Is it correct that my 600 model is using a 32K ohm Thermistor as temperature sensor? (I measured at 0C/32F in ice water) I need to select the correct wire for a long run to the outdoors location.
Thank you for contacting AprilAire! Our outdoor sensors are Type 2, 10k ohm thermistors. Typically we recommend standard thermostat wire for the wiring, and to avoid running along high voltage lines. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us at 800.334.6011 Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CT.
How do you stop or prevent the mold growth that happens when this runs. I need to remove mine altogether, everything. I have mold exposure and very ill.
I am looking to use one of these units to replace a now troublesome Honeywell unit (He220). Is the hole size in the duct similar or will I be plugging up a gap somewhere?
How would I install one of these if I have forced air through slab ducts in the floor? I have a combo heat pump and A/C with condenser sitting directly on supply to the ducts. Aux gas heat sits on top, some plenum space above the aux furnace.
Thank you for contacting AprilAire. AprilAire Models 400, 500, and 600 can be mounted on either the hot air supply side plenum, or the return side of the system. They simply need to be able to run the 6” bypass duct from one side to the other. We do not necessarily recommend the 400 in heat pump applications, as it relies on hot air from the system and heat pumps do not have the same high end temps as a heat/cool system. If you have any additional questions, we would be happy to assist.
Why isn't he attaching that to the return duct, as it is generally considered more efficient to heat humid air, instead of heating dry air then humidifying it?
The heat from the supply air is more effective for controlling humidity than the cooler air returning to the system. For assistance, please contact our technical support team at 800.334.6011.
Thank you for contacting AprilAire and for your question! This works just fine as well. We include a diagram for that case in the instructions. Please visit rp.widen.net/content/jyc1j3awxl/pdf/aprilaire-400-series-humidifier-installation-template-B2205115.pdf?u=5rn8it for additional information.

Mine is mounted in the return with bypass connected to the supply. Looks like because there isn't room for it above the A coil. Is this incorrect? How to fix?
Thank you for contacting AprilAire. You are fine to install it this way. Hot air will be pulled through the bypass duct from the supply side either way. If you have any additional questions, we would be happy to assist.
Question. I have the 600 series. A heating/cooling company installed it 10 days ago. I have the humidity level set on a 5. 10 days later our level is only reading a 21%. It hasn't gone above 30%. They have the water tube set at a slow drip. I've seen other videos where theirs is at a slow stream? Would this help increase the level quicker? They said it would only take two weeks to reach the level but with only 4 days until the two week mark, I don't see it going up 29 more degrees? What should I do? Thanks!
Thank you for contacting AprilAire. We recommend just leaving the water valve fully open, as the orifice in the feed tube of the humidifier will regulate that water flow either way. To maximize efficiency, we recommend making sure the unit is connected to hot water. Please feel free to call our technical support line at 1-800-334-6011 for further troubleshooting, if needed.
Can I install humidifier on return duct and the 6inch pipe above the furnace and coil on the plenum area? I dont have enough space on plenum above coils, it's only 8 inch high and 16 inch wide. Please help. I have Aprilaire 500

Hi George - Thank you for contacting Aprilaire. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. The black and white wires go to a 120V circuit. The two red wires would get attached to the terminal posts on top of the transformer pictured at the time stamp you’ve identified. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-334-6011. A technical support specialist can be reached Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CT.
I noticed my 400 has two white wires which seem to come from the bottom of humidifier were connected along with the solenoid wires and 24VAC wires. I'm guessing this has something to do with closing the solenoid if there is too much water in the humidifier. But I think the two plastic pieces the wires connect to at the bottom of my unit are broken and it was closing the circult all the time so no water was getting in. Is there a replacement part of this assembly?

Thank you for contacting AprilAire! We have the bypass line on the models 400, 500, and 600 humidifiers to allow the air to go through the water panel to add humidity to the home. While the air is moving through the ducts it will follow the path of least resistance. Due to this, without the bypass line going from the humidifier to the return duct, the moving air would not go through the water panel to evaporate water. If you have any additional questions, we would be happy to assist.
Thank you for contacting Aprilaire! The Model 500 and 500M can be installed on either the supply plenum or cold air return of a forced air handling system with right hand or left hand bypass duct connections. The humidifier dimensions and serviceability must be considered when selecting the best location. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us at support@aprilaire.com or by calling 1-800-334-6011.
As an HVAC business owner, I think there is an argument for mounting position depending on each install individually. Sometimes you can be better on one setup and the next the opposite. In an ideal world, I put the unit on the supply line and the hose back to the return line as they did in the video. It also depends on if you will use the humidistat or your own directly to your Thermostat (if it is smart and you can get to the wiring.)
Hi Jay - Thank you for contacting Aprilaire! That video is useless, wiring it that way will run the humidifier even when the fan isn't on. This is another "just do it how the manufacturer tells you to" videos
No, you guys are both wrong lol, the diagram is correct. He showed how to wire up the 24v with the transformer on the left side. Then on the right where it showed a wiring diagram, that’s for the low voltage connections to make the humidistat work. Keep in mind these humidistats have a “run with fan” option but it’s a switch behind the cover. I install full systems everyday as a lead. Nothing was wrong about what this guy said y’all just don’t know how things work.
You’re probably only used to basic humidistats. The model 60 is newer and it does require all the wiring that is displayed in the video. You can replace the transformer with “W” and “C” on your furnace board. These humidistats are a pain to install unfortunately.
That's why the thermostat G goes to humidistat, and humidistat Gf goes to the furnace. The humidistat will run the fan without the furnace to reach desired humidity. Higher humidity will make the house "feel" warmer, and thus lower your energy bill even if the fan runs more. The fan uses the least amount of energy of all the components in your HVAC system.
Power to the humidifier transformer primary winding will be provided by a terminal labeled as HUM on the 120volt side of the furnace wiring schematic. This terminal is only powered on a call for heat regardless if the humidistat is calling or not. This ensures humidity only occurs on a call for heat.
👎Aprilaire central humidifiers have been a huge disappointment. From the beginning, they’ve had constant leaks, including problems with the pipes, and the auto-on-off mechanism doesn’t work properly, causing continuous water leakage. The filter is always covered in a white, powdery residue that appears to be chemicals, raising serious concerns about air quality. The company’s lack of innovation is evident, as they haven’t made any meaningful design improvements in years. The humidity sensing is also unreliable; it often over-humidifies the house or drops to lower settings, such as 6, 5, or even 4. Sometimes, it doesn’t humidify enough, requiring constant manual adjustments. All of this happened despite being professionally installed. An absolute piece of garbage-I do not recommend this company or product at all.
Thank you for contacting AprilAire. We would love to speak with you further regarding the issues you are having. Have you reached out to our technical support team regarding these issues?
Yes, I still feel the same way. The quality of the design and product is absolutely subpar. Many companies choose to cut costs by outsourcing to East Asia, which ends up harming their long-term business growth. While it might seem like a smart short-term strategy, it’s ultimately a foolish decision driven by excessive greed. In the water flow industry, leaking is completely unacceptable. It either shows a lack of capability in designing a leak-free system or, frankly, a lack of concern. It’s only a matter of time before another competitor steps in and takes over.
