    Great video, brings me back to Dallas TX where I worked for a Dodge dealership from 1997 - 2004 as a flat rate tech (back in Sweden now). So true about loosing hr when you first start working on flat rate. E.i head gasket on a SOHC Neon paid 4 hr warranty time, first one I did toke me 6.5 hr, after i don't know how many head gaskets i was done to 2.5 hr, by cutting corners on the removal and installation procedures. Year 2000 i actually checked my hr and I ran an average off 56 hr / week over a period of 1 year that I got paid for. We had to be at the shop for 10 hr / day mo - fr but if you deduct the time for finding cars, getting parts, bull shitting with other techs, lunch, test drive etc the average time you actually turned a wrench was not 10 hr / day. Another thing we had at that time was that we got to right done the LOP numbers our self, so no human error except your own. Our shop used only warranty time, if it was customer pay we used warranty time times 1.5 and you got customer time. I could write a small novel about my 7 years as a flat rate tech in Dallas. Thanks for a great channel, keep up the good work.

    I know how it feels on both sides of the issue. As the customer and the tech. As a customer I can certainly appreciate a mechanic who is honest. Does not try to fleece me for additional parts/work that my car may not need. Also goes the extra mile and ensures my car is repaired right the first time. As a mechanic I appreciate the customer who takes the time to provide vital information on the issue with their car in order to help diagnose/repair their vehicle first time around.

    Work harder ,smarter and longer then anyone else in any profession,that is the key. Most people are too lazy or unwilling to put in the extra time and effort to be better then everyone else. Also once you have skills , side jobs can make you more money then a 50hr week.....
    In framing it takes 5-7 years to acquire enough skill to do side work.....from what I read a 10yr mechanic makes 50k +/-...and a master 75k +....wish I had the skills of a mechanic but glad I have the income of a builder.

      Im young and I’m trying to find out how to run away from flatrate! Ive moved up a good amount im the short 2.5 years that I have been at my dealership (ASEs, dealer tests, dealer led classes) but I feel like to make hours I have to work more and/or cheat customers. I’m not the type to cheat customers and I hate working more then I have to just to hit 40 or 50 hours a week. Thinking about heavy duty diesel tech or something because I don’t want to end up like some of the older guys at my job. Miserably complaining about hours and warranty work.

    From 8:53 on, especially, THIS VID IS PURE GOLD (I watched it TWICE)!!! I have spent incalculable hours consuming automotive subject content on YT and NO ONE puts it quite like you! I'm not sure if everyone who listens to this understands exactly what you're giving them, Rustbelt Mechanic!
    This is something that an exceptional technician (I would think) would/should just know intuitively! It definitely gives that "WOW-factor" to the workmanship (and advances the profession/skill, really) that employers, customers, etc. should be able to expect. Yes, it takes time but is the RIGHT WAY to do things. Yes, Rustbelt Mechanic, TRUST IS EVERYTHING!!!
    Two thumbs up to your vid, Brother! Additionally, you have a new sub! God bless you and I hope your business really flourishes!!

    I have a spreadsheet also.
    Each week has 2 columns, in the top 2 rows, I have the date, hours total, and number of days worked (vacation is based on flagged hours/day, so I know quickly how to calculate it).
    Then going down, when I finish a ticket, I type hours flagged into column 1, and my RO number into column 2. If I have a discrepancy on my final flag sheet, it's quick and easy to find the ticket that's wrong.
    Then at the bottom, after I get that paycheck or stub, I type in my actual take home pay. On the far left, I calculate that average take home, and I can use that average rate to calculate how much my check will be next week, takes a little guess work out of it!
    As weeks go by, I can just hide old weeks so they don't clutter stuff up.

    I’ve been working as a technician for 23yrs and have never worked flat rate. I refuse to take a job that pays flat rate cause I’ve heard to many horror stories of shops slowing down and the work not being there or service managers who have their favorite tech so they feed him all the gravy work and everyone else gets screwed. If it works for you then that’s great, just not something I’m interested in.

