This sort of thing will gradually become invaluable over the next 50 years as a document of the times. I love discovering prosaic footage like this of my hometown of Hobart, regardless of which era it's from - thanks for sharing. :)
Loved it. I felt a bit woozy watching it when the car was moving. What a difference it was to see so little traffic on the roads on Christmas Day, here in Sydney traffic is just awful. I knew every Street where you were driving. I was born in Hobart and was down in July 2014, can't wait to come back soon. Thanks again for the great video.
used to live there and drive them streets, brought tears to see it all again and the memories..makes me want to go back even more now.. thanks for the vid.. excellent.
Of course it's quiet. Xmas is a public holiday, stores are shut, schools too. Everybody is at home enjoying Xmas dinner and present giving. Suburban beaches are thronged. You should see it on a working week day, busy, busy. Saturday market at Salamanca is a hoot, thousands of people, hundreds of stalls. Everything you could want to eat or buy!
I felt the same. Got out of here, went overseas then to Victoria. I moved back here and it's grown on me again. I have a job here in my expertise and am really happy. Melbourne or Sydney or even overseas is only a few hours flight away and affordable.
senhuan My family moved away about 1-2 years ago. The beauty about Tassie is that it's always there waiting for you. It doesn't change like the bigger cities do. A lot of people in the other states joke that it's 15 years behind the rest of the world, but that's just the way we like it.
Tom Menzie So nothing ever changes in Hobart? 1:24 - two new 11+ storey hotels approved for Myer store site and the block past it. First one only just approved, second one construction to start soon. 3:34 - a block to the left here, a new Uni student accommodation building - 14 storeys - construction started this week. Also straight ahead you can see evidence of construction of the 11 storey Vodafone Central car park and office building which was completed late 2014. 5:21 - on the site that burned down: currently under construction is the Icon Complex - is currently a 14 storey commercial/retail (rebuild the old Myer store) plus a hotel building on top! 8:02 - the entire block to the right between Davey St and Parliament House is being redeveloped into "Parliament Square", an open plaza, park and a series of smaller commercial and office buildings. 8:30 - the two small buildings immediately in front have been demolished and replaced with a four level floating building Brooke Street Pier - which is now the main tourist ferry terminal, also has a bunch of other tourist focused stores. 8:45 - ground floor of the Marine Board Building has been redeveloped into three new restaurants 9:30 - the shed to the right has been demolished and a 5-star hotel (MW1) is being built in this location, very similar shape to the current shed, but raised a level higher. The ground floor will be open to the public with cafes/restuarants. 10:19 - you can see at the "02" which is now Hobart's cruise ship terminal - completed the year before this video I think. Also used for concerts and events! 10:35 - 10:55 - the entire right hand side of this area is part of Macquarie Point, which recently had a master plan announced for redevelopment over the next 10 years. 14:05 - you can see the IMAS (Institute of Marine and Antarctic Science) building here to the left, looks like it was just being completed at the time of this video!
Charles Gregory I was over there for a visit when you sent the reply and I did notice the renovations on the cathedral. I also saw the Mona Roma terminal and I noticed the work you mentioned them doing on the site of Myers. Its great to see old Hobart Town developing and growing, however fundamentally, the spirit of Hobart hasn't changed for 100s of years, and that's what i like about it. They treasure their heritage and historic buildings instead of turning into a stereotypical metropolis that looks much like every other big city. By the way, along with Rome and Rio de Janeiro it is one of three cities build on 7 hills.
@@tommenzie2458 The truth is, that the whole Australia is 50 years behind the world, especially Europe. As an European, I lived there for two years, and I couldn't wait to come back to Europe. Australia is beautiful, but here the history, architecture, the sparkling culture is fantastic. I feel AU is out of the world blood circulation, very isolated, and left behind.
Nice drive through Hobart. You went past my now deceased grandparents' house in Princes Street, and past my old school Hutchins. Almost 30 years later the memories flood back. The great thing about Hobart is that there is a new building here and there, but it never really changes.
Brilliant video ! Glad to see my old hometown of Hobart! Its so good to see hardly any traffic and it is such a beautiful day also! People here on the mainland have no idea what theyre missing out on. Good lets keep it that way!
Fantastic place, thanks for sharing. My family went there in June this year for a week & we can't wait to get back. My sister moved to Bellerive 4yrs ago & I can see why she loves it. I'd move there tomorrow if I could get work.
senhuan Can I ask you for your opinion. I haven't decided which place in Tassie to move to, but don't want to live in the big cities. Can you suggest a nice place on the north coast, near Launceston?
G'day. Launceston in itself is quite a peaceful town (although some recent crime sprees make it not seem so). Devonport is the port city, so depending on what you want to do for a living maybe try there. If you want REALLY quiet towns, go to the East coast of Tasmania. Very isolated.
Yes, it's long but not boring. What do people expect from a dash cam video, the second coming, aliens blocking the road, or a pleasant drive through lovely Hobart. It was good. I enjoyed it.
senhuan Hi, I'm a student from Singapore, due to start law school in UTAS either on June 22 or from the Feb intake. I'd like to ask if you think Tassie is a good city for students to live in? Is it very expensive? Also, after the initial period of staying in hostel, i'd like to rent a place outside instead, so that my mom can come and stay with me. Which part would you recommend? Thanks!!

enjoyed the drive. I honestly do not think i could drive there seeing as its on the other side of the road lol. Cheers and thanks from British Columbia
I know it was Christmas Day but wow, the traffic is terrible now! It hasn't been that quiet round here for years, well, except maybe during lockdown, lol.
I wouldn't call it boring either. Although I have nothing against the soundtrack, I think I would have rather listened to a local radio station during this tour. At any rate, thanks for the view of Hobart.
Nah, most of it is pure Russian pop music. Exactly what I was dreaming to escape by moving to Australia until I saw this vid. Those two instrumental tracks in the middle of the video are great though!
Hi there. There is a bus system. We used to have trams about 100 years ago but those got discontinued. Pretty much buses and taxis now. Although they do plan on making a new tram line to North Hobart (where the restaurants are). It's still undecided. The bus system is alright.
senhuan Hahaha, yes, I know. I was just trying to show that I like your city and love Australia! You should also see the good side of life there! Big hug, friend! :-)
Lol of coarse it would be a empty road it's Christmas tassie is like that when it's Christmas they I've go to the beach or stay home and have dinner well that's what I do stay home and have dinner

35 years later, I have my own children and can't wait to go back!

