"You don't need a 3D printer to make a weapon." True. Nothing is stopping you from making a cheap slamfire pipe shotgun / rifle for much less cost and much more reliability. 3D printed guns are seldom an issue.

You can print a gun, but a plastic gun that only fires one shot isn't that useful. Also sneaking a plastic gun past security would be easy, sneaking the metal bullets is a little harder.
You can also, very easily, just buy a gun. The scary thing about guns is not the ability to manufacture them...

That is how it is actually done. Check for Prusa's 3D farm where new printers are printed by actual same printers.

My highschool has two 3D printers and we are often asked to print things to help those who need it. My teacher was asked to print a hand with strings attached to it that would allow a handless child to grab things and such.

You know, you could change the speed and fill density based on the detail level and size of your print to massively optimize and reduce the print time. That spork would take 10 minutes or so with a standard .4mm at 50mm/s at 30% infill.

As a Technology Teacher, I teach drafting and design that includes using a 3D printer. Some of the biggest negatives I have found is the time, the cost of materials, and the noise. I have also found students who say "Why do we need a shop? Why make things out of wood or metal..." ect. This is not to be replacing the way we manufacture, but as another form. One great achievement my students and I have found is that the objects made can easily be used for foundry production. It takes a while, but you do get quite a piece that works as a mold.

i'm going to college for game design at the moment, and the gaming department has one, so do the engineering and architectural classes, and I remember them saying you could make prosthetics with it. The architecture department also has a laser cutter for their building models.
that and we have 25 top of the line gaming rigs. And this is a community college.

7 years on and there is a massive leap in 3D printers
I managed to make a car from scratch using a 3d printer and a program called Blender for a school project. It took a long time. But being able to build something straight out of my imagination and hold it physically in my hand made it all worth it. Technology has really come a long way.
Printing weapons is what scares me. There are so many positive things you can print but also so many horrible things. I hope we can control it somehow.
***** It shouldn't scare you. There are easier ways to make a weapon with common items without a 3D printer, and the world is still OK. 3D printers won't change anything in this regard.

Even 3D printed guns need to be assembled with several metallic parts which you either have to buy and/or manufacture yourself. From what I saw, they still seem complicated.
I think the printer should come with an independent app that can control wether you can print or you can't (prohibited) so it's controled by the server somehow idk just make an app for the printer to control what is user going to print. Sorry my english isn't that good😁

Watching this video 5 years later, oh some of the comments made were so accurate! Printers are much more advanced, quieter, faster, affordable. The capability has improved, and 3d printing in space and travel - what a great point to have brought up.

1:20 I saw a video where the printed a fully functional prosthetic arm for a child. It was amazing. It had to be assembled, but the printed up all the parts for it.

There are over 20 different filament colours available for 3D printing. Probably even more. As well as experimental filaments like Carbon Fibre and Copper Fill.
