This is the song my wife and I were married to in 2004,a year later we saw the Platters in Las Vegas, they didn't do this number but it was a great show.Nice to see that this song means so much to so many people.
This shuffle came out around the same time as the Four Tops' "I'll Turn To Stone" and has the exact same tempo and feel. Sonny Turner's voice sounds so much like Levi Stubbs that alot of folks assumed that this was the latest from the Motown hit factory.
I recently had the opportunity to see Sonny Turner. Wow, what a great show it was! At 76 years of age, he still has those dance moves......possibly better
I remember seeing Sonny Turner and the Platters perform "With This Ring" on American Bandstand. Most people don't realize that this song had the Motown musicians of Detroit. It is unlike any other Platters song. Special thanks for posting this remarkable song and Special thanks to Herb Boyd who continues to keep the Platters alive today.
The Platters came to perform for the soldiers at Camp Red Cloud, 2nd Infantry Division in South Korea back in 2000 when I was stationed there as a new 2LT. They were wonderful, and it was so kind of them to visit us all the way over there.
Sept.24th: Happy birthday Singer Sonny Turner of The Platters; Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Thank you and God bless. Legend. Thanks for the upload, lanLevine. Blessings
Just a note. Tony Williams was not an original Platter, the original lineup (1953) was, Cornell Gunter, Herb Reed, Alex Hodge, Joe Jefferson, David Lynch & Gaynel Hodge. Tony was part of the Platters mark II, the most popular line-up.
oooh ! i promise i'll always love you ! ha ha what a crackin' tune eh ? had the single back in the day issued here in the UK on stateside became quite collectable had an import of it too on ( i think ) musicor ? great track great post, many thanks for sharing regards dave
finally someone says that other than me, when i first heard this song a few months ago i thought it was the four tops but when i found out it was the platters i said to myself "he sounds like a young levi"
On the Mercury recordings, Harbor Lights and Reflections In The water were sung by Tony Williams. Sonny Turner did a version of Harbor Lights in 1967(Musicor recording).
de tijd van toen .helaas t is voorbij, maar komt ook nooit meer. maar de muziek is er gelukkig nog wel. wij waren arm, maar deze muziek maakte ons rijk. wiecher zwiep
You have me wondering about when Tony Williams left, I see other sources saying 1961, and June 1960. Am I to believe that Sonny Turner sang on Harbor Lights and Reflections In The Water? By the way, see my post of Tony Williams solo.
It doesn't sound a whole lot different from the 1967 original. Re-records generally suck(IMO anyway), but this re-record is very well done. An Exception to the rule. One of the best beach music classics of ALL time.

It just doesn't get any better than this. Love Sonny Turner, and he's still the ultimate performer
It was filmed in Las Vegas in early 1999.
Saw Sonny Turner in Las Vegas, absolutely brilliant and with Ray Pollards daughter, Wendy on female vocals what more could you ask for.

We've shared the stage with Sonny Turner and he puts on a G-R-E-A-T show. He is the new Mr. Excitement

Brilliant stuff. Anybody think it's like a bit of Northern Soul?
It certainly is, and did cross over.

Musicor was the original label that published this song in the US (another popular artist that recorded for Musicor was Gene Pitney).

My uncle preformed with the platters in a bar in Idaho in the early 90's. That young lady featured in this video preformed solo in one song.

Sonny Turner most definitely did the lead vocal.
Thank you RUclips.
Jackie Wilson's protege. Showmanship.
It wasn't a whole new lineup from the original group. Originals David Lynch and Herb Reed were still with the Platters in 1967.

It's the 1999 re-recording
Sonny Turner