Shilpa Uparkar :)
This is definitely one of my all time favourite videos. Love the music also. My family and I visited Hobart back in January 2004. Thanks for sharing.
Already things have changed since 2013 - there are cycle lanes on Sandy bay Road now!
Fantastic place, thanks for sharing. My family went there in June this year for a week & we can't wait to get back. My sister moved to Bellerive 4yrs ago & I can see why she loves it. I'd move there tomorrow if I could get work.
Yeah a great place to live if you have work.
So beautiful city! Wish go live there, and be your friend of course! Salamanca Place seems a cool place to go with family! :-)
FANTASTIC VIDEO AND EXCELLENT CHOICE OF MUSIC.THANKS FOR SHARING.

Thanks!
Amazing video! I was teleported! I ran this on the big screen. What an idea to do this video! Thanks! It was fun to watch!
Thanks, mate! :)
Thank you for sharing. I am planning to move to Tasmania in the next couple of years, so I enjoyed looking at the shops in Hobart.
No worries, mate. I plan to do a similar video this year.

Amazing how much it has changed in the last 6 years, and not for the better either 😪
This is one of my favourite videos. Hobart is a great place. My family and I had a holiday there in early 2004.

Thanks for "A drive in Hobart"... It's a very good idea ! Best wishes from France (Toulon - Côte d'Azur).

+IuanColeYoung Blackmans bay and Kingston are nice. Sandy Bay is also very nice and has a lot of foreign students living there.
+IuanColeYoung Sorry for super-late reply. I hope you are doing well over here, mate.

Woo hoo! The music's back on! BTW, loving our stay in Hobart atm. Flying home again very soon. Boo.
Thanks, mate! Glad you enjoyed Hobart.
Petrol $1.59 ! Bloody hell I don't recall ever paying that much in NSW.
Peter Stone I bet you do now but hey!!
makes me wanna visit... seems very laid back
I know it was Christmas Day but wow, the traffic is terrible now! It hasn't been that quiet round here for years, well, except maybe during lockdown, lol.

Thanks! Actually the radio is playing a news channel, but you can barely hear it over the music.
Where are all the fire hydrants in that town? I did not see one fire hydrant in this long video. How do they put a fire out?
They are mostly in the ground. Or in walls/ cupboards. Some city areas have ones that come out of the ground.
We haven't discovered fire in Hobart yet :)
Music Islife really? How about Myer of liverpool st and the building of Bathurst st
I lived in Hobart for 1 year beautiful place !!
Hobart seems to have more speed bumps than pot holes! Not sure which I would prefer.
I loved it.
Could you tell me which language that your songs are please? I am guessing eastern European, possibly Polish or Hungarian.
Nuts! The music was great! What was the artist's name? Thanks.
Yeah lol a pity. I might try to re-upload it :) It was a mix of artists.
Nah, most of it is pure Russian pop music. Exactly what I was dreaming to escape by moving to Australia until I saw this vid. Those two instrumental tracks in the middle of the video are great though!
I like your city.
Nice job! I loved taking a drive through Hobart! I'm riding shotgun with my arm out the window with my shades on! I watched the whole thing!
Thanks!
We moved away on the Spirit. This video was taken the day after we left. It's like a beautiful time capsule preserving it just the way we left it.
How I love Tasmania! I want to migrate to Australia!
Why?
Hobart is a great place to live. Love Battery Point.
aren't there any busses??......or any kind of local transport system??
Hi there. There is a bus system. We used to have trams about 100 years ago but those got discontinued. Pretty much buses and taxis now. Although they do plan on making a new tram line to North Hobart (where the restaurants are). It's still undecided. The bus system is alright.
Sucheet Karki not on Christmas day, everything is dead quiet
+senhuan , what language on that music.

Aaron C Holden is at 1:12
jaja llegue a este vídeo por una nota de Internet . Acabo de descubrir esta localidad y me ah gustado
That looks like an awesome place to live! Is it unbearably cold in the winter?
Not as cold as many believe.
no it's about 14 degrees centigrade in average
Lovely today. My home town 😊
Love, love, love Tassie! x
Driving from Melbourne to Hobart is extremely challenging
Especially driving across Bass Straight lol
this video helps with home sickness haha

CAN U TELL ME NAME OF THE SONG AT 3.46?
Анжелина Начесова. "Задыхаюсь"
I live in tassie
not bad :)
charming city
спасибо за экскурсию. красиво. но почему безлюдно?
alexbratok1 You are welcome. There are no people because it's a small town on a relatively small island at the end of the world.
+senhuan End of the world!? End of the world is live in a ''Hue Hue'', country of corruption, also know like ''Brazil'', my country...
Chemistry Atomistic huehue... I meant end of the world geographically :)
senhuan Hahaha, yes, I know. I was just trying to show that I like your city and love Australia! You should also see the good side of life there! Big hug, friend! :-)
Chemistry Atomistic Big hug :)
Lol of coarse it would be a empty road it's Christmas tassie is like that when it's Christmas they I've go to the beach or stay home and have dinner well that's what I do stay home and have dinner
