People were saying SNL isn't "what it used to be" when Eddie Murphy was there. He was "no Dan Ackroyd" or Bill Murray or whatever. And they've said it about every new cast since. Seriously, you can look this up in magazines or newspapers from any point in the last 40+ years.
One thing I will say about Shane (this isn't about anything SNL related) He's actually had some of the funnier and more classy down syndrome jokes/stories ever to come out of "offensive" comedy. He's not often punching down with it, it's relatable, it's funny, it's often wholesome. I'm pretty tired of podcast comedy in general just like Snl comedy but I think Shane did right by comedy and people in general on that specific topic in his jokes.
It's affected him personally due to his family, which gives him perspective and an emotional core at the heart of the jokes. That's why his DS jokes work, and someone like Chapelle just seems like a jerk when he's going off on trans people.

They don't understand him. He's using no no words without malice, because that's how most people have always used them. They're trying to walk the line of admitting that Gillis is funny and not hateful, and not admitting that they've been the types of people who painted everyone like him those things in the first place.

I'm a politics nerd so I'm very much in it as far as paying attention to what's going on. My conclusion from knowing too much about the minutae of politics is that we should leave entertainers (athletes included) out of it and vice versa. Politics has been injected in too many spaces, it ruins everything. Idc if LeBron is on my side politically, I care that he is good at his job of entertainment. I won't enjoy the NBA less if he disagrees with me. The same applies to comedians, actors, singers, etc.
