This is the best somogear ngal review to date. It’s a shame about some of the rail clamp tolerances, but people have been finding clever ways to make it secure.
Solid review… sub'd have been using one of these for about two months now…For reference I am using it on a 10.5" running 62 grain…. I have about 350 rounds since I installed and I am not babying it. One of the solutions I found, I milled down the set screw (it sticks out from the NGAL body and will interfere with some light mount situations)… then put a delrin spacer between the clamp and the set screw. It clamps it perfect.. Zero movement of the unit. Two additonal mods I did, I did was replaced the battery retaining cap retention "strap" with one from a real NGAL and it doesn't flop around now. (yes the real diffusers work as well) Second was the O ring in the battery cap… also put some weapon grease on the threads, much smoother operation of the battery cap. I am still holding zero just fine… I re verify it frequently. This weekend I had a malfunction and mortared my AR 3 times very hard on the pavement… still was holding zero. YMMV….
I appreciate you sharing your data point for the good of the group. Glad you’ve had a similar positive experience. So far, so good for me and I will post an update video at some point to share the good, the bad, and possibly the ugly. I’m thinking I may throw in a o-ring to the battery cap for good measure, but wanted to collect in altered results for the initial testing.
There aren't a lot of reviews on the somogear ngal. I appreciate you putting out the content. From the few video reviews that are out there it seems this cheap little China knock off actually works. I'm very interested. Lets face it if you're planning nods and aren't a professional war fighter the cost of an actual unit is hard to justify. You're not kicking down doors. You're going to need ir illumination in the event you're donning nods in a self defense scenario. I think this is pretty practical.
@@kuzadupa185 yes exactly. Thank you. I understand “get what you pay for,” but $2-$4 grand is just ridiculous. For aluminum and wiring and laser lenses you shouldn’t have to break the bank.
Way more in-depth of a video than i have ever seen. Have toed with the idea of getting one, and could recommend this video to those who are actually considering one. Thank you
I've had mine and got around 1100-1500 rounds on it so far and it's holding zero still. I had an introduction to NVG rifle class a couple weekends ago and it held zero all through the class. I'm sure it's only a matter of time bfore it may shit the bed but so far so good.
For the battery lanyard, those get dry and break off of our real peqs/ngals. What we usually do is take a piece of 550 gut and tie it back down in the same grooves. Works well and if you lose that cap, the whole unit is useless
Getting mine in tomorrow, excited to see how good it is for it's price. Another alternative that I have been seeing is the invisiblesight NGAL, their IS-EG NGAL is priced at $480 right now and guarantees zero up to 5.56, but there is a 3 month pre order.
@@4MRRanch I also saw some vids of it under NV and the IR Illuminator looks cheap, in the flooding it has lines of brighter light kinda like old incandescent flashlights, but the illuminator gets way tighter than the somogear NGAL
I brought tons of GBRS risers, unity risers+controllers and surefire lights from taobao. Things selling on taobao are cheaper, won’t need to worry about the copy rights so they can be exactly same like the original, and they are all worked as they should be. Paying $200+ just for a light, even an aluminum CNC rail are insane! I have 3 peq 15 made by fma, together cost me less than $900, they worked on my different rifles from 9mm to 308. Still working properly and holding zero. Thanks for the review, I’ll definitely try the new product. Cheers!
Honestly with those risers, i don't think there'd be any noticeable difference between the real one and the knock off one, it's all basically a solid block of metal, unless they messed up the machining technique to the point that it broke under pressure, it should be all the same
Great content subscribed. Own a somogear peq for over 2 years now and just got the ngal. Have treated me great. Do experience the recoil cut out on my ak but on 556 or 9mm ive had no issues (not on my scar that thing eats everything i put on it)
I will not personally be running this on anything more than 9mm or 5.56, mainly cause ammo costs for the larger calibers takes away the joy of night time plinking. Maybe I’ll try it on my AR 10 just to build some more confidence.. thanks for the sub
Pro tip, tighten tighten and retighten your battery cap. If it’s even slightly loose you’ll get cut out. You think it’s tight? Probably can go another 1/4 turn with your fingers 5 min later. Also, if that doesn’t fix it, carefully stretch your spring about till about 1/8” longer-post stretch. That will guarantee it’s gone
@4MRRanch I did a deep dive into your videos and passed them around to the relevant guys. Quality reviews, and again, thanks for all the time and effort. Subbed.

