. It makes that line stand out to me.
This song is about the loss of a loved one. I saw SOAD 5 times in my life (earliest one in 1998, latest in 2017). My mother passed away in 2010, and during the latest SOAD concert I attended, they played this song. I was taken by surprise when they played it, and I didn't manage to hold back my tears. Witnessing them performing this song was so moving. It was really cathartic, even if my mother's passing happened 7 years before that moment, it all came back to me, but among the pain, sweet memories of her also popped in my head while listening to this song. The atmosphere of this song is on point, it really transcribes well what you feel at that moment in your life in my opinion. Thank you for reacting to it, and thank you to SOAD for helping people in those kind of moments with such beautiful songs.
Another Forest fan here. I've actually first listened to the band by taking a 25hits type compilation CD from my school friend. It didn't have Forest on it, so when I've finally purchased their first three albums, my first thought on hearing it was "this is their most SOAD song". I don't know why, but for me it was just the quintessence of their pre Mesmerize/Hypnotize sound.
I realize this is more of a vocal reaction channel but, as a studio/session musician for 30+ years, I've got to say this is my favorite of Daron's solo compositions. Layering multiple guitars that are slightly off-tempo creates such a feel of dissonance that it perfectly ties into the overall feel and theme of the song. I don't think most guitar players would have thought to do it that way. Such an underrated song.
A world burning and everyone avoiding looking at it, beautiful metaphor for the experience of grief. A loneliness not only from having lost someone, but also of being disconnected from the people around you. And because you treat us so well by listening to the songs we suggest, I'll never stop suggesting Serj Tankian's debut performance of Gate 21 with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, kicking off his Elect The Dead Symphony tour, partly because it's a beautiful song, and partly because I was there and it was bloody awesome ;) (and while we're at it, have a listen to Sugar to see why the band was labelled 'heavy mental' when they burst onto the scene)
A lot of fans seem to skip over 'steal this album', but there are some hidden gems. I'd absolutely love to hear your analysis of highway song. Beautiful harmonies and a strong Armenian flair in the instrumentals! Love your videos, Elizabeth. They bring me a lot of joy and always manage to put what I feel, into words and terminology that I find fascinating ❤
@10:20 I think the main symbolism or metaphor with the fire is that alongside it being everywhere, is nobody doing anything about it or registering it at all, continuing with their lives. That's what makes it depressing, isolating, and lonely. I imagine they get a sense of it while touring from town to town just how everywhere it is too.
Daron’s voice It’s unique and even though he is a funny, energetic and “crazy” kind of guy, his voice shows a lot of vulnerability and tenderness, something Mystic about it. This being said Guns N’ Roses - Estranged in Tokyo ‘92 or Rocket Queen are some of the Guns N’Roses performances i suggest. Axl Rose in his prime is the only, or at least one of the voices that just can’t be imitated perfectly, not even close.
@@MrCleytun One of the best for sure, hard for me to choose just one. But they have lots of gems that are not that known, such as Breakdown, Don’t Damn Me, Coma… etc
That version of Estranged is gut wrenching but somehow in a good way. It has to be the one from 22nd February though the singing is a bit crap. The one released on Live Era 83-93 is mostly re-recorded but sounds much better.
Elizabeth, I think you’re doing really great things for the understanding of modern popular music you’ve helped me reconnect with music. I’m in my 70s, and you’ve gone over some of the songs and music for my youth at a time when I stopped thinking about them you bring a joy and happiness that I find it hard to express. Love to you and your family
Watching you reacting to these songs from my youth brings me back to the feelings I had upon my first time listening to them as well. It's almost exciting to see people react to music the way you do, and actually enjoying it as if you've listened to them your whole life, but only now decide to truly analyze it.
Two SoaD recommendations: 1) Dreaming. A wild song with great harmonies and switches leads between Serj and Daron. 2) She's Like Heroin. My personal favorite SoaD song. Short song, but another Daron led song with Serj singing in the background all building up to a powerful final minute of, as expected, great harmony.
Really really really want to see you react to HIM. Ville Valo is a treasure of a vocalist with a hell of a range for a baritone voice. "The Funeral of Hearts" is a song that shows his vocal abilities well.
