- While others hunt for wild animals, D-lab is always on the quest for tubes. My wife stumbled across 5 caddies full! Music to my ear. We had fun looking thru them, eating pizza. What a way to spend a night! A lifetime collection + some mouse houses.
Wow! She hit the jackpot!
Wife, dog, pizza, wine, beer & tubes. The perfect night.
Hay Terry , beautiful Wife and helper ! I believe your a well Blessed man. really nice chocolate brown Lab. too! but those tube catties are a real cool blast from the pass. I think a lot of those puppies were for early colour tv. early 70's really tuff to find anything like this up here anymore. but rare times i bet some appear. you certainly got some beauties there my freind!
When you mentioned the smell, I could imagine it, I love the smell of old tube gear.
Congrats on your 33 years, we are working on 21.
found the same, electronics store with piles of old tubes. right next to an old RCA testing board. cool
get vid ,lol;love your dog.
Awesome find. Wish my wife would bring me a bunch of tubes. Love all your vids. Keep em coming.
Man you guys scored!!!
I love this video. Would love to see more stuff like this in future D-Lab episodes. I'd also love to see more about what tubes you actually end up finding and which ones turned to be in good condition. Keep up the good work!
Um maravilhoso estoque de válvulas para reposição......excelente aquisição......!!!!!!
Great tube find, especially getting all the caddies too. Always a bunch of old TV tubes in with the radio/amp tubes.
Good find! I see a lot of radio & TV tubes there as well.
Hit the jackpot in tubes!!!!!!!!!!
I always like to look at a couple and unlike most people of an agist nature or oftentimes opposite side in the perverse, one can capture a glimpse in a moment by means of a feature or a loss of time as was described in immortality by Milan Kundera, where a woman forgets her age and a smile comes over her, and it is nice to see that come over her face at the beginning of this video. Maybe she’s not just tolerating you like my girlfriend of 10 years. She finally has learned to sort caps and at least recognizes peerless. BUT SHE STILL THINKS A DAMN RELAY IN A TUBE IS A TUBE!!!!
Ps. I really hate the design of those ge cases when the gray flaps are ripped or removed.
It is sad to think I’m likely the last generation to enjoy economically viable tubes unless... see I don’t understand what went wrong with groove tubes and subsequently rch! I went into a six month bout of depression because I won at least one 50-100k of inventory and equipment for only 2k and oh boy friends and big government would have it that every single think that could go wrong did, but man people literally won 8-10 shelves stuffed with tube making
Components still packaged from the clean room and all kinds of other stuff and for all their efforts they failed and it ended up in someone’s hands who has yet to make any of it known. You know they seemed to have all the equipment and people made fun of a couple of single stage vacuumnpumps from harbor freight but I believe they had multistage high industrial grade elsewhere. There was absolutely no reason with the prices at which all of this groove tube 6l6 assembly was gotten that an actual attempt for production even for a short run with a viable good outcome could’ve happened especially if one was to employ help with r&d from a currently successful tube manufacturer. I have made three once in a lifetime discoveries so far and I’m not yet thirty but each time i was either too trusting and let myself be used and duped or my time wasted and or a friend who owed me thousands decided to open a loan for someone who is an absolute jerk for 20k and ruined his credit and fails to let me know til the last minute at which point a cascade of other events leads me to losing what we would normally pay thousands for for pennies on the 100 dollar bill. Let’s say I won’t ever compromise the well being and opportunity of my girlfriend and I ever again for anyone who lives in the world of ostensible satisfaction and demands tangible evidence and never can afford to be put out for a moment but always begs forgiveness and makes one forget that you aren’t responsible for their lack of consideration or appreciation of the difference between joy in the utterance over the realization of a goal. THE TUBE WORLD IS WROUGHT WITH UNDERVALUED AND OVERVALUED AND THROWN AWAY OR MADE INTO ART WITHOUT FIRST... god and what breaks my heart above all is seeing these fully stocked radio stations with amazing mint condition consoles be smashed by teenagers who perceive every priceless item within as valuable as a tv in a back ally way: smash and run. Look at all these lightbulbs and navy submarine stuff. That people are not familiarized with basic technological history and made to value these things that cannot even be reproduced for their cost in manufacture and... okay sorry I’m done. Haha
That was weird... listen to the start of the video when you partner was eating and the dog was drinking.... ha ha !
awesome !
We need to team up your dog with Uncle Doug's Rusty!
Ron Fast Poor Rusty has gone to the great kennel in the sky. Jack may be available.
smart idea wearing those gloves....I tiny shard of glass can easily be picked up in a find like that. Caught one in my thumb the other day... it was very annoying.
