I like how you've got "Mid Suffolk Light Railway" written on the sign board where the name of the fire brigade would normally be. It's a nice touch.

I think the term Green Goddess was coined during the fireman's strike in the late '70s or very early '80s, when military equipment and equipment retained for civil defence use in the time of war, such as the Green Goddesses, crewed by military personnel were the only fire equipment the public would see for some time. My father was part of the military crew on one of these while he was posted as an instructor at a local naval establishment in the final period of his service...
A lot of AFS GGs went back after their service with the painted bell now brightly polished as, in the services and particularly the Navy, if something is brass then it must be polished and it WILL be polished, a common punishment detail for people who had committed minor infractions of regulations..
At my father's base, they had an answer for the inconvenience of accessing the driver and vehicle commander's seats. They had pedestals of scaffold either side of the appliances so that the front seat crew could go in through the side windows, as they wouldn't be wearing breathing apparatus, and the crew would access the cabin via the side doors...
Another quirk of the AFS beasts was that a lot of them were fitted with Geiger counters on the dashboards. These were pretty sensitive instruments, especially fairly early versions, and being fitted in a harsh-riding, vibratory and rarely used vehicle was less than ideal for keeping them in pristine condition, with the results that, when the strike came round and the equipment was needed, the meters were rather temperamental. My father recalled an occasion when they were called out. As the Goddesses were not fitted with any emergency lighting or siren system that would have been current at the time then they would be accompanied by police vehicles, if any were available for that duty, or military police vehicles as they often were fitted with emergency equipment. My father was riding in the Naval Provost escort vehicle when he suddenly noticed the Goddess behind him throw out the anchors, come to a relative screeching halt for one of them and the crew complete an emergency exit definitely not in Naval order. It transpired that, with the jiggling as the vehicle had gone along the road, the Geiger counter had turned itself on and gone completely nuts, which had rather unnerved the crew. The driver of the Provost Landie went and had a look in the cab and came back telling everyone "don't worry about that, them things are complete shite..." Which was perfectly true, it was just that the information that those meters were totally useless hadn't been passed on along with the vehicles. When you're in the military and a Geiger counter starts going mad then you are rather taught to react to it as situations are rather less than ideal, particularly if you're a submariner, hence the reaction from the crew. My father did discover, however, that the meters would happily pick up the radiation coming off the luminous writing on the dashboard gauges, necessary as, like all military vehicles, they had to be capable of operating under conditions that allowed no light to be emitted upwards to prevent them becoming a target for an airborne enemy. Older vehicles, and, indeed, clocks and watches, had their gauge faces painted with a paint with a radioactive element (Radium if I remember rightly) to achieve the luminosity in the dark. A lot of the people who had the job of painting the faces would die of unpleasant cancers as they would often lick their brushes to get them to the fine point needed for this work, and so ingested sufficient amounts of the Radium to cause them radioactive illnesses. ..
My father's main recollections of the Goddesses was that they were slow, incredibly noisy though they made a great noise in his words, not all that nice to drive and incredibly easy to fall off or out of. The Navy had more cases of broken arms/legs/ankles etc in service during that year than they had had for a long time prior, and a very large amount of them were caused by people falling off or out of a Green Goddess. But they did their jobs well and probably saved a fair few lives during that time...

I love this comment more than I can relate in words: It's incredible information! I can definitely relate to the comment about the Geiger counter too: I'm not military but I come from a family of service members. my father was stationed on a USAF airbase in Germany that was expected to be hit with a rather unpleasant warhead (basically either chemical, biological, or Nuclear) within thirty minutes of the war going hot, then overrun within two hours. his job was to launch every fighter the wing had, then destroy as much of the bases' equipment and infrastructure as they could before getting overrun. They did scramble drills where they had to launch every plane the wing had within so many minutes (I think 15?) in full chemical/bio/radiological gear. Naturally they all had a healthy aversion to Geiger counters.

@@sawyerawr5783 The Cold War was a pretty stressful time to be in the services as, for a lot of that period, a lot of people were pretty certain it was going to become a hot war at any point with almost no warning, and it almost did a few times. I can't imagine what your father's feelings were about his role, knowing that he almost certainly wouldn't get out. But the people all did their jobs to the best of their ability and according to their training despite what their personal feelings and concerns were. It's impossible not to admire their utter bravery...

The name green goddes , in 1976 when I was 13 yrs old we had a water shortage , so the only way we could have water was by water bowsers placed on the local streets that got refilled by these Bedford S types . So the fraze was the green goddes has turned up to fill the water bowsers so we had water for our daily needs. That is when I first heard the term green goddes.

I noticed the thing with the sliding shutters is, at least here in Germany, is the shutters can be ordered lockable, still the fire departments seem to prefer the not locking versions. Maybe it is so you can't arrive at a fire and some guy locked the shutters and you loose valuable time looking for the key...

