Ducati Monster 821 | Removing Rear Brake Pedal Assembly

  • Bolt that holds rear brake pedal got loose and this is the procedure to get to it, which requires removal of the whole right-hand foot controls assembly.
    Tools needed:
    Socket wrench
    14mm socket
    15mm (x2) sockets
    24mm allen or 5/8 nut with matching socket
    6mm allen.
    This procedure is also useful in order to get to the rear brake light switch spring.
    NOTE: I have purposely omitted torque specs due to me not wanting to be blamed if someone didn't do the procedure correctly. Download the service manual and those will be listed there.

    Thx for the vid. If it’s loose, don’t ignore it and tighten it ASAP. Vibration will cause it to loose further and my brake pedal fell off while riding today. Had to walk 500m back to find it.

    I own a 2019 M821. I didn't need to remove the whole cradle or use any tools outside of Allen keys & 10mm wrench. By moving the exhaust, loosening battery shroud and heat guard had enough access to place a 6mm Allen key too access the pin pedal, which also needed replacing, to remove and install new brake control lever.

    thank God for hold fast films and the perfection in explains and detailing these how to's. I am mechanically inclined but lack confidence in tearing into my 16 monster dark...thank you so much..
    also, I did adjust the gear change shifter down and would appreciate a little help with adjusting the rear brake pedal...maybe a quik how to video ?

      Thanks! As i'm going through maintenance etc I'm trying to document it and hopefully get people interested in DIY. I know guys are scared of this but it's not hard at all.

      +Hold Fast Films Scared, no. I do pretty much everything on my bike except for any engine work. Slowly purchasing the right tools and starting to record the process.

      A town just west of Toronto Canada. It was getting nice but we had a small snow storm last night and 2 more snow falls coming this week. :( Been itching to get the covers off the bike.

    This was great! I'm looking at installing a set of rearsets on my 821 and couldn't figure out how to get that 24mm bolt off.

      +Hold Fast Films I've seen a few videos around with a massive socket that actually fits that thing, but I'm sure using that nut is a hell of a lot easier to track down and much cheaper.

      LOL yup! Quick trip to Home Depot and few cents later, you have a tool! I found an answer in some german forums. I could not understand anything they were talking about but man those dudes were doing some cool rearset mods. If I find it again, I'll link it here.

      +draquine I couldn't think of anything that would fit and didn't want to experiment and in process strip that bolt. I found something on some German forum about that and then someone mentioned on ducati.org too. Really cool stuff!

      draquine u can use also 16mm nut which is couple mls larger than 5/8 abd itll be more snug inside.

    mine had same problem. i noticed it yesterday coz the brake light was always on. i noticed small amount of play when moving the brake lever. ones i pulled correctly the brake like work again.
    good vid tho. very helpfull.
    gonna do mine tommrrow.

    Hey! Very useful vid - thanks. Had the exact same issue with my 821 which was keeping the rear brake light permanently on...
    I’m sure you know that Ducati love to torque everything but I can’t find the correct settings for this pedal assembly anywhere. Have looked at the online servicing manual that garages use but still no luck.
    Are you able to help, please? Really appreciate any help you can give me

    Hello sir, I have a Monster 1200, I think that this center screw is the same, but are you sure that is 5/8 or 24 MM Allen. Thanks

      Should be whatever it says in the video. It's not an exact fit but it does the job and I would not spend money on a real tool for this. It would be a total waste.

    Hi, congratulations for your videos! I'd need some advice if you can. I should replace the rear brake cylinder of my Monster 821abs because after several kilometers the pedal goes all the way down and i'd like having an efficient rear brake. How can I do to drain my rear brake? Do I have to do something on ABS? Can I empty it simply by connecting a hose to the rear caliper and suck the brake fluid with a syringe? Please, could you give me some advice? Thank you.

      Sounds like you might have some air in your system but that's hard to diagnose over internet. If you're not sure what to do, I'd suggest taking it to the shop but if you want to do it yourself, look up how to bleed the brakes properly. You have to replace the fluid without introducing air. There should be plenty of tutorials on RUclips. It doesn't have to be a Ducati. Good luck man.

    thanx for vid bro!!! lil advice try keep your back ground music just little lower in volume people wanna hear what your saying clearly and in the beginning of vid it was kinda same volume as your voice.. so just little constructive criticism!!! :) thanx again for your video now i know a way to get that crazy sized start bolt out!!!!!

    It seems like you do alot on your monster yourself instead of bringing it to the dealer and I'm making the assumption that you change your own oil and oil filter. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have a monster 821 as well and wanted to know this: does changing your own oil and oil filter void the warranty? I changed mine myself because I can't stand the techs at my dealership. They just try to get another dollar.

      +gflinski Yea I do everything that I can on the bike myself. Not a fan of any dealership I've ever come across, especially the one where I bought my Monster. Anyway, changing oil should not void your warranty as long as you are using oils and filters that are recommended. Now, that's a vague statement but if something was to go wrong with the engine, dealer would have to prove that oil you used caused the issue. They would have a hard time with that one. The way I see it, if the dealer and/or Ducati voided my warranty because I changes the oil myself, I would never go back to that dealer and would never buy another Ducati. And would make sure they knew about it along with everyone I know.
      One thing I've seen people recommend is to keep receipts and records, just in case. Not sure how effective that would be in case you need to prove something but it would be better than nothing.

      I appreciate your reply. I am in the same boat as you. I don't like the dealership near me working on my bike. I use the oil and filter specified in the manual so I have nothing to fear. Just because its a Ducati doesn't make it too special to work on. I feel like people treat them differently just because of the stigma. I just like changing my own oil because its the easiest thing to do when you have the tools. Anyways I think I will stick to doing that. I had a KTM once and the dealership would try to make me pay for repairs that were not caused by wear and tear and I had to fight a couple times to finally get them to cover it. They tried to tell me the oil was dirty and wasn't changed often enough when they were so full of it because I actually changed it between 2,000 and 2,500 miles. It shouldn't be like that. Anyways, thanks for your videos man!

      gflinski They will pull all kinds of crap. I do everything myself for those same reasons - I don't trust them and I like doing it.

    so what's the trick to removing the 24mm bolt on the clutch side ? I ask because I'm attempting geckoracing rearsets install and that 24mm bolt keeps turning so I loosened other side (brake side) but no luck, seems that swing arm shafts is holding it in place. should I hold brake side and try and loosen it ? I almost removed swing arm shafts before I realized that was not the way to do it...instructions I got are loosely translated to English and make no sense...I'm assuming it's being held on by the shaft...any ideas ?

      Are you talking about the top-most 15mm nut with shaft that goes through to the other side? If so, you need to hold both ends. Otherwise, it will just spin. If you are really talking about 24mm nut then I am at a loss and not sure what is happening there.

      its the 24mm ones...I can remove the 24mm bolt from the brake side easily butt the clutch side bolt spins with the shaft..

      davey Boy Oh gotcha. I have not had to remove the other side but I guess you'd have to do it one by one.

      Hold Fast that's what I figured too, but it keeps turning with the shaft, I believe it is seized on there or just too tight cause I hold the brake side bolt but it loosens as I turn the clutch side bolt which is how I determined it's too tight, only thing I can think of is either it's a reverse thread or buy another swing arm shafts and use it to tap the original through but I'm in no rush since it's winter here in PA...also , geckoracing rearsets offer no real instructions so I have time to figure it out...thanks for replying..

      I'm not sure if there is any calibration that can be done. It's just a basic on/off switch. You can see where the switch is toward the end of the video, where I point out location of switch spring.
