Ok so when you purchase a dosage form (tablet, capsule, etc) you see two names on it. The first name (the name on the top) is the brand name (brand name is basically a trade name of that drug for a particular company). The second name is what's called a generic name (that name will remain the same for every brand name). For example Tylenol is a brand name. It contains acetaminophen. When a doctor writes a prescription he usually writes brand names. If he writes a generic name he'll trick the generic box at the bottom of the prescription. We pharmacists encourage doctors to write generic names, cuz it will save cost to patients as we can recommend a cheap brand.