Mine has the rail fitment issues as well. I just cut a strip of electrical tape and put it over the lug on the laser to eliminate the forward to aft play.
Fortunately I did not have this issue on the rigs I plan to run this unit on, but it is an unfortunate issue and will be luck of the draw for most. In hindsight, I Should have taken measurements so people can predetermine which rail systems will work for them.
My first unit had a similar battery cap issue (flimsy, catches etc). I bought one late July 2024 and the battery retention rubber was several times thicker and felt more durable. It spun a bit easier but I added some graphite dry lube and it now spins freely.
I also have the rail fitment issue on my BCM m-lok rail. The thumbscrew has plenty more to go before bottoming out. It seems the clamp is hitting the square part of the mounting lug (after the threads) before it can fully grasp the rail. When you show the clamp at 5:05, you can see the 2 scuff marks where it's digging in. I considered taking a dremel to the clamp to make a relief cut but for now I threw some 3M VHB tape on the clamp to give it an extra "buffer" while I test it out.
I may play around with it to see if there’s a workaround, but I think your approach may work. I wanted to show the unit as is for the initial video, and will post a follow up video at some point in the near future where I may have made some modifications.
Thanks for the video man. I suppose it is the latest version they announced. I find this unit better than the Peq15, in terms of materials but the illuminator seems not as tight and still has the QC as the clamp, the potential soldering failures and or laser mis allignments. I would wait for the new vcsel holosun they are going to announce in shot show later this january. If not and depending on the price I´d try to get this somo.
Whew! Been checking the Somogear site a couple times a day and guess what. Three days after this video, I got my Somogear NGAK on order. As of now there were 13 in stock
Thanks for doing this man. I have the atpial somogear, and hate how bulky that thing is. Glad I never bought a real one. Was hoping they’d come out with a civi ngal, but this looks like it’ll work for me.
Well done, nice review I'm yet to take mine out for zero test but QD on/off removal has proven it holds zero. I torqued mine to 20" pounds. My vertical adjustment screw doesn't have a positive detent/click to it but i don't think this will effect zero.
This unit sells for 600+ euros in Europe . For that money I bought an Inforce WML gen II with both white and IR illumination coupled with a Holosun LS117IR . Both real firearm tools plus I got some change for ammo . Holosun went for 270 euros and the Inforce for 180 euros ...Still nice video , nice effort . I use the G&P dbal A2 for airsoft training . Very nice unit for 200 euros
I don’t think the inforce would have anywhere near the punch at range that a laser based u it would have. I assume there’s also not a way to synchronize those two devices?
@@4MRRanch true . Don't under estimate the Inforce . For realistic NV shooting ranges ( 90-150 yards ) it's more than enough. And there is always the Holosun LS321R Multi-laser (Red & IR) and IR Illuminator which I believe is more than capable with all the Ngal functions but is a proper milspec device
@@theodoros1126yes the holosun products are great but all their laser aiming modules are low power.. I use a somogear peq15 (latest model) on my mk18 and I absolutely smoke all the CIV “military grade” laser devices of my friends.. it holds zero on a 223/556, it’s solid and for the price tag it worths every penny.
Reminded me since you brought up lasing the camera. As these products get into more people's hands, I highly highly recommend reading up and understanding hazards of lasers and laser safety. Last thing we need is people getting their vitrious humor turned into fried egg at airsoft matches or at the range because they didn't understand their device. Recommend getting some LEPs that are properly rated for the wavelengths of the devices involved.
