It really is. Zoo Tycoon 2 was way more user friendly and it was so easy for me to play as a kid. Part of that reason could be because I played it so young, but I really believe Planet Zoo just isn't as easy to use, but you sure can build some amazing things in it way more elaborate than in Zoo Tycoon :)
I wish I could "like" this video more than once. I struggled for literally hours trying to get the stupid facilities to snap properly into existing building shells that I'd copied from other parts of the career zoos, and all I needed to do was use Shift. Thank you for showing me that, and all the rest of the techniques. You've really got an eye for beautiful building, too!
It's not your fault. It's the game's fault. I'm still baffled why the building system doesnt just use grid by default, with an option for freeform (like in the sims)
The reason I started watching geekism was because of the planet coaster tutorials. Everything comes full circle with planet zoo. This will be very helpful jonti, thank you.
Finally saved up enough money to buy a computer and play this game. Unsurprised to find out I could not wrap my head around building as it's such a layered system! This tutorial super duper helped me so thank you so much! Also placing nettles in the planter had me in tears
Hey Geekism, Like most new players I was stuggle with building and such. I have seen some tutorial vids now but there was always something not clear for me. I am so happy that I have found your channel. This is the first building tutorial that is very clear for me. For sure I will see this video a few more times but in the end I know that I will be constuct some builds without to much frustration hahaha. Thank you Geekism for making an old man happy as a child :-) I will rush over to your Path tutorial video now. Greeting from the Netherlands and sorry for my bad English!
the first four hours I couldn't figure out how to a) rotate my damn camera when it gets obstructed and b) how to rotate a building I was constructed!! appreciate these videos
Yeah, my laptop runs hard while I'm playing the game. The fan can't seem to keep the system cool. It's been 6 years... I'm due for an upgrade but can't afford better than what I have, which wasn't cheap either. Sigh.
Thank you so much! I didn't play Planet Coaster and was feeling kinda lost. This is EXACTLY the point in the right direction I needed to get started building.
Thanks so much for the tutorial! You have a really great way of explaining/teaching: you speak slowly enough to follow and you demonstrate as you’re doing it.
This is the most comprehensive and understandable building tutorial I've seen! Thank you so much! Now I can actually build a zoo that doesn't look super generic.
This is a really great tutorial! It covers pretty much everything I couldn't figure out. Now I don't have to shed tears while placing pre-made buildings everywhere. Thanks!
Thank you so much for making this vid! im new to planet games and this was very informative and helpful :D amazing job and please make more like this, i wanna be able to build as good as i possibly can and you just helped me along :D
I hope you don't think me lazy, but would you be able to post or create a document with all the keyboard shortcuts you use? Having something to print and hang next to my monitor would be tremendously helpful.
Just wanted to thank you for this and the path tutorials. I just picked up PC earlier this year after getting an updated laptop that can semi handle it and even viewing other tutorials found myself struggling a bit. Watched these and Sdan's and really sparked something. Think I've spent more time in the PZ beta than I have combined in PC. All of the key shortcuts and grid info was super helpful. Started me on a path to creating a treetop zoo. Still need some work on creative side, but this really got me going. Ready of course for full PZ, but itching to take some of this to PC too. Just got to figure out that coaster building.
Thank you for this video. I got Planet Coaster and never really played it cause I was so frustrated with the difficulty of the building tools... I spent my childhood on Zoo Tycoon, and I really want Planet Zoo but I was scared to never play it if I can't build anything. Please feel free to make as much tutorials as you want cause it seems like it's helping a lot of people!
This is insanely helpful, thank you very much! I've never played Planet Coaster and struggle a lot with the building system of The Sims 4, but I can't wait to learn more with detailed help from an expert. Really cool, saving this in a playlist for later :D
So pumped for this video. The first Geekisim video I ever watched was the planco pirate building tutorial. Jonti you always do such great tutorials. :)
man that building feature is so extensive and well thought out it seems. impressive really how much time they have spend on developing that feature. And they tossed in the basic buildings for people that cant bother and just want to play the game. Watching this video makes me want to go and see if i can come up with some cool stuff... Like a whole roofed reptile area that houses turtoise and crocs too or something like that =)
PaulsLey recommended your building tutorial on a few of his videos and I can see why, very easy to follow with lots of useful tips. Thanks to yourself and him I don't think I'll rage quit Plant Zoo after all.
So my question would be...when you make these specialized huts do the visitors still dislike to see them if they have staff buildings inside or are they okay with them and it wont bother guests?
Yea they will be, so just make sure your staff buildings are only pathed with the staff paths. Don't worry, you can get real creative with them. One of the zoos has their staff buildings in the middle of the zoo, but because the guests can't see their fronts they don't mind them.
@@Schnipps So if I turn the building in a direction that the front is facing away from the guests they don't mind them? Gosh I hate this mechanic. Spend so much time making awesome stuff buildings only that the spoiled brats can go "meh, theres a staff building, I hate this place" ; ___ ;
@@user-dj6sk2uo8g Nah, Just put them slightly away from the guest paths and make sure you use the staff paths to link them to the guest paths that's all.
@@user-dj6sk2uo8g you know the little keys that show you how far electricity and water go and all that? Well one of the options up there is to see negative affects on guests. So basically you'll see a red circle around staff buildings and that's how far they should be from the guest paths! Guests will only be unhappy if they touch that red area.
Hey, I really like your videos. I have been watching since Planco on and off and i have finally just managed to get Planet Zoo and i am super exited to get stuck in (just refreshing myself now with your building tutorial). Have you done any big build series on Planet Zoo like you used to do on Planco and are you planning to do more? Just noticed on your playlists that there is not much on Planet Zoo yet? Anyway hope the move went well (i know it was a while age lol) and look forward to watching more videos, keep up the good work.
This was a lot of good information. Really wish I had seen something like this when I used to play Planet Coaster a lot, but great info to have now as I get started with Planet Zoo. Thank you so much!