Daron has two solo albums with his group called "Scars on Broadway" that deserve to be listened too ... "Dictator" and the self titled "Scars on Broadway" where he displays his musical creativity and shows how SOADs lyrics and songs in general where quite influenced by him.
lol dude, daron is the main mind of soad by far, he wrote the lyrics and lines of almost every song from the band, and the mesmerize/hypnotize increase of daron's vocals is due to the fact he wished more space in the "lights". I remember, back in time, that this fact is what generated the conflicts that lead to the band's end; he even gave an interview where he said he wrote and created practically everything and he wanted more participation in his creation. If daron wasnt that important, the other 3 would just hire another guitarrist. And that is not what happend.
I've loved SOAD since the first time I heard them in 1998. But listening to you talk about their music and diagnose it, makes me love them so much more.
Radio/video from soad is such an interesting piece vocally speaking, a lot of diff techniques paces and voices, they also bring a lot of their culture In this song
Coming to support this choice of song. Its not the most elaborate song out there, but the harmonies are fun and the melody is that sort of song that will make you smile even before paying attention to what they're singing about.
That slide at the end transitions to Soldier Side, wich is also a great example of how Serj's and Daron's voices harmonizes really well. Another good example if you want to keep a mellow vibe is Roulette, it is just an acoustic guitar with Serj leading and Daron as a backing vocal.
Everybody keeps suggesting slow and melodic SOAD songs, but that's pretty much all that's already been covered. Next up really should be one of the faster, screamier ones. That, or go way back into their roots when they did all sorts of fun stuff. Something like BYOB or Attack for the former; Suite Pee or Sugar for the latter.
Yes great song. I don't know why but it reminds me of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" It has that same sense of melancholy and can make even the toughest guy get a bit misty eyed. If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favour and give it a listen. Cheers.
my personal most sad song is "Earthshine" by Summoning the lyrics in the last part just get me every time. but I think there is no song that has it all since different focus on different "shades" of emotions. another song for this matter would be "So Far Away" by Avenged Sevenfold, it makes my eyes teary always.
If I could recommend 2 song from SOAD, they would be ATWA or Roulette. Both very underrated but still one of their greatest songs. Not mainstream but you always hope to hear it live in concert.
Ooooo roulette! In my opinion the whole album "steal this album" is so underrated. It's some of their best work. And it's the start of darron singing more.
@Edboy Movies streamline is actually my favorite song on that whole album. Whenever I have system playing on random and its comes on I turn it up full blast and sing at the top of my lungs.
Roulette man....I don't if this expression exists in English but we say here in Brazil it's a Side B song (because of old LPs, where the most famous songs where on the side A, and the not mainstream one's were on the side B of the disc). But it's one my favorites from SOAD. Just an acoustic guittar (two actually, whatever), so much lighter than everything else. I even learned how to play it in my acoustic guittar. I just love this song so much.
Have you yet delved into the ugly, nostalgic, beauty of Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan's vocals? So many favourites to choose from but the resolute passion of "Stand Inside Your Love" is a stand out for me.
Absolutely! Can't believe I've forgotten about them. Now I'm gonna have to re-listen to some old songs from the era for a while, maybe some queens of the stone age, modest mouse and red hot chili peppers.
I think you’d enjoy Dreaming by System of a Down. It is an even crazier ride than Question! It has this operatic feel to it and it’s a very good song overall. Plus the lyrics mean a lot, granted that it’s SOAD we’re talking about lol
Every time I hear the end of of lonely day, I'm waiting for Soldier Side to start 😅😅. On the album, the sound at the end of Lonely Day is like the lead in to Soldier Side the outro track of Hypnotize and follows into the song! There is also an intro version of soldier side on the the mesmerize album, which made these like one album to listen to through!! Outro Soldier Side is another super cool song worth reviewing! Now to go listen to the both of them together to settle my brain 🤣🤣
I'd love to see you do some of Corey Taylors stuff. Snuff (Slipknot) and Bother (StoneSour) are both awesome songs that are powerful and full of meaning. You can hear the emotion in Coreys voice no matter what he sings. Listen to Bother as the studio version but I highly recommend checking our Corey perform it at his live acoustic show.
Yes!!! Holy Mountains is another good one, nice vocal sustain at the end. Here there's an image that pays homage to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here when the two men are shaking hands in the reflection Also, Daron's sickest solo hands down
Alter Bridge: Words Darker Than Their Wings (must be the live version)! The song has BOTH Mark and Myles singing back and forth to one another and the end has a high note that very few could ever hit…and Myles nails it! That high note is the reason why they don’t play it live often, and this was the first time they did. You won’t be disappointed.