I personally can’t imagine why somebody would ever use this for Airsoft. Way too strong to ever want to consider pointing at somebody in the name of a friendly game.
thanks for he detailed info! curiosity finally got to me, so I bought one the other day. i own a bunch units - steiner, holosun, and b.e myers. hopfully the somogear doesn't outperform all them. lol
The illuminator is pretty awesome, I just wish it focused a bit more. For this reason my A2 will probably stay on my primary build and the solo will go on my night time plinker
@6:48 is this due to that nut bottoming out on its threads? if so, I think more washers or tape on that section of pic would fix that issue. Still an issue, but just offering a potential solution.
I'm glad goodish lasers like this exist for people that don"t want to spend 4-6k on a laser. However, the existance of this thing makes everyone think my actual L3 NGAL is a fake. Though having said that. There are very few diffrences I can notice between this somogear unit and my L3. The biggest being this replica looks a bit diffrent in color. Well, that and the obvious stuff like the NGAL having a red vis laser.
I think that’s why the red vis version is a popular one. For me, I don’t care so much about being clone correct, I just wanted a bright vis laser and ideally a decent IR unit. If anything, products like these will hopefully put pressure on the laser market to offer more for the money. Also, if you’d be interested in loaning out your real L3 for a comparison, let me know. Shoot me an email at 4mrranch@gmail.com. Insured shipping on my dime, and a “rental” fee for your generosity!
If had mixed results with the Somo PEQs but they always replace them or fix them or whatever they do. The one im using now on a 13.9 has over 2000 rounds on it and the only negative has been that if either laser is in constant on, it goes off when i fire a shot. Not a big deal as i dont use the constant on feature and if im manually activing it, it stays on when firing.
@@4MRRanch I got in very early. The first one was not potted, my fault I think. But I paid the difference and shipping and got a potted one. The 2nd one crapped out after a few hundred rounds and they replaced it without hassle. This one has been hard with just over 2k in about 3 months. It should be noted, I never said it was on a real gun. 🤣 Not sure if that matters to be honest. Turn around times were brutal
I have several somo peqs and a ngal but evolution gear is killing it with their ngal and its guaranteed for actual firearms and water resistant. And if your patient and get it from invisible sight its as good as the real thing but that lead time im 4 months in now but i got the vscell laser upgrade .
@@michaelfranks341 you bought the wrong one it's not invisible sight from evolution gear factory that's the base he builds from . Invisible sight buys there units 50% dones and QCs them and upgrade stuff . The ones from Ali express are not the same nor do they have his warranty they are stealing his name
I’m looking to get into night vision and lasers etc. and am curious, do you see that much laser movement 13:06 when shooting a more expensive unit? I was surprised to see it shake that much, or would that potentially be the laser pr some component of it reacting to the recoil? I thought it shakes more left and right than vertically. Could attribute to the slight drift in zero. Great vid, instant sub from me!
As far as I can tell the laser movement is from the recoil of the rifle itself, since it was braced on a shooting platform on the bottom of the rifle, the recoil impulse followed the path of least resistance (to the left as I am a right handed shooter). This could possible explain the potential gradual shift in zero horizontally over time, but I don't know that I have put enough rounds to assume it has shifted just yet.
I have the peq with 1,000 rounds through it and it’s going strong, but have not collected detailed data and have not left it on the same gun, so can’t say for sure if the zero has held.
Did you contact somogear about the lasers not being co alligned? It does say on the website that they are supposed to be out of the box so maybe you got a dud unit. Also i was pretty suprised that there wasnt any locator/locking lugs in line with the picatinny mount. Some of those would probably tighten up the tollerances with the rail much better.
I still consider them fairly co aligned as they will only be off by about 2” at 100 yards based on the offset I recorded. I’ll have to see if this increases over time. I do wish I would have done the test prior to use to get a baseline measurement, but can’t go back and change that, I can only continue to monitor it.
Good sir, how does one even get a grey market ngal? I hear everyone saying you’ll have the problem of no warranty, but I don’t know how to even have that problem.
If you’re a serious buyer, I can put you in touch with somebody who can source them. But expect a $4-$5k price tag depending on condition and date of manufacture.
