Land Rover Discovery Sport Remains A Proper Luxury Off-Roader For The Family
The Land Rover Discovery Sport receives some welcome updates for 2024, keeping it fresh in the highly competitive premium SUV segment. While not a complete redesign, the visual tweaks, technology upgrades, and new plug-in hybrid powertrain help modernize the Discovery Sport's appeal.
Familiar But Fresher Styling
On the outside, the 2024 Discovery Sport gets a revised front end with slimmer LED headlights, a reshaped grille, and resculpted front bumper. The rear also sees some minor nip-and-tuck with new LED taillights. Overall, the styling remains upright and boxy in proper Land Rover fashion.
The interior benefits from higher-quality materials and a thoroughly modern new infotainment system. The 11.4-inch curved glass display runs the latest Pivi Pro software, finally providing the Discovery Sport with graphics and processing power befitting a luxury SUV. Most physical buttons have been removed for a cleaner design, though some may lament the lack of hard controls.
Hybrid Power Joins The Lineup
Under the hood, Land Rover continues to offer its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in mild-hybrid gas and diesel flavors. But the big news is the addition of a plug-in hybrid P300e model, pairing a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder to an electric motor and 14.9 kWh battery pack. This allows an estimated 38 miles of electric-only driving range.
Although the P300e powertrain boosts output to a strong 305 horsepower, it does come at the expense of the available third-row seating due to battery packaging. Those needing seven seats will have to stick with the gas or diesel engines.
Off-Road Prowess Remains A Priority
No matter which powertrain you choose, the Discovery Sport maintains its impressive off-road capability thanks to standard all-wheel drive and Land Rover's Terrain Response system. While based on a unibody car platform, the Disco Sport can still tackle tough terrain and wade through nearly two feet of water when properly equipped.
The interior provides plenty of room for passengers and cargo, though the third row remains cramped for adult use. An optional air suspension can raise the ride height for extra clearance, while keeping the Discovery Sport planted and comfortable on pavement.
Prices start at around $43,500 for the base Discovery Sport S, while the plug-in hybrid P300e models open at $55,300. That positions the compact Land Rover as a more affordable alternative to larger three-row luxury SUVs like the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, while offering more capability than similarly-sized crossovers.
If you want a premium SUV that can really get down and dirty, yet remain properly posh for the country club valet, the 2024 Land Rover Discovery Sport aims to provide that unique blend of talents. The updates keep it feeling fresh, though some quirks and compromises remain compared to more car-like crossover rivals.
