September of '91, Richfield Coliseum in Cleveland... Bruce was with the Dead and killing it. 3 of the best shows I saw.

Jerry was inspired by Hornsby. He had that little extra juice when Hornsby played with them.

My sister worked with concert musicians for years and said she "fell in love" with two of them, Elvis Costello and Bruce. She said every night he would take some time backstage to call his children and talk to them lovingly.

Bruce Hornsby is an amazing musician, and an even better person. Seen him umpteem times, including the show he mentioned at Buckeye Lake, Ohio, and a few of the shows where he was in The Dead. Had sixth row at the Spectrum on St. Patty's Day 1992, right in front of Jerry, and the first thing I see Jerry say, reading his lips, is "I've got a problem". Uh oh. Bruce was right next to him, and all night they were struggling with issues. Bruce played a solo on his accordion, and got almost no response from the audience, and he and Jerry looked at each other and shrugged. And so it goes sometimes. But most nights, it was MAGIC.

When Bruce would pop off that Jack Straw line with gusto and a smile, "Cut down a man in cold blood, Shannon,Might as well be me MEEEEEEEEE"!!!....the place would absolute erupt. Especially with that grand piano getting attacked. Wowwy, I get chills.

I loved the Bruce era (minus the accordian lol)....he and Jerry had a thing. I saw Bruce do a free show in my hometown Grand Rapids Michigan when he was an unknown newbie on the music scene during his debut album tour. And then some years later he winds up playing with the Dead. What! Didnt see that one coming! Life is beautiful and strange sometimes. NFA⚡️💀🥀

I met Uncle Bruce in Italy when he was warming up for Huey Lewis and the News. I watched him first and then when Huey Lewis was playing Uncle Bruce was standing in the audience and I was one of the only people there who spoke English so I went up and was talking to him. I was not a Deadhead yet but I remembered that. It must have been 86 or 87...

I knew Bruce when he played local gigs in Virginia in 1978. I was living in Germany in the mid 80s and went to a concert in fall of 1986 where he was the opening act for Huey Lewis. I had security send a message back stage and Bruce and drummer Molo remembeered me and came out and I got to go back stage for the concert. He is the real deal.

Bruce's band days go back to the early 70's. In fact I heard some material when he was in college with a crew that did Playing in the Band. They tried to stretch it out as well, but you could tell, Bruce was a DeadHead before they asked him to join Laguna Seca. What a score for him. Nice fella too.

Love Mr Hornsby, caught him with the Dead, 9/22/91 at Boston Garden, then again at Old Orchard Beach for early Further Festival. Then recently he played about a mile from my house at a little place called Indian Ranch on the MA./CT. Line a few years ago with Los Lobos opening and it was a great show with tons of Dead stuff from both bands. The place is small and I stood right next to Bruce as he waited to take the stage, I wasn't 4' away from him and MAN IS HE TALL!!

I met Bruce Hornsby 2 times. The 2nd time I met him he actually stole my seat when I went to get a beer at great woods amphitheater further festival tour in 1998. It was in between acts, so when we came back to our seats he was sitting there and we were like whoe! Bruce Hornby stole our seats. So we all sat down and shot the shit with him 😊 I told all about the one specific show when I saw my 1st darkstar tripping balls and he was like " cool man, I'm glad you enjoyed it " super cool dude.

I followed them on the summer of '91 tour. Great shows and (different) sets 🙂 a great body of work from Jerry and Bob (IMO), and a great life adventure I still talk about whenever I reminisce. He certainly isn't Brent, but I loved what he added to the mix and the fact he was willing to step into that role and follow such an icon on keys but that's just the way it is... Thanks Bruce!

I loved that Bruce was able to back up Vinny when he was up and coming. Unfortunately i think Brent had started to come apart by this time and the Dead were trying to get ahead of the curve and have a backup plan just in case they lost him. I mean from what Parrish, and Billy, Mickey say, Brent was turning into a major basket case. With the divorce, and his manic depressive tendancies, I mean who could blame them. The 1986 Brent Meltdown in Berkeley probably scared the bejesus out of everyone. I mean i am sure it was nice for them to have calable musicians opening for them, and to add new light but it almost seemed like a premonition of what was to come. Glad Bruce is family, miss the heck out of Brent and Vinny. That "Hot Seat" is no joke. Even Dark Star Orchestra's original keyboard player died of a heart attack in 2005 or so. Even the cover bands cant get away from it. Tom Constantan is the only one that has survived the Hot Seat, along with Chimenti(Knock on Wood)....Edited for spelling. The spell correct has a mind of its own now.

I think the piano being louder in the mix with Bruce changed the musical dynamic, but I think Jerry appreciated another lead to take the load off. I would call Bruce's stint essential to the band, but I am glad it wasn't permanent. Although I wasn't over-fond of Vince's playing.