    There are so many shops out there and all of them need SKILLED, hard working technicians, so if you don't like the flat rate system, don't work at a flat rate shop...pretty simple really.
    I have worked both flat rate and hourly and depending on how efficient and good you are at what you do, it really comes out to be approximately the same regardless of which one you work.
    If you are a die hard anti flat rate system guy, maybe it's time to revaluate your work ethics, efficiency, and growth in this field. If you're an anti hourly guy SAME SAME SAME!!!
    You have but one person to blame for your wage and you see that person every day in the mirror.

    Yeah i don't know where some of these warranty times come from. I had to do a rear seat upholstery or rear bench seat cover it paid 0.6 warranty time. It had 40-50 hog rings I had to cut off and replace. It was the first one I did but it still took me over 2 hours. If someone could get the old one off in 1 hour I'd be impressed. Some of the times the book time makes you really question where it came from.

    One of the comments mentioned time wasted looking for cars...and that got me started. At our Hendrick dealership, just a few of the ways that we lost time. Not just finding cars but moving up to 3 cars to get to the one you needed, but first finding the keys to those cars. Cars with dead batteries? good luck finding the jumper box. The car needs tires or alignment, but have to wait for the only machine we have is in use by another tech. "Can you change a bulb, wiper blades, pull a code?" This all just eats away at your time.

    I worked at the local Toyota dealership as a lube tech for about 8 months. I was pretty quick. Not super quick especially towards the end when injury took me out completely. I had a process that made sure that I never missed anything and to the best of my knowledge I only had one come back and that was only really because of the poor MAF sensor placement on the first gen Prius. Get any dirt on it during a filter change and it can kill the car until you clear codes. my system made it so that I had visual hints as to what I’ve done. Is the dipstick flopping around? I need to fill up the oil. Is the car still supported by the lift? Torque those wheels. It made it so that I didn’t have to remember or could quickly pick up where I was after getting pulled away.

    At our shop we are not on the flat rate system but we are one of the few. We use a hourly plus flatrate bonus system that reward techs for reaching 100% efficiency. If a tech works 45 hours and turns out 45+ hours worth of work then they get a $1 per hour bonus. If they reach 120% efficiency they get $2 per hour bonus. I think I need to revise this system slightly and we have also considered switching to commission. I think I need to be more of an enforcer in our shop to boost productivity.
    Great video and overview of how the flat rate system works. Also do you have to right your own estimates (look up parts and labor) or does your service writer do that?

    • @RustbeltMechanic
      @RustbeltMechanic  5 лет назад

      That seems like a pretty fair and goal oriented system, I like it! We go to the parts counter and they write up the parts quote, then it’s on the tech to get labor times for the quote and give it to the service manager/writer... unless it’s warranty of course...then you get what you get

    I love how my pay scale is set up, I have a hourly rate & receive 15% of my total ticket. Like today, I got approval on a small $1,000 ticket for a alternator a belt and a few small things on a Honda Odyssey. It calls for rite at 2 hours, so I’ll make around $150 for tho’s 2 hours on the flip side tho I make a hourly rate for the cold months if I don’t hit my % for the week and it’s like $15 a hour way lower than my commission rate but it’s nice having the guarantee. I hated thanksgiving through New Years at the Chevy dealership. It was bad for 3 or 4 weeks where we wasn’t barely getting anything

    Customer pay is so expensive because it's so difficult to make reasonable money on warranty. At hyundai we get zero diag, zero for rust and broken stuff, zero for the half hour on hold with techline, zero for all the recommended diag that techline says. So when customers come in the advisors and managers jack up the time to make up for where warranty lacks. I feel bad for the customers. Also what incentive do techs have to fix it right under warranty if you'll get paid more for throwing 2 parts at it instead of one.

    • @RustbeltMechanic
      @RustbeltMechanic  5 лет назад

      You guys need to look into a better warranty admin man. You can get paid for all those things, they just have to be heavily documented and possibly photographed. Every single one of my RO’s has at minimum one paragraph for warranty explaining every circuit, every test and rusted bolt etc and I don’t have issues very often at all getting my time for the jobs. Also yes there is an incentive to do things faster but there should also be incentive to do things right, we make the techs even under warranty fix blatant comebacks for free. If it’s a blatant comeback because you didn’t do the absolute diag and document it, you’re working for free.

