The second guy is definitely too critical of himself, the hack captures the EXACT humor of Rub Rabbits. The smile i had was from ear to ear seeing such an old and somewhat obscure title captured in such a charming and funny way in this comp

Given how good that first hack looked from a graphics standpoint, it makes me REALLY want to see a romhack competition focused solely on aesthetics. I wonder how crazy it can get given the new wave of assembly-based modders.
these hacks are all made in decomp, which means no assembly is necessary for custom code. decomp's been the reason there are so many new hacks with custom mechanics - because now you can just use C code.

Aesthetics/vibe ROM hack competition would be sick. There's tons of directions you could take it in and still be on theme
I want McDonald competition.
The guy that made that first hack knows a thing or two about game design. Each new mechanic was introduced very simply, built on top of for a while, and then switched to a new mechanic. Built that up simply and then started throwing in stuff from the last section. By the end the player is flying through complex setups. It’s rare to see pacing that strong in a game jam
I don't know why that guy in the second hack was so hard on himself for the cutscenes, that shit was charming and straight-to-point with the humor.

I feel like a lot of these hacks deserve a 10 as fuck rating it's gonna be hard to find a winner
IKR, that's the hardest issue with such a broad hack theme. All of the themes in and of themselves are ace, and adding on the amazing execution it becomes so hard to pick a definitive "best" hack
idk man, that evangelion hack had its own custom intro, custom boss fights, and custom cutscenes, that seems like a good choice for the winner
or maybe mario vs wario ware, i played it and it was fun af, mini-games in mario

@@minty-fresh yeah that's not a bad guess at all. Their song Hyalcon and On and On or whatever it's called has a very different atmosphere/vibe to this though... You're probably right though and they have probably have other, moodier songs than that one that I just haven't heard before...
I think the creator said it was "crossing over" between the different sides of the screen when people asked during the stream.

The Rub Rabbits hack was another really good minigames hack, it messed with your mind in fun ways with all of the curveballs it could throw.
