They jumped the shark with the price increases. It’s no longer aspirational, you just lose the desire to pursue it, which is most dangerous for a company bottom line.

If only people would stop buying and paying those ridiculous prices, they would slow down with all of these price increases. Influencers don't help the situation because they are the main ones buying these luxury items and bags, and people feel like, "Hey, I want that too." It's a ridiculous cycle that won't stop until we stop buying. The quality of most of these items gets worse and worse. The more in demand these items become. I'd rather buy preloved if I know it's selling at a decent price. Even preloved item prices are ridiculous sometimes. We just need to know when to say no. Enough is enough. Thanks, Cas, a great video.

I agree with you. I’m only a teacher in France and I save up for a long time to be able to afford some of this stuff, like an Hermes shawl or a pendant from Cartier or VCA. It takes years sometimes, but I’m happy to do it as the item is a dream and will last me a long time. Now however, it’s like they tell people like me « well don’t bother, you’re not interesting to us ». They make it even harder for « little » customers if that makes sense. And it’s a shame really.

Using inflation/etc as an excuse to raise prices on already seriously overpriced stuff is basically saying "we think you are stupid" to their clientele. Cutting out your aspirational customers is also a horrid mistake. Your aspiration customer of today could be your "I don't care the price" customer of tomorrow. And if they thought the sales levels that happened during and right after the pandemic were normal, what a ridiculous thing to base anything on. Now who is stupid? You may not be a business person, but you're spot on. It's all crazy.

this, pricing out aspirational shoppers seems intentional. luxury, especially big houses, bank on name, and exclusivity. but they've been too many aspirational shoppers. esp those that can't and won't ever be converted. too many items in circulations, just look at neverfulls.
resale is a bit different. imo those aspirational shoppers they try pricing out, also aren't ones going on resale sites. most people on resale seem like more traditional aspirational types, or already "fully converted". certain percenatge of vics prob moved over to resale, at least partially, bc of what you said.
EDIT if this sounds classist af, I agree it is, but that's the way luxury fashion operates

A portion of the problem are influencers. This is simply a supply and demand scenario now. There’s more attention and engagement with these houses than ever before so people really want this stuff rather they can afford it or not. Previously the only way you would know what something costs is through a sneak peek in a magazine or a trip to the actual boutique. Now the price increases are whole freaking press releases. Chanel is not doing themselves a favor since people have already been complaining about quality since the last 5 price increases.

Cassie, I love this conversation. I love fashion but I have no interest in brand names. I’m about quality, utility, and the aesthetics. I buy contemporary brands and hunt for quality materials and construction for a good price. I have always liked looking at luxury designers for the craftsmanship but that seems less and less what it’s about. Most of these articles of clothing can’t even be cleaned at the dry cleaners. There is a dry cleaning channel here on RUclips where he does a series called “stupid expensive things that can’t be cleaned” (or something to that effect) and this is telling. These designers are making these articles of clothing to be disposable. There is no lifespan of the product being thought about. It’s all being treated so frivolously, thoughtlessly and vapidly by these luxury brands. I have some crocodile in my collection and it is not hard wearing and I will not be buying it again. Quality and longevity of an item matter. And while I was never going to be someone who paid those luxury designer prices for their goods, it is this that I can’t stand along with the continued price increases. Great video, Cassie. Love your channel and how you talk about things that most others don’t.

Crocodile skin is incredibly hard wearing - but only whilst the crocodile wears it. The treatments required to turn it into a handbag remove all that armour plating it had as an animal and turn into something delicate, that’s what makes it a luxurious material.

Having been on the finance side of fashion for over 10 years, there is no way they can blame inflation for the sheer volumes of uplifts. Real wages have not changed that much. Yes up 8-12% for the inputs, but when you look at the mark ups the increases are far more.
Chanel is a funny one. Their new CEO came from HR at a FMCG so hasn't a clue about art and design. But comes from a volume background. Tapping into the new wealth from emerging markets. More money than sense - and with a lack of interest in sustainability and animal welfare.
The Quality persona for luxury customers are the sort of people who will go for mid-tier brands as they understand the value of money. Why go for Chloe when you can opt down for a Sandro, Acne Studios, even Sezane etc. The big houses are alienating the Quality shoppers missing that their loyalty is a much lower cost of acquisition, and didn't need a Brad Pitt video.

I think there's also something to be said about the prices being the same globally, but not every country has the same level of salaries for example. A person doing the same work in NYC and Helsinki, Finland will certainly not be paid the same. Even if that job and person might be someone that the brand would like to cater their products to. So will the price increases actually start to chop off entire countries from client lists, or have they perhaps done that already?

Zimmerman' s prices have also gone insane. They have lost a lot of their original customer base.

The profit margins in these items are crazy and although some costs have obviously increased they don’t even come close to their prices increases. I live in Spain where a lot of luxury brands produce their bags and you can get fabulous quality leather bags for a fraction of the price. And yes the prices of those have also gone up, but nowhere close to his luxury houses as the labor costs are still so low.

