Just take a look history of Balkans Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Albania... There is no example of peaceful life in those coutries. Majority always triedxto convert minority. In some cases it was resistance like in Turkey with Armenians, Greeks, Kurds and Assyrians. But at the end they all were victims of genocide and was turkified. In Greece Turks were that stayed turn into Greeks. Albanians in Greece have Greek names. Serbs and Montenegrins feom Albania was forced to take Albanian names and it was forbiden for them to learn serbian language. In theory that idea sound wonderfull. But it will never happend in real life. Me in early and mid 20s I belived in that. Now when I am in mid 30s I realised how delusional I was.

    During the 1880s, there was the idea of uniting Romania and Bulgaria in a state, which sympathized after the war of 1877, but this disturbed Russia, which threatened the Romanian king Carol I with war, the negotiations being stopped. After that he started to put the fuse between Romanians and Bulgarians using Dobrogea. Dobrogea at that time, an underdeveloped region with a majority Turkish population, was shoved down Romania's throat at San Stefano instead of Bessarabia (Bugeac), a much more prosperous region at that time with 3 large ports. Romania's merit is that it developed it and Constanța became an important port on the Black Sea.

    The balkan federation is one of the few revolutionary ideas that would have probably saved europe from being under u.s. / british / turkish / etc. regimes that reign, still until this day. Back when Rigas Ferraios (late 1700s) was proposing this idea, he was considering greeks, slavs, albanians, muslims, romanians etc as being parts of the hellenic nation, as, the only thing existing as a national identity in the region, back then was that all these people were opposed to the ottoman empire and rebeling against the local rulers who were under the sultans finger.

    • @arbendit4348
      @arbendit4348 Месяц назад

      The Bulgarian national identity always existed, and we always saw ourselves separate from Serbs, even during the Ottoman occupation, this has been documented many different times. As well the Ottomans themselves considered as different even though they did not consider Macedonians different from Bulgarians. I think a Balkan Confederation of Sorts can occur between Bulgaria and Serbia based on the Orthodox Christian faith, and common interests. If Bulgaria helps Serbia reunify with Kosovo and Republika Srpska in Bosnia, and Serbs relinquish their influence over the Macedonian political leadership and help us unify with them.

    Arguably the biggest proponents of a Balkan Federation were the Macedonian revolutionaries from the end of 19th/beginning of 20th century. Their ultimate ideal was a supra-national "Switzerland of the Balkans" Macedonia within a broader Balkan Federation. That was seen as the only viable and logical solution for the "Macedonian Question" given the complex ethnic and geo-political situation of Ottoman Macedonia.

    • @porterhouse937
      @porterhouse937 Месяц назад +5

      To be more precise the ideal was popular among the Slavic (sometimes calling themselves "Bulgarian") Macedonians and the Makedono-Vlachos (Macedonian Vlahs) with Albanians from time to time supporting the idea between their chaotic revolts before the Balkan Wars.

      @@BalkanOdyssey_ Thanks, with all due respect I found it underwhelming. You did absolutely no justice to the magnitude of the Macedonian revolutionary movement (IMRO), which I can honestly say at the very least was the most massive revolutionary movement in the Balkans in the period adjusted for population, estimating that 1 in 10 Macedonians were involved in some capacity with IMRO. Producing thousands of individuals who's understanding of geopolitics, diplomacy and ideology still baffles me when I see how unimpressive modern Macedonians are.
      The unique ethnic and geo-political situation of Macedonia at the time, which was perfectly well understood by the revolutionaries, uniquely dismissed any ethno-nationalist ideas and promoted ideas of solidarity between the various ethnicities as the only viable solution, that was again uniquely understood among the left leaning and right leaning factions of the organisation. Even those who identified strongly as ethnic Bulgarians, were willing to forego their ethnic identity because they understood an independent and unified Macedonia was the best solution for everyone living in it, as opposed of the country being carved up and the people ending up in as impoverished backwater provinces of the surrounding central governments.