Two completely different machines simply as they were built as you say for different purposes. The Bedford "Self propelled pump" or now known as Green Goddess, was designed to pump water long distances using 6 inch pipework in the case of Nuclear War. Having pumped water through the 6 inch outlet on the side of the Goddess using flexi pipe, its not the most fun thing to dry off and put away.
The RL was a very basic machine, simply as it was easy to maintain if the country had been bombed, and rugged to get over rubble. There were 4x2 versions of the Bedford RL fire engine made too for the AFS. "The Green Machine" book about the AFS is well worth a read if you are into it (but pricey and rare) for the history. When the AFS disbanded, they went into store and only came out for Firefighter strikes in 1977 and the ones in the 90s/2000s prior to being sold off. That said Suffolk Fire Service borrowed two in the mid 90s for use at field and heath fires due to their ground clearance.
Jupiter on the other hand is a "type B" fire engine which is designed for all domestic fire service needs, the same spec that is used today. New to Norfolk Fire Service, its design meant speed and agility as well as quick response when arriving on scene - neither of which a Goddess can provide :) It has high pressure hosereels, where the Goddess is a mianly low pressure high volume pump.
The term "Red Goddess" was coined in the last countrywide firefighter strike as the Green Goddesses had been sold off and spare normal fire engines were used by the military to provide fire cover.
Remember following Jupiter back from IFF Haverhill to Bentwaters in the car and then getting a drive (pre repaint) along the taxiway, definitely different with the manual box compared to an auto Dennis RS I was used to. The Goddess you have to have a knack with the gearbox and the revs to drive it smoothly!

its really interesting seeing the two design requirements side by side: I mean Jupiter is basically a civil machine, but something for the AFS is more or less going to have to work in the worst of the worst. It's meant to be rugged and able to operate in, well, what could rather comfortably be termed "hell."
Take for example the off-road nature and the ground clearance: I mean in wartime, it's basically a given that your infrastructure is going to be shot apart. arriving offroad might be the only way you get anywhere. and couple that with the need for accessing uncontaminated water supplies (though granted, since by about the mid 50s nobody was stupid enough to use ground bursts, that's easier than youd think...I could ramble here but let me keep it short and simply say that fallout is really only a major concern when you have direct impact explosions) and It's easy to see why the off-road requirement was in place.
Interestingly you still see that out in the Western US a lot, since a lot of areas don't have paved roads. the forest service especially loves offroad vehicles.
EDIT: you can kind of see that with the lockers too. I'd imagine the AFS would have some kind of radiation safety kit, and frankly, they'd just have more stuff anyway, given their required operating environment. you'd need all those separate lockers for everything. Trust me, I've seen USAF radiation safety gear from the same era....it's a lot, and its a mess.

Sounds sweet as a nut to me. But then I'm only 5' into the video 🥴
Dunno whether Green Goddess name comes from, but I think they came to public attention during a long fireman's strike back in the 80's (which as I remember a large majority of the British public was sympathetic towards). This is probably why everyone of a certain generation recognises them.

Would I be right in saying Jupiter had the dreaded DENNIS door disease. The RS and SS were notorious for door rot. Even their successor the Sabre had problems. We called the Sabre the armchair, superb ride and went like a rocket.
I was in the AFS at Uni and you are correct the prime function of the Bedford's was to act as a water relay both for drinking and fire fighting. Our local County Borough had the civilian version Bedford's, so when one of theirs was off the run they "borrowed" ours. The first aid water tank in the Goddess was set quite high and didn't have baffles consequently taking a corner faster than 5-10 mph they would roll over. Birkenhead Borough managed to roll our short wheelbase 4 X4 and our long wheelbase 2 X 4 at least twice.
During one long hot summer appliances from many local authorities on Merseyside were providing mutual aid to Birkenhead to fight extensive grass and woodland fires. After a couple of days of continuous pumping the appliances were breaking down everywhere. The Home Office sent 9 brand new Goddesses from Blackpool airport to assist. They had almost 300 parked up in hangars with less than 100 miles each on the clock.
When the AFS was disbanded most of the Goddesses were flogged off, fully equipped, for......£800 each. I was at at an event at the NEC and they were selling like hot cakes many going to Eastern Europe, Africa and South America. Some municipal brigades were buying them to use as reserve appliances or converting them into specials.
Yellow Goddesses, until more recent times the Republic of Ireland bought mainly second hand UK appliances typically 12-15 years old. They then did on average another 10 years of service. They eventually ended up being painted YELLOW and being passed to their Civil Defence organisation.

Here's an idea if it keeps braking down why don't u take it to a mechanic and get it sorted properly instead of half assing it

    • @lmm
      @lmm  3 года назад

Because if its broken, it doesn't move.
Rather hard to get it somewhere when it's immobile.
