    Diagnostic charge should be the hourly rate, if you spend 2 hours doing diagnostics/Fault Finding you charge the time, the outcome is irrelevant (you may be able to fix or the fix has to be decided by customer, might be costly). (it's also irrelevant whether you use or do not use a"diagnostic scanner", diagnostics can be done with a DMM and test light)), Further if you are investing in new technology you have to pay for that as a business or individual, so to me this cost should also be embedded in the hourly rate. (Diag/Fault finding + technology and training costs). If a shop or individual mech wants to play customer politics with this then fine.
    However what I do object to is a shop where they "slap on" a scanner , tell you the fault description and do nothing else but charge £50 for the pleasure of connecting a scanner. keep up the great vids.

    Before i became a mechanic, my lb7 duramax had the notorious injector failure, and i took it to 2 independent shops and they could not figure out what was wrong with it. I then took it to our local chevy dealership (my now current employer lol) and they diagnosed it as injector failure. They quoted me way more than i could afford for the repair, but i was happy to pay the $90 just to know what was wrong with it. I ended up fixing it at my house, but now that i work there i completely understand the importance of diagnostic fees. Great video btw!

    When I hear people say they shouldn't have to pay for diagnosis it makes me laugh, I wonder if the same people expect to get paid when they go to work.
    Repair shops aren't forcing anyone to pay for diagnosis, you are free to decline if you do not agree with the charges and go to another facility that works for free or repair it yourself.

    Great video thanks brother. Just had this discussion with my son. I called the local dealer to discuss my third brake light. I bought the truck new little over 4 years ago . The light housing and everything has been changed twice by them. Keeps getting water inside the housing. They were going to charge me a diag fee. We talked about it for a few minutes and I decided not going to do it. I am a retired heavy equipment mechanic. I upgraded the light and I also got the better gasket from what they put on. When I put the new one in I also put a gasket on the screw. I would not have had a problem with paying them if it was a major issue. I have no idea how to work on the new vehicles other than to service my truck. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother.

    At my shop, We charge a diag fee for just about everything. As a business owner, this is how I look at it. When you come in with a check engine light or diag of some sort, That is usually requiring my highest paid A tech. Its also requiring the most expensive equipment in the shock (We have factory scan tools and testing equipment) So with all that, you have to charge. Now, if we are doing a window motor, obviously there is some overlap there, and we compensate the estimate for that. At the end of the day, my guys are paid well, we have the correct tools, and equipment and a nice, clean shop.
    Dont want to pay for a correct, accurate diagnostics, we are totally fine with that and agree we are not a fit for all the people out there.

    Awesome video! I thought you explained the various scenarios for labor charges. The shop I work at usually will do an hour of diag & waive it if the work is done. Complex diagnoses that require over an hour get billed as such. We are an independent shop & us techs are not flat rate, so no diag time arguments. Our system works for the boss & us techs.

    As a small used car dealership we will charge a diag fee. If the customer agrees to repair the issue, we'll credit a partial amount. If they don't, they pay the full amount. But we are generally very lenient to our loyal customers. Great explanation. I was thinking of doing a similar one on my channel.

    Great video and another case in point we have to deal with in our trade. Being I work at a small independant shop I'm also my own service advisor as well as the tech so dealing with this issue isn't uncommon. The best example I give customers is when you have an issue at home with the boiler and call a heating engineer out does he charge you a call out/diagnostic fee? They reply well yes of course. To which the conversation usually ends there cos I reply well whats the difference between us diagnosing your car and the heating engineer diagnosing your boiler?
    As the video highlights people still dont respect what is involved in diagnosing cars especially these days, its not like back in the day when you could fix a car with a tweek of screwdriver on the carbs.

    Spent 5 days to find a short in 01 rav4 that keep EF13 fuse blowing as soon as u turn a key plus P100 & P505 showed up at the same time so I took the car to dealer for $190 diagnostic fees then an hr later svc advisor called that they need more extensive search & have to check all cabin wiring & charged me with 4 fuses cost $6+ each plus tax & came out $852 so that's 4x from the $190 diagnostics flat fees. Then all they came out with is to replace the engine wiring harness $1500 with labor out the door is $5,200+, so I just paid the $852 & towed the car home. I already know it's a wiring issues in the begin with but they couldn't tell me that except recommended to replace the whole wiring..