Good hunting!
yes my 1941 GE console uses two 6v6GT for the output
Great episode! Thanks for sharing.
Did you find any 12AX7 or EL34's?...... I didn't see any......but, there we're way too many to take it all in.
Thanks man, Nope none of the holy grail tubes. Believe me, I had great expectations.
You could build an amp from the tubes she got and call it " the Marsha " ! Thankz
The guy's a frickin' genius and he's got a hot wife too. Cripes...
You have a big colection tubes! It's for years repairing tube amps. Funny dog also! How long are you collect tubes??? Thanks again for the vid. Grz
Wow, Terry! You won the lottery! Marsha's intelligent, great looking, likes pizza and beer, and finds you TONS of NOS tubes for "Tyoob Amp Theatah!" Plus, she has a bottle of wine at the ready at the sound of a bell! Let's see DICK do that! "Mmmmm, yeahhhh, yeahhhh".
We've got an old electronics shop here in my small town, They've got 100's of old radio tubes in their basement. If you're interested I could put in a word for you.
Hello, Yes, please do
My God !!!
Dude. I want that pizza.
Your wife seems like a nice lady! Brings home tubes and drinks mich ultra! Hey Terry, what type of probes do you need for an oscilloscope to do tube amp repair? Are digital scope useless for tube amp repair?
As for scopes, all will work. I prefer older analog types. Digital type are OK, but sometimes they have a bit of update lag.
D-lab Electronics Thanks for the reply! Love your videos. Are the 10:1 probes you get with entry level scopes suitable for working on 100 watt tube amps?
Yep, thats normally the ones supplied, I use x1 probes
Nice! How do you know what is valuable/useful? I just bought 3 caddies of rca and ge stuff
I am so sad I sold my TV business in 77, 3 tube checkers, hundreds of tubes, lots of test equipment and several dozen tube operated consoles taken in as trade or found abandoned....sigh
True but sad story. Last year I was at the local flea market. I was checking out an old AA5 radio and a guy walked up and wanted to know what I was going to do with it. I told I taught them to sing and talk. He then said- my brother-in-law has a barn full of tubes. They were there when he bought the place. Are they worth anything? I said "they can be. It depends on what they are. He could try putting them on eBay". He said, nah... I was just wondering. Did I ask his name or location. Oh no... I just paid for my radio and left. About a block away I suddenly realized... he said barn full of tubes... duh... it's a haunting memory...
VideoKarma website might be interested in those 17V tubes
Thats the story here. My wife picked up this lot. There is a house full. So far, I have retrieved enough to make the haul worth it. Looks like 50% are scrap. The caddies are worth the price paid.
I've seen those caddies go pretty high on eBay. I saw quite a few that looked interesting. Those to 6L6's especially. Nice haul. Does your wife have a sister :)
Yes, 2, only 1 is available, however you would have to go to Colorado
LOL Just my luck. I moved home from Colorado in the early 90's
I met my wife while stationed at FE Warren AFB, Cheyenne, WY. She was a Domino's pizza delivery girl.
6EU7 ?
Terry I have a question for you and hopefully you can give me some insight on this, what it is is I have an old am tube radio it's a Motorola and the back of the radio is missing and the usually taped on glued on paperwork that gives you the tube description and layout is missing, the tube in the radio that is not lighting up at all has all the markings on the side of it are gone or rubbed off, so how can identify what the tube is, any help would be appreciated.
Interesting...so out of the entire collection, how many of those tubes can be used in amps?
Well, most are radio type tubes. For amps, maybe 20%. 50% will end up as scrap
so what does scrap for tubes mean? just broken up or is there some sort of recycling for them and the components?
As tubes get harder to find, and more expensive, you will see lots of "innovative" ideas show up with series set, TV and radio tubes. My humble advice: save them all. Take care!
That's an interesting idea. So with pending tube shortages, smart electronics guys like D-lab may build tube amps with different circuitry to use the tubes that are available that may not work in todays technology.. could produce new and different tones. Makes sense to me.
Lol
Talk about You Tube...LOL
What did all these tubes cost you if I may ask.
I believe she bought the lot for 150
D-lab Electronics
Wonderful, Good looking Lady there.
Thanks man, It took me a long time for her to get interested in the hobby. Now, she is always searching out finds! We have been married for 33 yrs
D-lab Electronics
33 you should be proud... Cheers....
D-lab Electronics Wow, I thought she was your daughter! Make a 20 watt two channel amp with salvaged digital effects from some amp you have, and a 12 inch speaker, huh, huh! Great as always. Thankz
god damn.... got a 12ax7a and a 12bh7 ya wanna sell?
RobTapps88 Myyyyyy... Preeeeeciooouus 😂
