Love that you mentioned Hi-Fi Rush! It was such a shining example of a game with a lower budget but great art direction, great gameplay, and was also shadow-dropped with no marketing. It's such a shame the studio got shut down because Hi-Fi Rush is just the kind of game we needed more.

I couldn't agree more! We need more games like Hi-Fi Rush. I personally really enjoy the more lower budget games now adays over the triple A games.

Normies care about graphics because videogames are beneath them. The only reason why they're getting into the hobby is because it's the new hot trending thing and they don't want to be left behind. So for them to play, graphics matters because atleast they won't feel ashamed playing something that looks really, really good and looks really, really cool.

The people that really care about graphics, are those that keep upgrading their video cards!
I care about the game, i still play Amtgard and its clones which are rogue like games that use ascii for the character and monsters!
I also play mostly turn based games, other that No Mans Sky and Minecraft!

I’ll take a game with great gameplay with alright graphics over games with bad gameplay but amazing graphics.

max is right. many gamers don't really care about graphics anymore. a game could be a 2d sidescroller, but have an amazing open world, tons of side activities, and great voice acting, great story, etc. it's no like 10 or 15 years ago where most of us were wanting better graphics. nowadays people would rather hssve a game that has bad graphics but great gameplay instead of great graphics but shitty gameplay

then again there are the gamers that think graphics always come first. hell there's gamers who think they make the graphics of the games first when developing a game, when it reality devs focusing on gameplay first, then the graphics later. those type of gamers don't care if the gameplay is shitty, they care only about graphics

I love great graphics. I'm someone who needs to buy a mid to high end card every other gen and am frustrated that I didn't buy a 4090 at launch letting myself get stuck on a 3080...and the games I've played the most over the last 2 years? Baldur's Gate 3, Persona 5 Royal and Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Go figure. I did play Cyberpunk a ton in it's first year and put another 85 or so hours in when Phantom Liberty released as well, so it _kinda_ might have been justified?
Speaking of which, I'm completely fine with Persona 5 Royal level graphics _in most_ games. I think most people are. As great as something like CP2077 looks, a cartoonish dark cell shaded stylized 3rd person anime CP2077 game would have been *HUGE* as well while probably coming in $200M less expensive to make (almost $500M when all was said and done, good fricken grief!). P5R only cost $10M USD give or take to remaster/+ add-ons and sold 3M+ copies on PC alone. 10M for a $180M return + wtv Microsoft gave them for the Gamepass deal? That's a pretty solid investment.
AAA devs...game devs and publishers in general really need to settle down and save the ridiculous budgets for a select few games. It's become so commonplace it almost doesn't matter how photorealistic things look. Whether Frontiers of Pandora or Immortals of Avium, people want good games first, and the bleeding edge graphics simply don't push units like they used to.
And there's the problem. Most AAA devs or studios receiving a ton of money from Vanguard, Blackrock and State Street have to meet so many quotas for various things that making a good game is nearly impossible. Not only do we have an inclusion list for the game itself, but for who makes it, who writes it etc.. If the majority of the programmers are straight white dudes then the majority of the writers simply HAVE to be queer minorities. Not a problem if the talent pool is there, but a big problem when it isn't. It's typically not. Competing with every other industry for talent video games have found themselves in an awful spot, and until they start trying to make games fun for their target audience as opposed to building a new one based on _modern tastes_ which they decide on and approve of they could make a game that looked just like _"Bladerunner"_ and it wouldn't make it's budget + marketing back, whereas if they went the stylized route they very well might.

Yeah I think from everything you've mentioned is exactly why we are starting to see indie games do so well since most of them are just fun to play. Like Stardew Valley, not to triple A graphics. but the graphics are stylized and look good enough to be pleasing to the eyes is incredibly fun and has addicting gameplay loop that I'm starting to get an itch to play it for a third time. I also like having the latest hardware for have the best graphics but if the gameplay isn't fun for a graphicly demanding game I'm going back to Stardew lol