In terms of other SOAD to listen to, Holy Mountains is such a raw, powerful one, and the swaps between softer and more powerful just makes the song live and breathe
Daron was the original lead singer of SOAD. Serj was the keyboard player till a producer recognized serj's voice which is why there was so much animosity in the band in the late 2000's
Good morning Elizabeth & everyone. This song makes me very emotional when I hear it, because I can relate deeply for I struggle with both depression & abandonment issues. Thank you so much for doing this reaction, wishing you & yours the very best!
Hypnotise and mesmerise were such great albums, with Daron really coming to the fore and then really played with their different styles and dynamics a lot more than in previous. I think you nailed it with ‘Daron cuts’. His voice really cuts through where Serj floats and soars. Incredible pairing. I’m so sad they never made any more music.
Oh it’s great to see Daron getting some love too, he seems to be under appreciated. Another great track with Daron on lead is Lost in Hollywood, terrific song worth checking out!
I'm very steadfastly falling in love with music from my teenage years again. I get to have a firm understanding as a 31 year old of what I find most enjoyable about music, the context of the lyrics and my perception of them now versus when I was younger. I tear up when I get the chance to sing music and feel the passion behind nu-metal/ metal music the most. Thank you for your time spent analyzing , it's such a wonderful journey every time.
I know it's not a song as famous as the other ones you've heard here, but I would LOVE to hear your take on the song Dreaming. It's crazy, it's fast paced, it's got some cool harmonies... I just believe it's truly am amazing song by them. Love your channel!!
I'm so happy you picked a song with a Daron lead. I always felt that SoaD has two lead singers, both very unique. Another song from them with him taking a spotlight, but having amazing background vocals from Serj, and great harmonies between them is Lost in Hollywood. I would love to hear you react to that. From other bands, I'd really appreciate Bat Country from Avenged Sevenfold or anything Guns N' Roses.
Theres a part in the video with two men shaking hands on fire. That is a tribute to Pink Floyd "Wish You Were Here" one of the best songs EVER written. I didn't see you react to that one.
Amo sus expresiones a medida que escucha... Y como se sorprende con cada detalle... Parece una niña. Me lleva a 18 años atrás, cuando descubrí esta banda y supe que su música me iba a gustar toda mi vida.
Really think you’d enjoy the 2015 live concert SOAD did in Armenia! I found they leaned more into their Armenian influences during their performance and it’s just one of the coolest recorded shows I’ve seen.
I would be very interested in a breakdown of I‐E‐A‐I‐A‐I‐O from SOAD as it is a song composed from quasi tongue-twisters. Another song which would be an even more interesting analysis would be Ego Brain from SOAD since it has in my opinion fascinating vocals. Thanks for the videos they are always there to uplift my mood and curiosity
God I love and cherish your authentic excitement about music of all kinds, it's so endearing. I've loved SOAD all my life. Though, I became a musician in my teens, and veered away from a lot of that stuff I grew up with. Nevertheless, SOAD always stayed with me. They have a special place in my heart. Perhaps it's because I have Armenian heritage, and thus share a deep connection with them, but they really are a special band. And it's so cool to relive the excitement and wonder I felt upon listening them to the first time through you. Thank you for your lovely videos and reactions. Long time lurker, but big fan. Stay true to who you are, it's great.
I always love when you do a SOAD song. Great things combined and a perfect way to start the weekend.😊 A song I recently stumbled over again that I can really recommend you listen to is Nina Hagen's cover of Rammstein's Seemann that she did together with Apocalyptica. Low female vocals, Rammstein and electric cellos. what's not to love? 😆
I had forgotten how effective and cool that guitar solo was, so I was reacting right along with you. As others have said, Soldier Side is another great Daron-centric track.
1:38 I actually had to pull up the tabs for both songs, and you were basically spot on. The chord progressions are exactly the same, and in fact, the riffs are nearly identical. They're both in 6/8 time, though SOAD used Drop C tuning, as opposed to the Animals, who used E Standard tuning, and the other difference in the riffs is that the riff for "Lonely Day" uses one less fretted note than House Of The Rising Sun. (6 fretted notes in the riffs of Lonely Day, 7 Fretted notes for House Of The Rising Sun)
Daron and Serj always have had a beautiful harmony together, thier voices play off the other and just make something more. Realizing two weeks later I had misspelled Serj with a g. DOH!!
I remember taking an iPod and walking through my dorm at band camp in WI as a 16 year old just playing this out loud. People would just come out of their rooms and start following and we all were singing together. I can’t even begin to explain how much this band has influenced me throughout my life beginning in my teen years.
You should check out "Suggestions" by System of a Down. Surge does things with his voice that I am still in absolute shock from 25 years later. Highly recommend it!! (Also, thanks for putting a spotlight on such a great band!)