These days I just wait for the sales as most luxury multi brand sites have 30%-50% often. Or when the Fashion houses do secret sales. I don’t really care about how old a piece is if I like it I'm buying 😂. Only regret is not buying a chanel bag when some of the popular styles were 2.5k & under in 13/14😢

So glad you broached this topic! It takes strategy to be a smart shopper these days than ever before. And buyers have tremendous power to affect the market so as long as people keep buying the hype it will continue. Smart shopping is finding value, what's unique exciting & Kool across the whole of the market. Totally agree Why be manipulated into spending ten times more ?

With all the influences wearing designer clothes they need to increase the price to keep the brand “exclusive” For me is ridiculous how people are still buying

  • @yasmeennaheed3934

Firstly the prices don’t meet the quality and also brands are pushing exclusivity to the next level. They don’t want just anybody to be wearing their pieces, I don’t know if that is problematic or good marketing

Paradoxically, I’ve never seen more people carrying designer things in my life than now. These brands have un-excluded themselves through social media, e-commerce, and conspicuous consumption. They feel less special and more expensive than ever.

You mentioned something really interesting about all these brands dropping so many products at once to compete with each other…does this really mean that our products are even luxury and well thought through especially leather goods (handbags etc) ? Or just more a quick cash grab for the designers? Would love to hear your thought.

The new and upcoming generations don’t care about luxury brands, the things they value are so different than what our generation want when we were younger. They don’t go like, ‘someday I want to buy a brand name bag just like my mom’s or aunt’s’. They don’t even want the kind of watches or cars that we like. Unless something is truly rare, it’s hard to imagine these prices going up can sustain.

Cassie, you shared a Luxury brand pyramid a few videos ago. The same pyramid theory could be used to show the business/economic aspect of each luxury brand.
I think we would see the bottom tier, everyday consumers are the most bankable financial resource for such luxury brands. (In other words, their purchases provide constant liquid funds for the brand.)
Although 40% is a sizable percentage of a company’s business, they are banking on a % which is not guaranteed.

I still can't believe how extreme Chanel is pushing price increases, while its quality is decreasing. I work with a lot of designer handbags, doing quality checking etc, and sometimes I find these recent Chanel's are worse than the Fakes. the Caviar is weird, the composition is slanted. ugh.

I loved your approach. You're a buyer in this world and can outbid many but you still know what's reasonable. Generational wealth maybe give you that perspective. I think that the wannabes that want to post a picture "me and my bag" are hurt by this the most and will take to fakes even more. They cannot afford those prices really. Aside from 1-5% crowd, even a rich person will see a bit of a tacky logo in a t-shirt (in my opinion) and will judge whether he/she likes it or values the money and prefers it being spent on a company, another location, house, renovation. Businessmen didn't get to be rich by overspending like that and often value the money and hate being taken advantage of. It's influencers job. All the purses but not that cute apartment. (housing $ are a lot but it's still easier to buy a bag than a house). That's crucial. Not many people want to be a clown due to vanity. I noticed such people prefer pricier but still reasonable outfits for skiing, other sports and so only on for those in the know.
The person who buys not that often but for quality and not bragging might get a final push "is it truly worth it?". that person doesn't care about rotating clothes and bags all the time. Can wait. Or buy one and be done. I totally agree about the Miu Miu set. Cute but not so special for this $ It's totally ironic because.. the truly rich are always richer than you but love your other qualities you bring to the table like character. Would I try to impress Musk, Bezos with those outfits? No, they'll soon see I'm a wannabe!

I heard ferragamo hasn’t been “selling” and that shook me to the core thinking they’d get rid of Max and that should not happen. brands should be allowed to “coast” when the economy is the way it is. Especially when you actually have a talented young designer behind your brand. some brands shouldn’t be given that grace but please let Max cook!

Time to become our own designers; our own creators and producers. People who were fashionable in the 80s didn’t have luxury mindsets necessarily. They were creative out of necessity. I believe this will fuel a blossoming of individuality and creativity in younger generations we haven’t seen in decades. At least I hope. And that will be the new aspiration.

Such a great video Cassie (as always) thanks. ♥ But yes, I am still young and has been a fan of these beautiful things since forever... Working my a** off to save and have the extreme pleasure to gift myself something that I (ME) find gorgeous and worth of MY money. But I slowly gave up, because we just cannot keep up. Even the preloved market (which is logical if retail just keeps going up in prices)... And it pains me, because I still have that passion and love in me ! People will say "why would you buy if you can't afford anyway" ; "just buy things you can afford, why always the luxury names". WELL because it's there and my eyes love it and it gives me joy? 😂 Anyway, it's absurd now and one can only keep dreaming!

So while it personally does hurt to feel like I'm being priced out of my favorite brand, that is in fact my reality. I'm a once a year luxury shopper at this point and when even that rate slows, I'll be disappointed but not surprised. 🤷🏽‍♀️

What about those who want to treat themselves something little, that’s not as crazy priced. They’re started to fade out now. Personally I think these “Big Social Media Influencers” have a lot to do with it. Everyday there’s something new… not many people can have the new “IT” bag from each designer 🥵 or a tank top for £1,700 … I’d rather spend that luxury money on a second hand bag. Gah! I could go on 😅😅 Great Video as per usual 💜🥰

I think the worst thought that I have is that maybe there is a big jump in income in the well healed customer. The aspirational customer is being squeezed, but the upper crust customer is actually making more money and so these prices don’t seem to be phasing them. Could be the neo feudalism is starting to kick in.
