    I remember that night and was praying for her. It was definitely a mental breakdown. I also was thinking of her well-being and her career. So glad she is using her platform for awareness and clarification. Not that she owes that to anyone.

    It took tremendous courage for Alicia to come on the show and speak so openly. It shows that she has a beautiful heart and deep desire to help others. What she experienced could happen to any one of us. A 5-day work week, 9 hours per day, contributes to poor mental health. Until we change that narrative, we will continue to struggle with our mental health. There is talk of cutting that down to a 4-day work week 6 hours per day which includes paid 1-hour lunch. Businesses are becoming more computerized, so this is entirely possible. Unfortunately, I just retired so I will not reap the benefits of this new way of living.

    A similar thing happened to me 8 years ago. I had a panic attack while with my husband camping in the woods. My husband drove me to a small town hospital. The doctor on duty was do rude to me I could not believe it. They didn't take me serious. He was argumentative with me. Rather than doing an EKG he was arguing with me. My husband at the time was parking the car so he couldn't see or hear how rude the guy was. He was downplaying what was happening . Never took blood work or anything like that. The nurse hooked me up to the EKG. The doctor noticed my heart rate was higher than normal yet he still did not take the necessary next steps to find out what was really going on. They always want to dismiss us or lock us up. The doctor sent me home with some pills to help me sleep which I never took because I didn't trust him. Panic attacks are real, don't assume we are all crazy or on something just do the job you went to school for, to help everyone.

    It can truly be a devastating thing to happen. June of this year I had a bad panic attack which caused me to pass out. It turns out HBP and stress has been the culprit. I am working on self-care now. I am glad to see that I am not the only professional that this happened to.🙏🏾💚🙏🏾

    Thank you, Tamron and Alicia! A similar thing happened to me. It started with panic attacks that went on for a few weeks. A friend stayed with me. The panic attacks went away, but I still was not feeling like my typical self. I was still under a tremendous amount of stress working for a big corporation, as well as family stress. Too much. I finally had a full-on breakdown, tried to take my life, and ended up in the hospital by force. My family called 911. My sister unlocked the door to my apartment, and police and firemen descended upon my room, at least 5 big guys. Some states, even if you're calm and you ask for help, a sheriff is sent to take you to a hospital, you will get chained down in some states, not all. I was not given food. Not one nurse or doctor came in the room. I was in the ER and I was ignoree. It does not matter, race, creed or color, the mental health system is broken. It is terrible what happened to Alicia and what happens to all mental health patients. If you ever feel off, please take care of yourself. If you feel even a little off, I ask everyone, men and women, talk to a counselor. It is not weak. Sometimes we just need an objective person to talk to us. Blessing to Alicia for telling her story. ❤❤ There is nothing wrong with you. P.s every hospital has a "psych ward" so I don't know why they did not go down to talk to her and sent her away. Typical.

The challenges of returning to the same type of work, now coupled with the responsibilities of raising very young twins, can be very stressful. I also know what panic attacks are like. Thank you Tamron for bringing this to the public. I’ve been on LCSW in the state of California for the last 21 years. Los Angeles.
    County has a system of care. The client , family friends and even the police can call the Access center. A team will be dispatched, two licensed mental health professionals. The mental health therapist will make an assessment. The team is called, PMRT, psychiatric mobile response team. The therapist makes a decision to place someone on a 5150. We arrange hospitalization and transportation.
    the increase in demand has been stifling to this service however until a better service is created this is the best service I have ever seen.
    Thank you Alicia for your Streisand courage. My condolences 🙏🏾

    A year and a half ago my 25 year old daughter had a mental health crisis. We tried to call the mental health crisis response team but they sent out 2 males who insisted that my daughter had to travel ALONE with them to a psych hospital. I refused to let her go. On another occasion, an EMT threatened to press charges against my daughter when she panicked in the ambulance and hit the EMT. Again, she was made to travel alone with strangers. The charges were dropped but this was the information they shared with me as soon as i met them at the hospital! Our mental health response system is BROKEN and 988 is a joke! 😢

    Lord have mercy. This should NOT have been handled this way. Mental illness is real, and how the hospital did not know the symptoms especially since friends were on the scene. A concerned police would have made sure that she had shoes & clothes. She was not a criminal on the run.😢 this story needs to go viral so that all will learn.

    Unfortunately too late so many people goes through this. My husband’s friend’s father was killed by the police in his own home. Unarmed. A senior citizen, he called 911 to get help because the police was there demanding he let them in. I mean I’m sorry but we’re being very nice in saying police need training on how to deal with the mentally ill. Well one thing that is common sense. Someone in duress should not be treated like a criminal nor be killed especially when they’re not endangering anyone else. Like if it was them or there loved one you not have to teach them the difference from a criminal to a persons having a break down. Back in the day we would call the pastor & then a psychiatrist, or your local mental hospital. If late at night family or friends would stay with that e person. We never thought to call the police🤷🏽‍♀️because in our minds they were only for crimes.

    Honestly, I don’t think the police did anything wrong considering that mental health is unpredictable and they didn’t know if she’s suicidal. Although I don’t have the full picture and I wasn’t there. You don’t get shoes when someone is potentially suicidal. Each situation is different so there isn’t any cookie cutter response but more of a guideline. They can’t give special treatment due to celebrity. There is just too much information missing here. I think she’s saving her career for the most part

    • @CagedbirdFree
      @CagedbirdFree 10 месяцев назад

      First of all, there should have been a Crisis team that consist of mental health therapist and the police. You dont need the full story to know that police are not equipped to assess a mental health crisis. Also, a pregnant woman being chained to a bed with no water or food is inhumane. The only information that is missing is JUSTICE. The police system in America needs a complete overhaul. There are cities that recognize this and are creating Crisis teams to include mental health therapist. In this case, the police mishandled the situation because they were not equipped or trained. She should not have been sent to jail but a hospital for a mental health observation and assessment.
      Approx 10 yrs ago, a relative had a mental health crisis. The landlord called and informed us. The white landlord had trepidation on contacting the police due to "police brutality against black and brown people". She knew my relative as a kind compassionate soul that kept their apt extremely clean. Yet, in a crisis my relative became fearful that someone was trying to kill them. They became a recluse and beginning signs of a hoarder. I contacted my circle of therapist friends, and they told us to request a mental health therapist with the police. We were able to get help without my relative in handcuffs. They were taken to a mental health facility for observation NOT jail. We are forever grateful to the landlord that wanted to ensure our relative received the support for mental health not be treated as a criminal or even killed.
      So, these are things to consider when a loved one is having a mental health crisis regardless of "celebrity" status. Also, in mental health facilities, patients are provided with a care package clothes, socks, and toiletries. She would've been shown compassion with simply being provided socks for her bare feet. This isn't "special treatment" but Compassion.