My vote for the next SOAD song would be Holt Mountains - strong vocals and harmonization. Also heave use of the "E" vowel. Definitely one of my favorite songs. Also unique in its own right and powerful
I am a simple woman: I see a new The Charismatic Voice SOAD analysis, I immediately watch it. I adore your work and I'm secretly hoping for a future Linkin Park analysis again! 💛
Some of my favorite skills with this band is their ability to make one song sound like multiple strung together with different themes. And their amazing attention to detail with their lyric choices. A great example is Prison Song. It has a complete mood change half way through and the lyrics are very politically driven. So many layers to experience.
I'd like to suggest coheed and Cambria. The tracks welcome home, a favor house Atlantic, or the suffering all showcase their singer very well. And some of the newer tracks like Shoulders prove that he takes very good care of his voice.
I always cry while I listen to this song and this album. This album came out 2 years after the start of the Iraq War.... and its such an important album of this era...

Great analogy. Fantastic song.

I love how Daron looks absolutely insane and then has this beautiful angelic voice 💀
...and he's absolutely insane, too
"Hypnotize" is the logical next SOAD song to take a look at. Daron and Serj share the vocal load pretty evenly and the way they alternate singing their individual parts feels almost like they're having a conversation.
I agree fully. Love it
I would direct attention towards Radio/Video as another fantastic choice of song to look at for pretty much the exact same reasons you gave for Hypnotize.

I love their cover of metro, I've heard the song and prefer systems version lol
@@edboymovies My first guitar riff was from their song "Dam", and the last one as well 😂
@edboymovies it's a cover??? Who originally preformed it
The siren at the end is met to transition into Soldier Side (the last song on the Hypnotize Album).
Holy mountains into vicinity of obscenity
Daron also writes a lot of SOAD's songs, he's often overshadowed by Serj but he deserves so much credit!
Serj is frickin awesome, but Daron is frickin awesome too and SOAD wouldn't be SOAD without him
You can really hear who contributed what to soad when you listen to scars on broadway (daron's band) and serj's solo work. You can sort of mix their two sounds in your head and you get system of a down. Its pretty neat
i do this a lot. lol@@timhorton8085
Agreed they are all amazing talents in this band
Writes all their songs lol
For the unaware, the general consensus is Lonely Day was written about Daron’s brother who tragically passed away in a house fire.
I would love to see you check out Soldier Side. It is the best example of their harmonies, as the entire song is sung by them in harmony. It is stunning, and an absolute emotional gut-punch.
Soldier Side indeed. My absolute favorite!!
This is absolutely the coolest thing
This! I always wanted to comment this. Soldier side is so, so beautiful.
I was just thinking about commenting this then I' e found you, man, this is the best explanation a big fan could give 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I almost got to see them on tour with Korn. Unfortunately 2020 was a bad year for concerts.
Lost in Hollywood is probably my favorite Daron lead song, though its hard to compare to Lonely Day
“Dreaming” is a really intense song off of the same album as lonely day, with a lot of diverse layers. I highly recommend it next!
she has to listen to Dreaming omlllll
I love her comments about one of the greatest bands ever.
Soldier side is absolutely beautiful and so incredibly powerful . You get a lot of both serj and Daron and the emotion here is heart wrenching.
ATWA is another powerful one for serj and its probably my favorite and has been for years. ❤️❤️
Agreed! Though it's sad how Soldier Side has clipping issues in the high parts of the song. Damn overcompression and brickwalling.
Yes!
Soldier side is my favourite SOAD song
She absolutely nailed what makes SOAD special. The diversity from song to song. That being said, I hope to see BYOB in the future. Cheers!
And nobody could "imitate" Daron or Serj's voice or style of sing. What a special band
Another good song is Guns Are Loaded, thinking in the vocal performance of Daron
SoB are amazing.
Daron has a great voice, he is the lead singer in his band Scars on Broadway. He has 2 albums out and they are both great!
That siren sounds bring me so much nostalgia from my childhood.
It's things like this that makes playing the entirety of both albums back to back such a cool listen. It's the full circle thing
Once I hear that sound I get the album stuck in my head immediately
I love Soldier Side, it's so emotional and dark
Soldier Side oh boy, powerful song. Been some time since I heard it, thanks for the reminder
Scars is so underrated, IMO.
PLEASE, do Holy Mountains by system of a down. Its got godly hypnotising vocals with a vivid rhythm, that produces a plethora of emotions.