Anything that adds equal pressure on the upper and lower part of this clamping piece (the thingy that is pushed down by the nut) will not work! What should work is if you add something to make it cant slightly, basically make the lower part extend further and touch the rail. Like fix something to the lower half of it between the mount and the nut/washer or use a file and remove material on the upper part that interfaces with the unit itself/put sth inbetween there. you could even glue a thin piece of metal to the lower clamping surface. Try a folded piece of a beer can first and then glue it onto the clamp or just hold it there while tightening in order to not alter the mount permanently.
I ordered my NGAL last week (wed or thur I think) and it arrived on tue. Since we are having summer in January (peaked out at 70), I thought I would make some adjustments to the laser(s) to at least get them close to zero'd. I am going for a parallel zero so I have the visible laser just below and a tad to the left of my zero'd ATN X-Sight. Now when I turn on the IR laser, its showing up a good distance below the visible laser. Which laser do you recommend using when I zero the NGAL???
The clamp is oversized for some select rails, ideally it needed to go narrower. Somogear has been in touch since posting this and is actively working on a fix.
Yeah the only potential aftermarket support will be for the real thing, so expect to spend just as much on L3 diffusers/pattern generators as you did on the Somogear unit itself lol
my PEQ15 broke after a year where it mounts up. I got the NGAL and the quality doesnt even make it feel like a Somogear. Somogear realllyyyyyy tried to perfect this product. Id get the NGAL 10/10
This is the aluminum/magnesium alloy KMR that was originally released but discontinued. Stupid lightweight, weight wise it literally feels like it’s make of cardboard, but I think it wasn’t super durable and was then discontinued. Could be out of spec, but I doubt it.
Just randomly check the website every few days. They were in stock a couple days ago so I ordered mine. But if you wait a couple months I’m sure the availability will become better.
I’ve had a good amount of paint immediately peel off the front of mine from simply swiveling the diffuser cap on and off. Not sure if anyone else had the same experience. I also removed that battery cap retainer by mistake and can’t get the fucking thing back on. Likewise had that little tether attached to the plug and like an idiot I cut it off. Not realizing it was there to hold the cap in place when removed.
Well that’s tough. Output wise this will blow the civ A3 out of the water, but the A3 is actually a reliable and proven system. I’ll be running more extensive tests on this, and more reliability data will be available from other users too. This option may be viable, but for now it’s highly unproven.
@4MRRanch I wasn't eluding to specs changing. . . more of a QC issue. Like with any manufacturing, the longer something is made, the better the process is. 10 years in manufacturing is a crazy long time for processes to be refined. I actually just Junked an upper that's been sitting, finally got to building it, and the retention roll pin for the forward assist was crazy off where it should have been. And the company is out of business now.
Only time will tell. This a very surface level test, and was only intended to indicate it might actually be worth our time to play with. I’ll report back in another 500 and 1,000 rounds.
It looks like the Chinese are good at building things, but they just don't have the experience in shooting and testing to refine their gear that well. Or even iterate on their own designs. You guys at 4MR should take out a second mortgage, take a trip over there and set up a small workshop and see what kind of products you could make if you use the existing supplier network there, but tune the products using your shooting and end customer expertise. You could probably take a product off the shelf there, tune it, package it with proper manuals for the US market, brand it with your 4MR name and make some money. You could probably even make L3 blush for charging with they do.
There is a TON of U.S. regulations for producing and selling these kind of devices. Not a headache I’d currently want to deal with. This is a why I believe Somogear markets as Airsoft toys even though they seem to be viable devices.

I did indeed find this useful. So I will indeed be subscribing.
Glad to hear it, thanks for the support!
@@4MRRanch thank you for the testing!
Good video, thanks
Thanks for watching!
@@4MRRanch this was on a “potted” NGAL?
this vid has sold me on this product
More detailed updates to come. I think it’s still preliminary, but this video was intended to show it’s worth our time to test out
Awesome rifle bro, beauty!!
I appreciate that!
Excellent Review!
Thanks for watching. The update review is now available as well.
There's also the Invisible Sight Ngal, for anyone curious about what else is out there.
I will be testing and comparing that one soon
Just bought 2 of them and haven’t had any issues yet.