      @@BalkanOdyssey_ As a parting thought, I will leave you with two statements made by arguably the most "far right nationalist" scarecrow Macedonian revolutionary, which is no longer covered in Macedonian history books courtesy of their Serbian overlords. If the most far right nationalist had these ideals, I can only imagine what were the ideals of the others more centrist or left leaning revolutionaries:
      1:
      We want Macedonia for itself, under its own flag, with its own coin, army, church and politics - in short - a united, independent Macedonia. This has been and remains the ideal of our people.
      In order for Macedonia to flourish, one cannot ask that Greeks, Bulgarians, Albanians, Romanians, etc., to melt. And solidarity and equality between nationalities is needed. That is why we, who are making the biggest sacrifice with conviction (by refusing to join Bulgaria, even though we are Bulgarians), raise our voice in protest against all falsifications of history, of the people's past, of well-known facts. We remain until the end defenders of truth, justice and freedom, both today and in the future - Independent Macedonia.
      ----------
      2:
      "Macedonia, separated economically, could have been better than any other Balkan country. It could have fed a population three times larger than its own. It could have developed great economic power. Its population is considered the most alert and enterprising on the Peninsula without a doubt, a high material culture could have been developed in Macedonia, and the achievements in the spiritual field would not have been below those of the other Balkan countries.
      An independent Macedonia would have been larger in territory than Serbia before the Balkan War.
      While Serbia had 43,303 sq. km., Macedonia had 65,000 sq. km.
      For the Balkans, an independent Macedonia would have meant a guarantee of peace and progress. For Europe, this would also mean a guarantee of peace.
      For Macedonia itself, its freedom and independence would be a reward for centuries of suffering and countless sacrifices, apart from the fact that freedom and self-government are also its right.

    The thing about the Tito/Stalin split was that the measure of distrust wasn't anything new and had been a fear that Tito had since the days of WW2. It didn't help that one of Tito's inner circle was a spy for the USSR and had actually planned to cross the border at a point that Tito had intercepted. Tito also after the failure to induct Collectivization in the Balkans, he recieved a trade agreement with the U.S. (mainly wheat) and begun the start of taking in foreign money as long as Tito opposed the influence of the U.S.S.R, not saying this was a direct reason, but Tito knew how to play both the Soviet Union and U.S. against another while getting Yugoslavia the financial aid it needed.

    Yugoslavia was a country, as some historians like to say with the right to say, a country that was held with a firm hand first by King Alexander and then by Tito. The country itself had areas and peoples who had unprecedented differences in economic, social and political terms. There was a huge difference in terms of civilization between, say, Celje and Djakovica. Heaven and earth. For example, our famous scientist Jovan Cvijić in his famous work failed to somehow culturally connect Slovenes with other peoples. I think he devoted 5.6 pages to it, giving only a brief history of the Slovenes. And nothing else. Although there was someone who even participated in Versailles and was part of our delegation. The second problem of our disintegration was our, so to speak, exceptionality and specialness in relation to other socialist countries. It is true that it led to enormous progress and achievements in the field of culture and art. This was expressed so much that even in the Czech Republic and the Poles, who were on a much higher cultural level, they saw us as vanguard. Those good things are the offspring of nationalism and the desire of republican elites for their empire.

Also a part of the pact was the line that states "if a Balkan state aids a foreign state in an attack on another Balkan state, the pact would intervene against them. What he meant by past glories is more likely the maximum territorial extent of the Bulgarian and Serbian Empires. I just want to point this out, since you seem to imply that he did not want Bulgaria to unify with Macedonia which you yourself have in the past labeled as an example of "irredentism" or "greater Bulgaria", when it is neither and is just a unification of the Bulgarian people which is a view that Karavelov wholeheartedly supported.