    Step one: Have a service writer who cares
    Step two: Don't chase the bottom dollar
    Step three: Bust your ass like your living depends on it.
    When I was doing flat rate, I typically turned 120-130%, and made ok money. Some places had service writers who didn't care, or fed one tech over another, and in those cases I still turned over 100% efficiency, but sat for hours every day killing my total hours. I'm glad to be back on straight hourly, as a company mechanic. Lots less stress.

    My dad worked flat rate for years in the late 90s -mid 2000’s. I believe his all time record for one paycheck was 164 hours. He wasn’t allowed to stay on flat rate much longer, the dealership told him he needed to go to hourly because they wouldn’t be able to keep paying him those hours.

    • @ghostwrench2292
      @ghostwrench2292 4 года назад +7

      That doesn't make any sense. The shop gets the bulk of the labor rate + the parts markup on all work the technicians do. The more hours a tech flags, the more money they both make. There are techs in my shop who flag 150+ hours per pay period regularly. Management loves them.

    • @sidsnyder7023
      @sidsnyder7023 4 года назад +3

      Their rationale was “the highest paid tech in the shop before you couldn’t turn those hours and it’ll start some rifts if we keep giving you that amount of hours”.
      So they moved him into management a year later after his GM World Class certification and paid him a higher salary. It was politics.

    Awesome video!
    I would like to get your opinion or anybody else’s opinion that works at a dealership. Currently I work at a shop and have been for a few years now. I have a couple ASEs and was interested in getting into a dealership. I have an interview tomorrow morning at a Honda dealer a couple towns over and wondering what should I expect with not having any dealership experience. My manager at my current shop found out about the interview and was trying to talk me out of it. Telling me I’m going to be the oil change guy because I’ll be the newest and any work I write up, will be given to the other techs. I’m wondering if this is actually a thing in dealerships, or if he’s just blowing smoke up my butt. Thanks

    • @RustbeltMechanic
      @RustbeltMechanic  5 лет назад +2

      Depends on your work ethic...unless you’re master certified then you will be doing at least SOME oil changes. My recommendations would be to not turn down a single job that gets given to you and do each job the absolute best as possible. Also be willing to go get certifications for that specific manufacturer and let them know that.

      Thats what the interview is for. If you already have a job you have nothing to lose. Ask if you will be the oil change guy. If you havent been in the dealership world it may be to your benefit to take a few oil changes while you learn the computer systems for diagnosis and programming.

      @Krazyirish13 5 лет назад

      That's not always the case if you have no experience and no ases then more likely then not but the interviewer will tell you what position they have at what rate you can always say no and that if they are looking for someone with your quals to give you a call and you'll come on board but if you like the open spot and rate take it I liked working on at both dealerships I worked at

    As a new tech i have been struggling a little with flat rate, i have to learn so many new systems that take longer than normal. like right now in my bay i've got a car i've been working for 18hrs, 12 of which where diag. 4 of those where talking to tech-line. now im replacing the floor harness after it was replaced last year, the main reason the diag took so long(service manager didnt want to warranty the harness because he new i wouldn't get any money). turns out a rat ate the harness, yay i get paid. customer doesnt want to pay, trades the car in, now i get 90% of labor time ontop of the 16hr labor rate for the harness. this took 3 weeks, on and off diag of the car made it so i only got an average of 28hrs a week. I cannot wait for this car to be gone...

With every thing that needs done, that doesn't pay flat rate, the young one stay poor.

      Last October brought my car into Lithia. I am having a ton of issues that are well known and all over the internet, so I thought it best to bring it to a Dodge dealer. In October they had the car for over a month. Over Christmas they had it about 2 weeks. Still having the same issues. When I brought it in over Christmas I told Julie over the phone and wrote in on the envelope I dropped the keys in for service that whatever is wrong with the car is draining the battery and they would have to jump it. They had the nerve to not only come back to me and say the diagnosis was a dead battery, DUH, but charge me $130 for it. I wrote to the GM of Lithia more than a month ago and have had no response. .
