- Saxophonist Mindi Abair has reached that critical juncture. After more than a decade of performing, songwriting and recording, she has taken a step back from the more polished sensibilities of contemporary jazz and embraced the sounds of past decades -- specifically the '60s and early '70s, a period widely regarded as the golden age of R&B, soul and funk. The result is In Hi-Fi Stereo. The album captures the raw and edgy aesthetic of that golden age, when a slab of vinyl could instantaneously put band and listener together in the same room and establish a visceral and enduring connection. Loaded with infectious grooves generated by a high-caliber crew of players, In Hi-Fi Stereo rekindles that spark for a new generation of ears.
She sings, writes, composes and plays multiple instruments, now that's talent. Many of today's 'singers' should take note.

It's truly unreal how great artists like Mindi will always be overlooked due to what is deemed popular music. The problem is that not enough people are subjected to music like this. In my area of upstate NY, our local jazz station was taken off the air. It was replaced by a top 40 station. I always found amazing music on that station and was very disappointed by its demise. All hail the truly talented musicians of the world!

I saw Mindi Abair at Summerfest 2017 in Milwaukee, WI. Man she tore that sax up, playing with the Boneshakers! Funky and bluesy was she and the whole crowd gave her a standing ovation!
I've grown up listening to every kind of music from Jazz, to rock, to classical, to R&B -- you name it. I have listened to all variety of forms of music for over 50 years. Sure, I have my tastes but I also have my ears. I've viewed and listened to three different live Mindi Abair performances, and must say that Mindi Abair is the real deal. For those of you that don't get it, then get out -- and let this great Abair party and her talented musicians go on.
One of most talented Sax jockeys I've ever heard..Right up there or better than Grover and David and Clarence... This woman has Absolute class and an ontime beat like no other.....You ROCK MINDI!!!

mindi just rocks, just cant stop listenng to all her tracks on you tube, such a funky upbeat style to everything she puts her mouth and fingers too, and that is not a euphanism, just truly mindi has soul and it is lovely we are lucky enough to hear it.
I just love this funky jam. Mindi is a fantastic sax player, and definitely not hard on the eyes.
This lady is a great talent and has played with and is praised by some of the best musicians out there!

All I can say is...she's good. I've not heard a smooth jazz sax player this good since I first heard Candy Dulfer more than twenty years ago.

I heard that song back when I was a kid when I listened to 94.7 KSSJ Sacramento's Smooth Jazz along with the song called Lucy's. I miss that station. I hope to run my own radio station called KEDJN El Dorado's Smooth Jazz and New Age station.

I checked out Ms Abair in Cleveland with Dave Koz and Rick Braun. She TRULY stole the show. Her energy in performance is as good as her chops.

@iamthesaxmaster the solo you think she's trying to fake is being played by the keybord guy at the background, she's using a microKORG vocoder and synthesizer to put the background effects, so yes, she's actually playing the keyboard but not the solo. That microKorg sends effects and midi signals it may start sequences and many other things.

You are so right :) Expacialy in Swing Jazz etc there are so much Shortminded people.. they dont listen to music.. they analyze it. Its ok if they dont like it.. me dont like a lot also but they hate it cause of the wrong intentions. They are poor and never will have the feelings people like me will have.. i listen with my Body not with my Brain.

Damn what kind of Sax is that? An alto/soprano? What a great player!
I am not sure, but I think it is some kind of electrified straight alto. I know that when I was playing sax in a rock group, I played tenor and alto, but stayed away from the soprano. Unless you spend a LOT of money on a good soprano, it can be very hard to keep it all in tune up and down the range of the instrument. I played a curved soprano for a short time a long time ago, it played ok, but I was never sold on it. I am a tenor guy. I played the alto as a favor to the guitar player in the band. He had a couple of songs he wanted the alto sound on.

The music scene in El Lay has been the hype, how to sell your music onstage through visuals (not sound) with all the sexy female outfits, wriggling, bending and all that pretentiousness. It's a 'style' of playing to get the audience involved emotionally as the music can't do it alone. Amazing how Kenny G, Dave Koz, this chick are watered down versions of the true pioneers of smooth jazz (better known as r&b) Grover Washington, Sanborn and Hank Crawford. They didn't have to dance on stage.