  • @joetrrs
    @joetrrs 5 лет назад +2

    I wish this was true for every shop...I paid for a diag on my car a while back and they told me it was the fuel pressure regulator and ignition control module, and I asked them specifically "Are you sure that's the issue?" which they said yes, that they would replace them both for me for $650 and id be back on the road, no problem. So instead, I replaced both myself and that wasn't the issue. It was the coil packs...oh, add to that the fact that they broke the vacuum hose from my evap to my throttle body and pretended they didnt know why it wouldnt start back up at their shop...even tho they managed to start it, in order to park it outside, for me to pick up. I popped the hood and the guy ran to the engine and said "oh they forgot to put the lines back on, that's why!" so then...how did they manage to start the car and park outside if the car wouldn't start without the line on? Not saying you or the majority of shops do shady crap like this, but my experience with the few shops ive dealt with have been complete hacks. Which is why I work on my car myself now.
    Also, sorry for the long comment, this topic just definitely connected with the issues ive dealt with before.

    Sometimes diagnostic fees go too far, like charging a $190 diagnostic fee for a burnt out low beam headlight. I only got a quote because my truck can take about an hour to replace each one, because it’s a pain and you need to remove the grill and the light assembly. But to charge a diagnostic on a common maintenance thing like that is ridiculous. Upcharging the part and the labor teplacement time is fine.

    Thank you for explanation. My question is if you take your vehicle in for a diagnostic, will any other problems show up other than what the stated problem may be? As an example, I have been told the car is burning oil and I hear a tapping. Two years ago, there was an issue the spark plug #1 and was told needed to have all changes as well as solenoids. Would that show up on the diagnostic?

When thag happens I hit then well I would be glade to replace what ever you want me to replace but when it doesn’t fix it you still have to pay. Then it will be xxx.xx to diagnose plus what ever repairs you need to fix the issue at that point they kinda change there mind about us diagnosing the vehicle for them. Perfect example was today lady comes in with p0301 cyl 1 misfire told me it was the coil because autozone told her that. Well well it wasn’t a coil at all it was 4 tappets 2 rockers. So that’s the reason why we charge to diagnose. Writing this all before I watched the video to if you mentioned the exact same thing I’m saying

    I think what's confusing is that shops charge labour so you expect to pay that and parts /consumables. But becaue most shops don't tell you up front there is a diagnostic fee it comes as a surprise. That's the first thing (they need to be more up front about the fees). Kudos to the ones that do this already.
    The second this is that it's confusing to say that you need to charge a diagnostic fee or for use of the equipment. That only applies to some situations. You don't charge the customer a wrench fee or a torch fee. Furthermore if feels like double dipping to be charged labour and diagnostic fee.

    • @Carlitosway211

    I definitely agree that it takes money to keep the light on for any business. The problem starts when they spend maybe 30 min "diagnosing" a vehicle and they charge for 2 hours at the hourly rate of a plastic surgeon. Often times, the stealership will say that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle and that they cannot reproduce the issue, so you have to look forward to spending the same money again when you come back for the same problem or spend more money once the problem gets a lot worse.

    I work at a dealership in Canada. Wont mention brand name but have swapped multiple 3.0 Turbo Diesels in half tons so that should be a good hint. The manufacturer has made it very clear they will not pay the technician diag time, claiming the Labor OP has Testing said component included. For example, Car came in multiple times for MIL evap code. AFter 3 techs and 2 dealerships had a go i got it, spent an hour but found FTP port on fuel pump not punched through causing no reading to the sensor. So after all that, i get 1.3 to diag and replace the faulty part, essentially losing an hour. Whats your experience with warranty pay, honestly have a very sour taste for my current manufacturer and thinking of switching brands.

    • @RustbeltMechanic
      @RustbeltMechanic  5 лет назад

      I totally understand that way you are feeling right now. And you doing that kind of diag without being paid is not good. It also sounds like you don’t have a very good or knowledgeable warranty admin. There are labor ops for diag time with correct documentation and clock time. Usually up to
      .9hrs is easily obtainable without preauth but anything over that is a bit tricky and harder to get....but not impossible.

