Great tutorial. This is the most complete info source for FCPX tracking. One thing that could use it's own video is "how to cope with face blurring (or other effect) when someone steps in front of the subject temporarily". Can't just interpolate through the blockage because you don't want the blur object mask to cut through the person or object that obstructed the subject. I've tried blading the clip at the point the blockage begins and ends, but that gets complicated if there are many instances. I would think this would be a common problem with FCPX editors. Make sense?
can you track with a mask effect? i was trying to smoothly mask from one shot to another as the camera moved behind a pole but the mask is uneven, as it was shot handheld at a slightly inconsistent speed
Thank you for a very clear tutorial! Is it possible to track more than one object in the same clip? Maybe two people running in different directions? If not, is there a workaround for this?
Can you teach how when you change a clip to vertical for, let's say Instagram, you can use a tracker to keep the face in the center of that vertical area now?
I only get so far through this process. I get the object marked and analysed - hit done but no transform - tracker comes up in the top of the viewer? Also I get 'no tracker set' on the clip. Can anyone help? I have FCP 10.7
@@tomselent I have solved the problem, but I’m not sure how I did it. I just keep going over the process and now after about 10 or 12 tries I’ve managed to do it correctly.
Ooo finally! I feel like I actually know what I’m doing. I’ve spent years absorbing other videos on how to use it and I learnt so much more here - like the tracker editor! Who knew?!
Can someone explain how to attach media (like a png of an arrow, for example) to the tracker if you add the tracker from the inspector column on the right? Dylan shows how to add the tracker that way, but never shows what to do next if you want to attach an image to it. Or am I missing something? I know how to drag and drop an image (or title) to be tracked to something on screen, but I don’t understand how to add the image if you create the tracker from the right side column. Thanks.
Is it just me, or are keyframes for video effects broken in 10.8.6? If I drop a gaussian blur onto the video and then keyframe the shape mask, It doesn't actually save any of the keyframes. But if I drop the gaussian blur and track something random for 2 seconds, then move it around, the new keyframes get saved. There are many times that the tracker simply can't do what I need, so I manually keyframe the shape. I've been doing this for years without any problem, until now.
Update: So if I add the blur effect to the video clip itself, then create a shape mask, it will keyframe correctly. But the old way of doing it, by dragging the blur directly onto the video clip (where it creates the shape mask for you), doesn't work anymore. That's annoying.
Dylan frequently uses a plugin called Keyper, for the scenes where we overlay stuff behind him. it’s ultra easy to use, and usually does an incredible job right off the bat, when you slap it only a clip!
Has anybody else had the issue where Final Cut Pro freezes the moment you click analyze? I'm using .mov iPhone captured clips, stored locally on the Macbook's hard drive, and have clips lasting about 10-20 seconds. Clicking Analyze results in the program freezing, with the pop-up window showing a progress bar (that goes nowhere) while the app (but not MacOS) locks up. This happens regardless of the type of analysis method. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction!
Thanks for the nice explanation. I have the next question. I make videos with my drone. Now, just like in sports matches, I want to project a logo on the field. This works, but when I fly over the field, the logo moves along. I would like the logo to stay in place while I fly over it. Is this possible with FCP?
I've been trying to use the tracker with a picture of a person walking to the right with his hand pushing a title. I want to use keyframes to move the person but the tracker doesn't work when there are keyframes set. I gave up and built compound clips and use keyframes for both. I also noticed when the clip that has the tracker is reversed (x=-100) it reverses what is tracked. Any ideas?
Can you possibly tell me why tracker options aren't popping up when I want to apply a photo to certain things I've already tracked? It's very annoying..
Hey Dylan, thanks a lot for this video! I tried to track an object that goes eventually out of the screen but it brakes. Is there a way somehow to simulate its path?
Dear Dylan, Just a question for the "How To Edit Tracking" part. I followed all the steps for the Gaussian blur and also selected the Offset from tacker option you mentioned. Thanks to this option, if I am right, I could give "more information" for the tracker (bigger selection area) and then I could specifically blur the desired area within this space. However, I need to edit some parts when the tracking went wrong. So I followed your steps, i.e. deleted the wrong parts in the "Tracking: Object Track" timeline using the range selection tool. When I go back to the deleted tracking area to manually adjust the Tracker, the Blured area still remains in the original spot (i.e not affected by the manual changes). Basically, when you use on the 2 options/buttons you have on top of the viewing screen (Shape and Tracker), the red lines (for shape) don't follow where I newly placed /corrected the grid (for Tracker)... They still behave the original analysis. I hope you could be clear enough.... Any idea how to get this done right ? Many thanks in advance.
Selecting the option: "Pin To Tracker" could be part of a solution. However, it doesn't blur the specific area anymore but the integrality of the tracker grid which is not what I am looking for... Quite clueless what do to...
Thank you so much Dan!! Also, I just noticed you may have sent this twice. Happy to refund you if you want to email me at Dylan@thefinalcutbro.com. I think I have to do it via Paypal, as it doesn't look like RUclips has a way to issue refunds from what I can tell. Let me know!
WOW!!! Dylan - YOU are the MAN!! I've been fighting with trackers for a long time but this tutorial made it SO easy for me to setup a Gaussian blur on license plates in a video I just finished!!! Thanks!!
Helpful to see this being used and in action with clear examples. The amount of times I try to use this but there’s one issue or another (not knowing exactly what) then giving up and doing a dirty manual key framing instead 🥲 Nice one 👌🏻

I had no idea you could select within the tracker editor and delete parts. That is so helpful!
Best Object Tracker tutorial for FCP X 🏆

Yes! Just add another tracker to the scene following the different steps shown in the video.
FCPX won't let me analyze anything... I hate this software

Me too! Send Help! I don‘t know how I get this window where I can adjust the pin tracker or offset.

Dude, what plugins and settings do you make for your voice? It looks pretty cool.

I was about too ask the same question. I'd love to now how to do this.

Couldn’t get any of the object tracking to work. It was total garbage
I'm a total newbie, but could it be that Apple Motion's tracker works much better, or have I just set something up wrong?
I don’t see a ‘tracking’ option and my fcp is updated

Handy if you said what version of FCP you’re using. I have an older Mac- key is can I use these new features. Thx

lol crazy…now I can fake a colorized light shining off and on on parts of my subject. Had no idea this was possible
Hey Dylan, thanks a lot for this video! I tried to track an object that goes eventually out of the screen but it brakes. Is there a way somehow to simulate its path?
But this video doesnt show how to acually applay footage to be tracked..

You’ll need to select the shape option that should be at the top of the screen to make changes to your blur layer. Hope that helps!
The camera lock effect should be a good way to stabilise hyperlapses, right?
Yes!
ooo i just found the machine learning analysis method haha this software is so sick
im trying to track a nipple for a wardrobe malfunction lmfao
Thank you so much! Now I know what’s going wrong at some my cut.
As always dude, bloody awesome, just saved me a ton of time.
Thank you so much,Dylan!!!Cool

Niiice! The info on how to remove segments of the tracking, and add in key frames - was new and mega helpful.
🙌
Couple cool tips in here! I totally forgot that FCP can automatically detect faces etc. Great video as always 😉
You have such great content and super useful plugins!
