- Hi, welcome to Speak Japanese Naturally.
Today, I'll be in a supermarket doing grocery shopping.
You'll see some things that are unique to supermarkets in Yamanashi prefecture.
You'll see a very kind cashier too.
I hope you'll enjoy it.
All the things I say are written in Japanese with furigana and English subtitles.
0:00 Start
1:37 Vegetables and Fruits Section
2:00 About Very Expensive Grapes
3:39 Raw fish section
4:39 Meat section
5:40 "Isshoubin" Wine
7:04 Ice Creams
8:56 Others
10:30 The Cashier
I usually make videos about the Japanese pitch accent.
Japanese is a pitch accent language, so you should imitate the pitch when you practice speaking!
That will help you sound more natural. This channel deals with the Kanto(Tokyo) dialect, which is also standard Japanese and is used in most textbooks and national broadcasts.

I know this is a practice video but I'm mostly sitting here admiring how clean and organized this store is compared to a US store XD
There are clean grocery stores in the US 👀
@@DanielleBaylornot always 😂😂😂
i'm so happy you blur out the faces of the others in the store! so thoughtful. i wish privacy was more valued in the US by vloggers. i've had people come into the store i work at and film me unwillingly. so it's nice to see you taking care not to do that.
this video was so so helpful!! i loved it and i'll rewatch it again and try to read the japanese subtitles this time! thank you💖
Yeah meanwhile in america people whip out their phones the second they think an interesting interaction is about to happen and make sure they are filming the person as much as possible 😅😅😅
@@nervousbunnygaming It's our constitutional right via the first amendment to be able to film in public and an extension of what our founding fathers fought for in liberty. God bless America.
@@TheSlendermangNo its not. People have a right to privacy. Anyway, it's illegal to record people without consent in Japan and you're basically required to blur out faces. You generally have to ask the owner for consent beforehand if you plan on recording inside a privately owned business too.
@@TroublechanJP-jy5um I'm not talking about Japan. It is a constitutional US right to film public places and public officials in those public spaces within reason.
Thank you for touring us at a スーパー
ive been studying japanese as my third language for three years, and just recently ive started trying to use everything ive learned via watching japanese videos and media, i still find it extremely hard to keep up and underestand everything but i hope that in a few weeks ill be able to grasp things more easily
I’m sure you will😊
Ganbatte!!😁
It really helped me with both my reading and listening! I hope we can get more videos like this for in the future.
I’m thinking of other videos of this kind. So please stay tuned😊
It was very helpful for me. I have recently started learning Japanese.... though I am finding it hard to learn this videos are helping me a lot
I love japanese supermarkets...especially the sashimi and natto section 😋 and Sake and green tea products...I really hope that we can travel again to Japan ✈️🇯🇵...when this Covid is over for good
Right. I hope the day comes soon too, and you can enjoy sashimi, natto, green tea, sake....😋
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Hi, do you plan to visit also a drugstore? I would enjoy this a lot. With best wishes 😃
You have put so much effort
watching from komatsu thank you for this helping tools
Thank you for making these videos! They are really hepful and keep me motivated! WoW, those hanging grapes are beautiful!
Oh, you actually saw the very last part of this video?? Thank you!
The grape field is my son’s friend’s father’s and he put a lot of effort into it😊
As a complete beginner still, this video was great to listen to every day speech. Also entertaining to see similarities and differences in the supermarket compared to ours. (:
Your channel is indispensable!! Thank you!
I'm glad to hear that. Thank you😊
Just found your channel and your videos are so so helpful!!
I'm glad you found my channel! Thank you for the comment :)
Super
good video, I learnt a lot
Awesome videos... So hard to learn japanese language for anyone. But your videos keeps me motivated for moving forward. Congrats
I’m glad to hear that! Thank you 😊😊
The Masters Class ad that played before this video was actually super good :) I watched the whole thing. It was the Master Class for rock climbing, taught by that mad man Alex Honnold from Free Solo.
Great video. It was fun to watch. I'm going to watch more in this series. It's interesting to see how you guys have recycle bins at the very entrance for the plastic containers that were bought previously.
I like that part too. Now it’s easier for us to throw them away as a part of recycling
I know Japan values politeness and customer service, but wow!! The cashier was so incredibly nice!! I think the word here would be 欣快 (kinkai)?
I also work as a cashier, but in America, that kind of politeness is very very unusual. It's fascinating how in Japan, formal and professional speech is considered polite, but in America, more casual and friendly speech is polite. If someone spoke to me in America the way that cashier does in Japan, I would be very confused, lol. I worry sometimes that I'll get mixed up with not remembering to use polite speech rather than friendly/familiar speech!
Thank you.
Espectacular gracias Mujer!!!
Gracias!!
Now, I wanna buy some Meiji chocolate, some Haagen Dazs ice cream, and some of the famous Cup Noodle. Curry is my fave. Love it!
You know well about Japanese products 😁😁👍
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Yes... they are delicious!! Oishii!
I'am beginning to learn japanese (hiragana and Katakana only now and I'am learning more vocabulary ) and I am discovering your beautiful country with you! This video was great to learn more about the groceries product name
.. And even the price!
I'll make more videos for people like you☺️
Japanese Supermarkets are so interesting I just wonder around looking at all the products and the packaging is so appealing.