    • @MrBrownCanadian
      @MrBrownCanadian 5 лет назад

      @@RustbeltMechanic Appreciate the reply! As for warranty admin, my dealership doesnt even have one at the momen. I usually dont have trouble getting diag time as long as i dont replace any parts such as a wiring repair or something like that. Its sad the manufacturer sees technicians this way. The auditor basically told our SM that if a part is changed the diagnostic time is built into the lop, which would be ok if things failed the same way all the time, but with new technologies in cars and so many modules, i dont see how they are able to claim all the different scenarios are built into 1 "test and replace" LOP. Anyways enough of my ranting, glad i found your channel and look forward to more content!

    Boy it sure looks like the dealership flushed a lot of money on those specialty tools. Most of them are rusty or sitting in boxes that appear to have never been opened.
    Back in the days when I was a car mechanic, we would charge a small diagnostic fee if we actually diagnosed a problem. To me, that meant that I found the problem and provided the customer with the information to fix the problem. That's what they are paying for. Information.
    Some customers would ask us to "read the codes". I would not charge them for that.

      Wes Johnson Services oh yeah totally get that...those tools are rusty because our dealership had a fire 3 years back and all the soot and water from the fire caused this to happen unfortunately. Then as of the last year or so we’ve found the tools store better/easier on the shelves in their shipping boxes. But...you’re also right that many of them are outdated and unused.

      Interesting. I think fires are somewhat common in dealer shops. We had a local GM dealership burn completely to the ground last year. A truck dealership burned down the year before.

    It's our fault, since we need communicate effectively and train our customers of the time and cost associated with the diagnostic process associated for a specific complaint. We need to emphasize the value and benefits they will realize when a thorough and complete diagnostic procedure is exercised. Walk them through the broad strokes of the plan of action and any specialty equipment to be used and the time frame required. Emphasize how important it is to mimic the complaint in order to isolate the cause to verify the repair was successful and parts weren't being installed unnecessarily.
    If the professional standards for Doctors, Lawyers and other white collar professionals are to charge several hundred dollars for an initial consultation or consult fee to simply discuss a plan of action; it should not be unrealistic for our customers to expect to pay our published hourly rate for a specified period of time to perform an actual physical task.
    The trust issues arises from the unknown and uneducated. That is where they feel they are getting "ripped off". This can be accomplished without getting too technical or too detailed for most, where some others may require a bit more in depth details. The beauty of this model is once you identify the suspected cause we can notify the customer and they can get it repaired or not and we still get paid for our time.
    Will we lose out on the repair or have people who balk at the idea of diagnostic fees; Yep! But who wants these customers anyway since they won't be happy even with a satisfactory repair. The ones that decide they can do the repair themselves or have their neighbor do it cheaper now that the problem is identified, that's fine too. It frees up our schedule to move onto the next vehicle and with positive results, that vehicle and customer will most likely return in the future.
    There is higher probability the customer will choose to have us perform the repair out of convenience since the vehicle is already there and on the schedule and transparency builds trust. Repeat customers will be gained that are more likely to accept those high dollar repairs with less skepticism since we have always been transparent, and in their eyes, open, honest & trustworthy.
    If we allow the customer an informed choice and they have full confidence in us and our abilities from past performances we should be able to sell our diagnostic time with minimal effort and make it standard practice. We are the only ones that can change our practice and standards and should do so in a positive manner.

      I wrote the above comment before watching your video which mimics my response! GREAT content and even better philosophy. Communication and Transparency is beneficial and positive for the Industry as a whole. The opposite encourages negative outcomes and breeds poor customer relations.

    I have been luck. When I was at a dealership. I hated to wate for the scanner to be free. After I had it. I got the good old 2500, yes I said 2500. I still have it and use it the odd time with ODB 1 car and some early ODB2 . You nocked rhat out of the park with that. I explain with my customers that have come to me with electrical. I tell them it is strait time. With the explanation it could be just a burnt bulb. To a broke wire. However if I am asked to do a scan. I charge A set fee but when I give them the outcome I tell them that if you have me do the work I will wave the fee. I like when they tell me why do you charge for scans. It cost me alot to buy the tools that are helping me tell you what is wrong with your car. You can go get a $100 code reader that might tell you what is wrong. They have done and did thT lol to call me up to scan the car lol.
    Sorry bit of a rant. Come spring time I need to get my gerage working for me. You and jrc54 have made me want to give RUclips a shot with making videos on here. I love looking for something to find not what you are looking for.

