There is indeed a difference between the old and new strings, and much of it is high-end and clarity.
And now, if I may give you some advice, never use steel wool to remove gunk and lemon oil to condition your fretboards.
Even if you use the finest grade 000000 steel wool, you're putting fine scratches on it. And the lemon oil will eventually start drying out and pitting the fretboard.
If the fretboard and frets are really gunky, use some Naptha sparingly with a dry cloth or Murphy's Oil Soap and a toothbrush to get it off.
My personal choice to do both jobs very effectively is to use Music Nomad F-ONE Oil; that stuff is the absolute best and it lasts for months.
And I can't stress enough the importance of wiping down your guitar from top to bottom after each time you play, with particular emphasis put on the fretboard, frets and top/bottom of the strings to keep everything clean so they don't get all gunked up, and also your strings will last longer and not go dead too quick.

A lot depends on how well you care for your strings… in a reasonably dry atmosphere where they’re not rusting up, being played and wiped down etc. all factor it to how long they “last” - also there’s a huge difference on acoustic instruments… don’t forget how the string movement is turned into sound is fundamentally different between electric & acoustic instruments

Brand New strings feel sticky to me. Gotta play them for a few hours before they smooth out and stay in tune. After that it's butter 😍

My buddy had 8 year old strings on his bass. Never changed since he bought it. I came over to jam and changed them for him before we started

Brand new strings will never sound great. Guessing how much you play, I think the better sound test would 3-day old or week old strings vs 3-month old 🤷‍♂️. Love to see that follow up if possible. Love the channel, keep it up!

Yep. I got so triggered in the studio with this. Our drumer gave me his stingray bc it just sounded better than the cheap bass I had at the time. He wanted to go supernice and so he put on brandnew bass strings the day before the studio. When I touched the first time in the studio I was like oh no mate we probably have a problem now to solve

Gonna still have to agree with what J. Mascis says, new strings feel off. It feels better having that grip old strings provide

The new ones sound better for a full range for sure but with this riff you might want to adjust your bass a bit to get the creamy sound the riff needs

I prefer the 3 month old if that's what's going on. The more dead and dull sound seemed to squash the harmonics and sounded cleaner to me because there was less harmonic content

New strings a lot more definition and attack, old ones a lot mellower/smoother tone, personal preference I guess.

  • @exoprasta

Newer ones are always crisper…sadly no string manufacturers can make strings stay crisp for very long. The diff may be minuscule for listeners, but the guitarist/sound engineer the diff is more pronounced than they’d like to believe…

New strings sound way more crisp. In terms of tone, it's up to preference which sounds better. In terms of playability, old strings go out of tune way faster in my experience, so anything past 2 months old needs to be replaced.