I do hope you are taking the time to report issues using the issue tracker as you find them. The currently are a lot of building system related bugs and while I report all the ones I find, I know people like you who are pretty much masters of building will find a lot more than that average player won't.
16:25 It would be amazing if they add a 'blend' tool in this game, so it automatically merge objects into each other without making it look weird like shown here.
If at all possible, could you give a tutorial on how to design a building with several other buildings (veterinary surgery, bathrooms, etc) inside? Something similar to Nuna Katana's buildings?
I should have reacquainted myself with planet coaster (PC) before jumping straight into planet zoo XD. Can't believe I'm needing tutorials to remind me how to do all this after I'd become so pro in PC.
I really love your tutorials, I've learned quite a lot :D Is there a shortcut overview somewhere? While building I seem to forget a lot of them, so it might be helpful to write them all down...

Method 2 -Use Advanced move to move the overlapping item along the z-axis (green arrow/circle) *Keep these items as a group, so if you have to move items along the z-axis multiple times, you won't have to move every one individually -If you are layering items and you cannot click the desired item: (23:50) -Delete the item interfering with the desired item -Click the desired item - Press "Ctrl + Z" to undo the deletion, you should still have the desired item selected -Move the desired item
Are you still planning on doing more advanced tutorials for the building mechanics? After 30+ hours in the game, I feel like my hotkeys only work sometimes, and that everyone posting the speed builds seem to be able to control the game so much better than I can. I'm binge watching everything trying to figure out the tricks!
It's the first time I gotta look up a tutorial on how to build in a game... But for some reason I kinda like how complicated it feels, probably the challenge of it.
Thanks for this video! I got this game to play with my kids, 10 yr old and 5 yr old... I didn't realize the technical aspects would be so involved! Wish I could just have you in discord so I could ask questions to learn this game on the go LOL. I will ask this though, this has to do with the 'world grid'. Do you build habitat barriers, paths, and everything according to the world grid? If so, what do you not build on the world grid. I am royally curious about this.
I love this, but I have a couple questions :) This are absolute noob questions coming from someone who have never played Planco, so for people who play it it'll feel like obvious ones. How do you put down multiple of one item? (if it's not automatic) How do you select multiple items (let's say a column that you wan to move) And how do quickly copy said multiple selected items (i.e columns) Some of those can be figured out by playing the game ofc, just trying to save myself the frustration of messing about in the game for 30+ minutes for something simple and minute
I try the trick about align thing right into the middle to have a perfect line up but when I do it it replace the selected object instead of adding it by the other ... Nice tuto by the way!
21:35 TMW you've been doing game dev/3D work for like 15 years and winced a little when he referred to the green axis as X, the blue axis as Y, and the red axis as Z 😅 (and yes lol I understand it was just an example to demonstrate Z-fighting)
Thankyou!!! is there a video on how to download and place builds? I play many different games but have never used the steam work shop, so a bit confused!
What this video taught me is that you should have ctrl+z'd the entire other house.

It's not your fault. It's the game's fault. I'm still baffled why the building system doesnt just use grid by default, with an option for freeform (like in the sims)
Centrioless to be honest I like the freedom of not having a grid because I can only lay down walls correctly with the grid and the roof never works
Beautiful! i do not have the time and creativity to build something like this.