Holy Mountains and Innervision are so great!
This
Holy mountains has always been my favorite song of theirs since it came out
This song is about the loss of a loved one.
Lost in Hollywood is one of my favorites by SOAD, and their live performances of that song are downright emotional.
You should've never gone to Hollywoooooood 😭😭😭🔥🔥
I can't listen to this song without tearing up. Every time, even watching this video. Keep listening to SOAD. Such an important band.
If you want more SOAD. Please do Forest, Boom! Or BYOB if you haven't already
Forest is my fave SOAD song it's incredible
Forest is one of my absolute favorites!
Forest is the song that got me into System
@@adamhines9866 Mine too!
And because you treat us so well by listening to the songs we suggest, I'll never stop suggesting Serj Tankian's debut performance of Gate 21 with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, kicking off his Elect The Dead Symphony tour, partly because it's a beautiful song, and partly because I was there and it was bloody awesome ;)
(and while we're at it, have a listen to Sugar to see why the band was labelled 'heavy mental' when they burst onto the scene)
I wonder if copyright strikes are an issue with Guns N Roses.
@@MetalPersonJ I don’t think so… at least not as bad as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin…
Estranged would be awesome, it's the best song from GNR but sadly not the most known...
Her passion for what she does is amazing! Gets me every time.
Watching you reacting to these songs from my youth brings me back to the feelings I had upon my first time listening to them as well. It's almost exciting to see people react to music the way you do, and actually enjoying it as if you've listened to them your whole life, but only now decide to truly analyze it.
"Holy Mountains" Of SOAD it's so magical, i want you to analyze it ! 😸, i love it.
Lost in Hollywood is another track where he's featured more. And again has more of their fantastic harmonies. Enjoy!
Amen! Both awesome albums that deserve some love.
Love both those records. They are freakin' amazing actually.
lol dude, daron is the main mind of soad by far, he wrote the lyrics and lines of almost every song from the band, and the mesmerize/hypnotize increase of daron's vocals is due to the fact he wished more space in the "lights". I remember, back in time, that this fact is what generated the conflicts that lead to the band's end; he even gave an interview where he said he wrote and created practically everything and he wanted more participation in his creation. If daron wasnt that important, the other 3 would just hire another guitarrist. And that is not what happend.
Perez from from scars in Hollywood is also amazing. He can play guitar and sing along with their and very well with Darren
Seconded, Radio/Video is my favorite SOAD song tied with Toxicity
in what way do you think it brings a lot of "their" culture? polka is not an Armenian genre.
Coming to support this choice of song. Its not the most elaborate song out there, but the harmonies are fun and the melody is that sort of song that will make you smile even before paying attention to what they're singing about.
exactly what i was thinking, its the perfect song to see their vocals in harmony!
Excited to see this one!
That slide at the end transitions to Soldier Side, wich is also a great example of how Serj's and Daron's voices harmonizes really well. Another good example if you want to keep a mellow vibe is Roulette, it is just an acoustic guitar with Serj leading and Daron as a backing vocal.
It's been almost 20 years since they put an album out. The world perhaps more than ever needs their music
They just recently put out an album. I would say not as good as before, but still decent
@@Xivixion what album, lol@
Ahhh damn, I misremembered, tis was just a song...
@@Xivixionit was two songs! Protect the Land and Genocidal Humanoids. Not my favorite songs but I gratefully accept every scrap SOAD gives me 🥲
No one needs Serj's bullshit ego. Let him continue with his solo projects 🤣
A good friend died of covid in 2021. I cried heavily and mourned him while listening to this song. Thanks for loving SOAD as much as we do.
Lost ls in Hollywood for me is one of the best SOAD songs, you see the harmony in the music and in the voices of Daron and Serj
Lonely Day is one of the most rip-your-soul-out emotional songs I've ever heard, from any genre.
Not similar sounding, per se... but this song reminds me "Hollow" by Pantera for the reason you stated.
Yes great song. I don't know why but it reminds me of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day"
It has that same sense of melancholy and can make even the toughest guy get a bit misty eyed.
If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favour and give it a listen. Cheers.
It's Hurt from Johnny Cash for me that I cannot listen to without shedding a tear or two. I'm a grown man goddammit...
my personal most sad song is "Earthshine" by Summoning the lyrics in the last part just get me every time.
but I think there is no song that has it all since different focus on different "shades" of emotions.
another song for this matter would be "So Far Away" by Avenged Sevenfold, it makes my eyes teary always.
