Sparrow, Speed as I often referred to him, was my neighbour during my childhood and in many ways he influenced me through his music. There is no question I learned a lot from him and I thank him for being a friend, a poet, the political commentator he was and as a cultural asset he remains to the Caribbean as a whole. Sparrow is one of my heroes and he is a true Caribbean sage. Your buddy Gerry
Sparrow, you are indeed a world gem and blessed entertainer. With such dexterity and down to earth interpretations of day to day issues wether its about love, tradeges or global struggles.
All hail to the King of Calypso, The Mighty Sparrow. What can I say in praise of this extraordinarily talented man that has not been said before. I will combine it in three words, he is bad ass. Kudos to the King.
Wow..this was a fantastic interview. I truly enjoyed this!! Sparrow a "work of art" ❤❤❤❤❤ Love him. After watching this video, I truly appreciate him much more than before. God Bless him.
Yes this is the best of Mighty Sparrow ever, whenever I listen to this music is always reminds me my origin and the HISTORY of black in some of the continents and makes me to be proud as an Africa. God bless you
always since I can remember listening to this singer of trinidad soca and even more so when the carnivals were in Venezuela greetings brothers from Venezuela
O lord tears come to mih eye. THIS is the quintessential Slinger. Such a powerful personality. Played in the hideaway tent for 1 season in '83 or something like dat. I remember being sooooo intimidated by is presence.
Mighty Sparrow- Calypso King of the World!!! This man is a legend- he has performed in Guyana (first time in the 1950s' 1956-57), his first performance at Carnegie Hall in 1966- source: Mighty Sparrow Vol.4 ICE Records liner notes. He has performed in the United Kingdom- London circa 1970-1971. He performed at FESTAC in Africa 1977-1978. I myself have seen him perform in 2005 at a Legends concert with Crazy, Calypso Rose & Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, and comedian Tommy Joseph. I am not going to lie, I was a little disappointed, remember, by this time Sparrow was already 70 so his days of being robust were long over. I guess you remember him from photos from the record jackets from his heydays. I will say it once more- I believe the Mighty Sparrow should retire. I mean, his body has been ravaged by diabetes- he slipped into a diabetic coma mid performance of "Jean & Dinah". Unless you are willing to pay to see a dead man perform, that's up to you!! I agree with David Rudder from Calypso Dreams (2004) "A calypsonian retires when he dies". Sparrow doesn't have any new material- his last social commentary was "Barack The Magnificent" (2008) and I believe that after 50-60 years of performances, he should stop- his health is more important. In any case, where he is considered, I wish he would get paid royalties for his music.
Sparrow is not only a calypso stylist without peer, but listening to him carefully in song and speech, one soon realizes how keenly insightful and viscerally 'smart' he is.
He was born in Grenada but is culturally Trinidadian having moved to Trinidad with his parents at the age of 18 months before he even knew himself. But big-up to Grenada for being the birth place of one of the greatest Calypsonians who has ever lived.
***** no Faroek. Jamaican music is Reggae - started by the one and only Mr. Bob Marley. Soca was created in Trinidad and Tobago by Calypsonian Lord Shorty, and the music is now enjoyed and loved by and played throughout the rest of the Caribbean.thanks for your inquiry.

If this music doesnt make you move - even if you are just sitting, there is something missing. How can anyone not love it!

Why nice try? What I stated are the hard facts about Sparrow's early years so I am not trying anything but big-up to Grenada still.