Watching this video, I actually spoke the words "Ooh, I'm learning!" This was very helpful! However, is there a hotkey sheet somewhere? Yikes.

thank you for this. I was feeling so lost. I still am haha. But this has helped a lot!
This is such a big help. U have no idea how long it took me to just put 1 bit of roof on a building 😣😣😅😅
I really love your tutorials, I've learned quite a lot :D Is there a shortcut overview somewhere? While building I seem to forget a lot of them, so it might be helpful to write them all down...
Visual break down:
Game Basics
-Use favoriting system and filters to more easily find desired items
-Adding trims to roofs will add the off-hang detail
-Grouping allows you to move entire build together, rather than moving every individual piece or forcing you to build in the spot you want the building
*This will not move paths
-If you get out of Group Edit, reselect the group by clicking on a decoration item and pressing "R"
Grid System
-Grid symbol on item in selection menu shows what will align to the grids shown when choosing a facility
-Wall pieces will align to inside edges of grid boxes
-Items separate from the grid system will rotate at degree-controlled angles
-Items can be aligned to the World grid or the Group Editing grid
-Building on the World grid allows for easier alignment
*If you want to build at an angle different from the World Grid:
-Pull the item to a wall section, item should align to wall horizontally
-If you want to put the item in a custom location, turn off alignment with the "F" key
-"X" turns on advanced move, allowing you to change the x, y, z coordinates of the item (aka its vertical/horizontal alignment in a circle rather than a square grid system); pressing "X" again changes the mode from arrows(movement) to circles (rotation)
-x (red)moves the item left/right
-y (blue) moves the item up/down
-z (green) moves the item back/forward
Shortcut Keys
-"Z" to rotate (horizontally) selected item
-"M" to quick select move an item
-Hold "shift" to move selected items upward or downward
-Degree slider controls how far the item shifts up/down or turns
-"Space" toggles on/off rotation of an item separate from a grid system
-Holding "Ctrl" will break the path away from auto-connecting to a doorway or another path, allowing you to move the path wherever is allowed
-"Shift + X" will duplicate an item and enter advanced move mode (19:45)
*Tip: if desired, rotate an item slightly or move it up or down as you duplicate it, for a more varied look (good with plants)
-Hold "Shift" and click to select multiple items (good for duplicating and moving items)
-Holding "Ctrl" and clicking an item unselects it
*Tip: When planning on duplicating and moving a group of items, keep alignments the same
Paths (12:00)
-Separated into three types: path, queue, and staff
-Path is used by visitors and staff
-Queue is used by visitors when attached to a ride
-Staff is used by only staff members (to access facilities, utilities, and off-limits habitats
-Paths can have rounded or squared edges (only when attached to a grid system), toggled on/off in the path menu
-To align to a grid system, a path must be connected to a doorway
*Remember to connect the path to other doorways if used in a multiple facility build (as shown in the video 12:45)
-Holding "Ctrl" will break the path away from auto-connecting to a doorway or another path, allowing you to move the path wherever is allowed
Aligning Items (13:45)
-Select an item on the grid and press "X" to open advanced move mode
-While in advanced move, select another item from the menu
*This should place the new item at the origin of the originally selected item
-Use the on-screen advanced move to more the new item into place
-"Shift + X" will duplicate an item and enter advanced move mode
Z Fighting (when two items occupy the same space along the z-axis)
Method 1
-Select one of the overlapping items
-In the item menu in the top right, select "Remove from group"
-Advance move the selected item into the desired location
*Remember! Grouping items when building allows you to move all items within the group at once. When you remove an item from the initial group, it will NOT MOVE with the rest of the items. You will have to realign the second group if you move your building. If you are building where you want to build to go, this is not an issue.
Method 2
-Use Advanced move to move the overlapping item along the z-axis (green arrow/circle)
*Keep these items as a group, so if you have to move items along the z-axis multiple times, you won't have to move every one individually
-If you are layering items and you cannot click the desired item: (23:50)
-Delete the item interfering with the desired item
-Click the desired item
- Press "Ctrl + Z" to undo the deletion, you should still have the desired item selected
-Move the desired item
Thanks for this! Keep the tutorials coming
Awesome info, thank you! Now to remember it all 😜
It's the first time I gotta look up a tutorial on how to build in a game... But for some reason I kinda like how complicated it feels, probably the challenge of it.
Thank you for being a quality person and making this video lol
(if it's not automatic)
How do you select multiple items (let's say a column that you wan to move)
And how do quickly copy said multiple selected items (i.e columns)
Some of those can be figured out by playing the game ofc, just trying to save myself the frustration of messing about in the game for 30+ minutes for something simple and minute
So helpful, thank you!
Excellent Tutorial on building
Thankyou!!! is there a video on how to download and place builds? I play many different games but have never used the steam work shop, so a bit confused!
This was absolutely awesome. Thank you very much.
Amazing tutorial! I don't even have the game yet, but am so excited for it!! 😅
I might have missed it but how to you rotate items with a hot key? is it also Z?