@@abelsz4407 I think it speaks volumes that Trent Reznor said that this song wasn't his anymore after listening to Johnny Cash's version.
Absolutely love that Daron is able to have his voice be featured. This band is beyond talented and there is nothing they cannot do.
Except come to an agreement on the band's internal conflicts.
@@nikkiwallace3328 true, I love the harmonies in Streamline. Innervision is nice as well
@Edboy Movies streamline is actually my favorite song on that whole album. Whenever I have system playing on random and its comes on I turn it up full blast and sing at the top of my lungs.
I like ATWA
Roulette man....I don't if this expression exists in English but we say here in Brazil it's a Side B song (because of old LPs, where the most famous songs where on the side A, and the not mainstream one's were on the side B of the disc). But it's one my favorites from SOAD. Just an acoustic guittar (two actually, whatever), so much lighter than everything else. I even learned how to play it in my acoustic guittar. I just love this song so much.
One of the best bands ever. Those last 2 albums were masterpieces. From the music to the production to the mixing. Everything. Just amazing
“It’s a day that Im glad I survived” says it all. ❤️ 🔥
I love both of their voice's and they harmonize extremely well. The very last note of this song is haunting.
For me, smashing pumpkins are great in spite of corgans voice, not because of it
@@Jeremy-hx7zj It's certainly distinctive!
This next song is called, The smashing pumpkins lost their car keys. 🙃
It’s possible she doesn’t like his voice and doesn’t want to put out anything too negative
I think you’d enjoy Dreaming by System of a Down. It is an even crazier ride than Question! It has this operatic feel to it and it’s a very good song overall. Plus the lyrics mean a lot, granted that it’s SOAD we’re talking about lol
Dreaming is S tier, but unfortunately it never gets mentions
Here there's an image that pays homage to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here when the two men are shaking hands in the reflection
Also, Daron's sickest solo hands down
Alter Bridge: Words Darker Than Their Wings (must be the live version)! The song has BOTH Mark and Myles singing back and forth to one another and the end has a high note that very few could ever hit…and Myles nails it! That high note is the reason why they don’t play it live often, and this was the first time they did. You won’t be disappointed.
The harmony between them is on the level of Layne and Jerry.. Check out Scars on Broadway for more "just Daron" 2 great albums
“Universe” by Scars on Broadway guitars get me emotional and i have no idea why hahah. Great band
Dictator was a fantastic album. I go back to it fairly often
Elizabeth ,you make me love all these songs even more. Thank you!
Buried Alive by Avenged Sevenfold
for sure bro, that one i highly expect
And if there is a short version of it with a video please choose the regular version
Ofc
I’ve tried so hard to like that band.
I just can’t. 😂
The entire "the stage" album is a masterpiece
This song came to me during a bad time in my life and i firmly believe it helped keep me around!
Same. I'd play it over and over and sing along with it. It helped me deal with the situation.
Yes! Serj and Daren love to switch pitches back and forth during harmonizing. It's so fun!
Great things combined and a perfect way to start the weekend.😊
A song I recently stumbled over again that I can really recommend you listen to is Nina Hagen's cover of Rammstein's Seemann that she did together with Apocalyptica.
Thank you! I never noticed before but the second she said that I knew it was similar and I was hoping someone would break it down in the comments.
A Mashup exists right here on the tube
Dude exactly, I would just love to see what she has to say about this song. I’m sad more people aren’t recommending it.
I'm so glad you've finally done this song! It's one of my favorites of theirs. There's a sense of melancholy that resonates throughout and I love it!
Me too!
Me too! I used to be obsessed with this song 10-15 years ago
My vote for the next SOAD song would be Holt Mountains - strong vocals and harmonization. Also heave use of the "E" vowel. Definitely one of my favorite songs. Also unique in its own right and powerful
His tone clearing and becoming more... flat/mellow at the end, when compared back-to-back with the intro, really hammers home the narrative.
That solo gives me goosebumps every time
I am a simple woman: I see a new The Charismatic Voice SOAD analysis, I immediately watch it.
Second this, I keep mentioning it in the hope Elizabeth will react to them.
@kerryoliver2935 lol I've been commenting on every video on and off for months. Keep it up. There's got to be plenty of us. Tens of us even.
@@OranGate1 There's at least three! Coheed and Cambria please!
One thing that I notice after watching some of your reactions video is Elizabeth, you're so expressive! That makes the reaction looks more lively 😁
I always cry while I listen to this song and this album.
This album came out 2 years after the start of the Iraq War.... and its such an important album of this era...