Glad to hear!
Watch them becoming better than the original in about 3-5 years lol
If the price stays reasonable, I’m here for it
thanks for he detailed info! curiosity finally got to me, so I bought one the other day. i own a bunch units - steiner, holosun, and b.e myers. hopfully the somogear doesn't outperform all them. lol
The illuminator is pretty awesome, I just wish it focused a bit more. For this reason my A2 will probably stay on my primary build and the solo will go on my night time plinker
Looks awesome
So far, it is!
@6:48 is this due to that nut bottoming out on its threads? if so, I think more washers or tape on that section of pic would fix that issue. Still an issue, but just offering a potential solution.
I think the clamping mechanism is being blocked by the NGAL body from being able to get any narrower.
Subbed. Looks like a decent little unit
Much appreciated, and yes so far so good. Future updates to come.
Great video
I’m glad you liked it, thanks for taking the time to watch.
it seems the "looseness" issue on rails you demonstrated, the ones I've seen are on a lot of BCM Keymods.
Looks like the BCM rail spec is to blame
Amazing asmr!!
Only the best for my viewers lol
Nice video man
Much appreciated, thanks for watching.
@@4MRRanch I actually would be interested. I'll shoot you an email.
Everything you said and the set screw, that its a dead give away… but I could care less if someone sees me with a somogear.
someone like you needs to make a video comparing a real one at the same time as the somogear on two identical rifles. That would be awesome
@@nicomuchuelas if somebody would be willing to loan me one, I would absolutely put in the time and effort.
Have you sent yours in to them? Or been sent a new one?
@@4MRRanch I got in very early. The first one was not potted, my fault I think. But I paid the difference and shipping and got a potted one. The 2nd one crapped out after a few hundred rounds and they replaced it without hassle. This one has been hard with just over 2k in about 3 months. It should be noted, I never said it was on a real gun. 🤣
Not sure if that matters to be honest. Turn around times were brutal
What’s the sbr your running in the video? Or rather what’s the rail your running on it it’s so niceee

Did u try adding a washer to the rail clamp,tk see if that helps it tighten down on that bcm rail?
I found that both a washer, as well as reeeeallly tightening the unit both seem to help
@@4MRRanch makes sense. Great review, appreciate the work.
Did you do a review for the peq? I’m really tempted on one of these simply because I love the look the the Peq15
I have the peq with 1,000 rounds through it and it’s going strong, but have not collected detailed data and have not left it on the same gun, so can’t say for sure if the zero has held.
Awesomeeeee sauceeee
Thank you
Did you contact somogear about the lasers not being co alligned?
I think you need to ADD a washer
I’ll try it and will report back.
See my initial post.@@4MRRanch
Is yours a new update? I noticed you have a ring molded into the body for the plug retaining cord. On the website it doesn’t have one in the picture
I honestly am not familiar with versions. I just know it was ordered 12/26/33 and received 1/2/24
Ordered 12/22/23 my unit does not have a ring on the body to retain plug lanyard. It was looped into the battery cap retainer. Red laser version.
If they aren’t very well lined up on your unit, I’d go with the one you’ll use most.
Was your's pretty close to eachother (Vis and IR)???@@4MRRanch
Wouldn't you add another washer?
The clamp is oversized for some select rails, ideally it needed to go narrower. Somogear has been in touch since posting this and is actively working on a fix.
@@4MRRanch duck tape... It's for ducks but whatever..🤣

Yeah the only potential aftermarket support will be for the real thing, so expect to spend just as much on L3 diffusers/pattern generators as you did on the Somogear unit itself lol
How do I get one of these via Amazon? Or go to the website?
Right now you have to go direct to the somo website or paragon Armory site

The build quality is much better on the NGAL, I think this would last longer but will update as round count gets higher.
my PEQ15 broke after a year where it mounts up.

I’ll tolerate the finishes if the performance keeps functioning well

This or steiner dbal a3?

@@4MRRanch That makes sense. It would be funny if you went over there and took over the market with your expertise though.