    “Diagnostic fee” seems a bit too non-specific. I don’t mind paying for a diagnosis, but at the shop I used they’ve now slapped a $130 diagnostic fee on every service. That’s $130 it costs you just to make the appointment. The fee should match the time and labor is all I’m saying. And just because other businesses charge flat diag fees doesn’t make it right.

    Rustbelt, any tips or advice on surviving down season? I am new to flat rate as of November and was doing good before Christmas, but now that it's dead season, I'm losing my mind, not only because I'm new to flat rate, but also because there's very little work and any job I get is a first time job so i lose my ass on it :(

      So the first thing I would recommend is to ALWAYS have a savings cushion saved back for slow times. Throughout the summer and better months you need to build up at least 2 or so weeks of pay to offset the tough times. Second bit of advice is “side hustle.” Thanks to your question I’ll likely do a video on this for you and a few others asking the same questions. But there’s more ways to make money...while being at work doing nothing work on other things...training if you’re at a dealership; especially if they pay for it!

  • @eppyz

    My local dealer charges you only if they can't find anything wrong. Thing that pisses me off is the service writer said everything was ok .... Couldn't find anything wrong....well I showed a video and photos of what was happening and he shuns it saying that doesn't matter we have to see it for ourselves. That's BS if it's documented and the vehicle is still under factory warranty. Other thing that upsets me about dealerships.. I make an appointment for 8am I said I will wait, they said it will be a while... I'm like why? My car was first one here? I get a ride home.... they call me at 430pm saying to pick up my truck. What took 8 1/2 hrs? BS.

    • @Broke335i
      @Broke335i 5 лет назад

      Jeff Eppenger if vehicle is under factory we don’t charge diag at all unless I can see physical damage or vehicle has been hit in the area that there is failure. But we do the opposite if we cannot get the condition we do not charge the diagnosis fee.

    • @eppyz
      @eppyz 5 лет назад

      @@Broke335i every dealer basically does what they want. The manufacturers probably don't know what's going on half the time. If they did maybe the service would be better especially if it's documented. In this particular case it was through a Nissan dealership. I ended up going to another dealer and they covered what the other dealer said wasn't covered. All this does is create pissed off customers and that hurts the brand.. any brand. A product is only as good as the people that stand behind it in my book. I guess I'm old school.

    • @phillipwilson6781
      @phillipwilson6781 5 лет назад

      With intermittent problems it makes much harder to diagnose. You can waste a lot of time trying to recreate problem. We charge something but may not be able to duplicate problem.

    • @eppyz
      @eppyz 5 лет назад

      @@phillipwilson6781 I understand that and that is very reasonable to say if it was just the customers word. If there is video proof? Then how can the dealership day it never happened? Or they corny duplicate it? The fact is on video it did whatever it was and was proven? Then the service manager tells you they can't do anything? Makes no sense. In my case it was my truck over heating and after taking it back 3 times they somehow going out my fan clutch was faulty. Stuff like this just shouldnt happen if the dealerships would just listen to their customers and not assume we are all full of BS. Not saying it always happens but I had proof and if they would have just taken the time? Anyway it is what it is.

    Diagnostic fee's are complete BS. You're trying to get a job from a customer, so yes you do have to put upfront time to do that. Would you like to be charged every time a contractor comes to your house to do a quote? No you wouldn't. That contractor is trying to get a job, guess what, mechanics are doing the same thing.

    It’s not right to charge anything if you cannot figure it out. I would charge for example a 125 fee to diagnose any problem. I would get some guys who fixed cars but only wanted me to tell them what was wrong. I cannot stand shops who charge for nothing found. I will tell my customers if you do business with me. I will take of 25 bucks off the diagnose fee. All of my past customers have told me of shops who charge them to look at something and tell them they need more time to look at it and it’s unknown how long it will be. But hey you owe me 100-200 just to look at it. That’s bullshit.