thanks for this video, it was very nostalgic! i used to love going to the supermarket when i lived in japan, for some reason i found it very relaxing (here i find it quite stressful, haha). i wonder if maybe it has something to do with the sounds and music that they play in japanese supermarkets?
I must say that the Japanese cashiers are really kind.
It depends on the person, but yes, most of them are kind😊
This is amazing! I need stuff like this? I’m trying to immerse myself in the language, spending 98% of my time listening to Japanese. Listening to a Japanese audio book as I type this :) ha.
All input at this stage, no output(speaking). The rest of the time I’m memorizing words, Kata and Kanji.
But it is hard from me to find Japanese media with Japanese subtitles. Also I’m looking for stuff like this with relevant present day language. Anime is fun but they don’t always speak like average Japanese native people today.
Wow, you work hard! I'll make more videos like this. I hope those will help you too :)
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally I think I miss spoke… I meant I’m spending the majority of my STUDY time listening/watching Japanese media. About 2-3 hours a day, broken up throughout the day :) I’m reading some grammar and writing some Kanji. I’m not doing any speaking yet and probably won’t for a few more months.
Me encantan los contenidos de este canal
Muchas gracias ☺️
How wholesome and polite can a nation be?
Chashier says: Sorry for the waiting.
👍✨😄
I really like this video. I want to repeat the video and review the sentences, until I can finally come to Japan and try it out myself.
Please do that!! I hope the day that everyone can travel freely comes soon and you can come to Japan 😁
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Thank you! I hope so too.
It was interesting to see inside the Japanese grocery store. Did you ever consider teaching Japanese from the package labels? I was trying to read the katakana and hiragana as you wandered around. It was fun.
I’d never thought about that, but you gave me a great idea!
I’ll make that type of video!
I’ll think about how I can make it.
Thank you 😊 🙌
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally やった。 :D
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Hi Fumi-san, I recently came across your channel and I find it really helpful for acquiring Japanese phrases for everyday use. Yes, the suggestion with the labels is a good one. I think it would be also great to use a supermarket visit to teach and practice the cost of the products, i.e. numbers and counters. For instance, which counters are used for different fruits and vegetables, for packs of things, for bottles, flat things, units of measure, etc. That would be very helpful! Thanks in advance!
Excellent video! A nice finish to your shopping by adding Mejii chocolates, which are fantastic (sold in the US, too). One "problem"--I would have bought the grapes, and returned the natto, LOL
I didn't know about the popularity of olive oil...
Very good filmmaking quality, too, and a very thorough look at a Japanese grocery store.
Thank you!!
And you found the chocolate!!😁
I was taking too much time choosing that chocolate, so I cut that scene.
You don’t like natto??
My kids don’t like it either. It’s good for the health though
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Natto looks like baked beans, which is a common side dish in America ( or maybe it used to be). Try to imagine an American taking a spoonful of natto by mistake, and watching his reaction..LOL
I do know about the health benefits, but that taste..maybe it's better if you were given it as a child..
12:47 i never knew you need to bring your own basket. Great video too
You don’t have to bring your basket, if you buy a plastic bag there. I prefer bringing my basket though 😁
Thank you for making this! I also wonder if you hold the camera by hand or is it attacthed to something? And does people usually react when they see you wearing/holding it? Thanks
I use Osmo Pocket and I hold it by hand. Nobody notice it. Are you thinking to make this kind of videos?😁
Hi Fumi! Thanks for the video. Really enjoyed watching it! Any chance of going to a Hard Off, Off House or 2nd Street? I really miss walking into Thrift Stores in Japan and walking around the place looking for a bargain! Haha. Look forward to the next Tour around your Town and Language Videos. Cheers.
So you’ve lived in Japan! And actually, you can see a 2nd Street building in the beginning of this video. The building is next to the supermarket. I’ll visit it someday 😁
@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally Thanks Fumi! I haven't lived in Japan, but have visited many times. Would love the chance to live there. Look forward to the next Walk and Talk video! Cheers.
This was a very interesting video. I really like your daily life content!

Wondered this groceries part and why Japanese beef reder. As fu mi sen se knows within 3hours distance from but i haven't been there so far. Went to too far one America. Should have been on vacations and get stationary and character necessities.
>_-♥️
The color of the beef is because of the lighting of the supermarket. So sometimes I’m surprised to see the the real color😂
In America people leave carts all over the parking lot. Try to pull into a space there's probably a cart needing to be bumped out of the way.
Wow, that seems a little dangerous 😅

Grapes!!!! So expensive.
They are brand grapes, so they are much more expensive than other grapes. But anyway grapes in Japan generally expensive
