Cycle Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain

We had a super family day out in Bilbao recently, parking well away from the centre and exploring the city by bike. And what a lovely city! Just a feast for all the senses in every direction, and with that very distinctive Basque culture and identity.
Making these films allows me to continue exploring the city even after I’ve left it. Researching Basque music I came across Juan de Arriaga, “The Spanish Mozart”. He only lived for nineteen years, but left us some gorgeous music. With all musicians that die young, from Mozart himself, to Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix, you are left wondering what music they would have made had they lived for longer. I love this stately motet, “O Salutaris”. The ending is exquisite. I sometimes think Mozart’s gentle endings are like putting a beloved child to bed, lingering and tender. And this piece is very much in that mould.
