Once in awhile I huck a bait that I don't think anything can eat. So far I've learned that a person needs a rig with something bigger than 40lb braid when a monster like that gets hungry, at least when you're near structure.
And that’s why I use 120lb test!
@@MicahsMotors most of the stuff I fish is so small and heavily fished that 15lbs is about as big as it gets and you might see one of those a year if you're lucky, most folks wouldn't believe you if you told them you caught a 15lb fish. I stepped it up to 80 on my hail Mary rig though.
Yeah I just do it so I don’t lose any fish, but where I’m at the sturgeon get quite big so you never know if you’ll get a 100+
Did the ol’ “full chicken leg” bait last Sat night and had something swim off with it with some serious intent. Didn’t get much past the hook set and “snap”… I have since upgraded two of my rigs with new line and new reels that are more geared towards big kitties.
65 lb braid is good stuff. It's not quite rope, but it's big enough for most applications. Not too hard to untangle when a duck is flying too low, either. Yeah, that sucks.

Anytime I throw big stuff seems like the only the overly ambitious ones mess with it any usually miss the hook. Hopefully we get to see that 60 before the season is over. Good stuff man, keep it up.

You know light is light no matter if you are color blind. I see purple sheets my mom gave me but says they're brown. I still see them. Nightcrawlers still bounce when red light hits them. All the nocturnal Animals in the Zoos had their retinas burned out because of a mistake.

We use that size baits all the time on bank poles down here. Carp are big flatheads main diet. That size eliminates the little 15 pounders😲. It's big fish month so get out there and get em. We've only been able to catch a measley 52 so far but there's still time. Love the camping vids. Great vid and keep your powder dry and your pantry stocked young man 💪😎🙏

I threw a carp that big on a like right behind Sac Taylor one night a few years back. Only had 6/0 hooks with me. It got hit so hard i nearly lost my rod, but unfortunately no hook up

I kyak fish the Mississippi River in Illinois. I think I have some pretty fair Flathead spots for daytime, depending on water level, but I think if I was to fish them at night with baits like that carp it could get real interesting, especially since I’d be tied off not on the bank the whole time. I need to try stuff like that and baits half that size or that size more often.

there's a guy in AZ that caught a 67 lb. flathead and I was told he used a 5 lb. carp for bait.

I use whole gizzard shad between a pound and two pounds 16 inch bait can easily be eaten by a 20 lb fish 1 to 2 lb channel rats with a 12/0 hook work well too you would be surprised how big of a bait flatheads can eat

You know what that's right there at carp is the only reason I go to pay lakes when I do go is because the fight they put up sometimes they're really good fights and when I catch that 26 to 27 pounder I win money where the money's at and still enjoyment of fishing but nothing like river fishing for them big ole ugly flats and there are some big ones here in white river never ever eat a fish from there but fun to catch

I usually keep a handful in the 5-15 lb range. I've kept two this year, and recorded video of them. Unfortunately the audio was messed up.

About the only thing can't use in pa as bait is carp can't even use cut carp but can use game fish. I use 14-16" trout and flatheads love them

I only use stocked trout so by mid may in western pa they are gone. This year one place does get a first week in October stocking I'll probably go get a few it's a pain keeping them alive have to use 4 Mr bubbles but even using whole dead trout works amazing in the lil river I fish the shenango river and that's the place that gets an October stocking this year. I know right now flathead bite is slower than the spawn bite where I fish with my kids and buddies. Good luck and tight lines bud

Question..... do you use the jig heads while bait fishing so the bullheads don't swallow your hook like they would with a plain hook??? Because that's what I do. I have the same jig head on my bullhead rod for 5 years. Probably a couple thousand bullies caught on it. Just re sharpen every month.