      To put it simply, the reason why countries of the Balkans hate each-other is because when they gained autonomy from the Ottomans they were turned into client states for the Great Powers. This meant that as a Balkan nation you could gain much more by asking your sponsor for support in a war against your neighbor than by having good diplomatic relations with them. This idea appeared at first during the Serbo-Bulgarian war where the people did not understand why they were at war yet the Serbian king insisted that it was neccessary. This mentality was fueld by the elites for decades and unfortunately carried down to ordinary people of the Balkans

    This can never happen, though, it might be a nice pipe dream. If the Slavic peoples of Yugoslavia couldn’t get along, what makes anyone think that a peninsula with diverse people, languages and religions could get along? The immediate question would be how will this Balkan State be governed? By whom? How would you elect the representatives? It’s a mess.
    You may say that Italy was fragmented and was unified, but there’s a huge difference between the italic peninsula and the Balkan Peninsula. The Italian peninsula’s regions all speak some variant of Latin and have a common religious and cultural identity more or less. It is not at all the same in the Balkans. One may argue that there is perhaps a common Byzantine tradition among the Orthodox peoples of the Balkans, but there is no common language, cultural or ethnic identity.
    As I said earlier: if the Slavic people of Yugoslavia couldn’t get along, there’s no way that you can unite the Balkans with so many other linguistic, ethnic, religious and cultural identities. Maybe a loose federation could be possible, though.

I experience my Balkans as 1 entity, because i feel including Serbians and Albanians are actually extremely similar in every single way there is but language and even language sounds different but i came to conclusion its actually led by same logic. To me Balkan Union is only way of entire Balkans actually developing its own independence and prospering. Anything else creates conflicting results. Balkan to the Balkans is the only way, but must see downfall of nationalistic views and this will probably happen in 150 years from now in my calculation.

  • @startledhamster
    @startledhamster Месяц назад

    As wheel of time keeps turning, this will happen sooner or later. This goes specially for Orthodox countries in the Balkans such as Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and Montenegro. Of course Hungary are honorary Slavs so they will always be welcome. Basically EU is slowly crumbling and if/when it starts falling apart, these countries will feel the need to join hands in order to make sure that bigger nations/empires won't start picking them one by one. Not to mention that most of european trade goes through Balkans, and most of oil reserves of EU are in Balkans. So economically this would be a powerhouse - hence west will do everything in it's power to prevent this from happening

      @@BalkanOdyssey_ I mean most plausible scenario for uniting balkans is along religious and cultural lines. Even though Croats are mostly slavs, they see themselves as part of the west and would rather join Italian sphere of influence. Bosnia and Albania would be worried that their cultures and religions would be in danger so they wouldn't be interested (note that Albania has separatis movements in Montenegro, Macedonia, Greece and Serbia/Kosovo), and I doubt that Turkey would be welcome as long as Istanbul is Turkish. Greece and Hungary are already not slavic but they might be interested, and that's all of the balkan countries. But generally speaking, there is nothing wrong with creating countries around people groups. Germanic peoples have Germany. Italian people have Italy. Franks have France, Irish have Ireland, English have England etc. We've all seen how melting pot experiment worked out in the west. Due to mix of so many cultures and religions it's super easy to divide people and use them for whatever political agendas. We can also see what's going on in France, Germany, UK, USA, most of them are on the brink of civil war, and why? If they remained as majority in their own countries, these conflicts wouldn't be happening in their streets now. So there is more than 0 reason not to have certain countries join.

    34:02 Once again you are being dishonest. The reason the Yugoslavs rejected a Yugoslav Bulgarian federation, was because they didn't want Bulgaria to be equal to Yugoslavia in such a relationship and wanted complete control over Bulgaria under Tito. This is why they rejected the agreement, which was actually to the detriment of Bulgarian interests anway, but they still chose to reject it nonetheless, wanting Bulgaria as just another province, while Bulgaria gives up the entire Pirin region to Macedonization efforts.
    Also it was Stalin and Tito that pushed for a Balkan federation between Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. You lie when you say that agreements between Dimitrov and Tito happened without the Soviet knowledge, since it was the Soviet Union which ordered Dimitrov to give up Macedonia in the first place in order to achieve a Balkan federation. There is even famously a note from a speech which Dimitrov made, talking about the aspirations of the people of Macedonia, the initial draft called them "Bulgarians" but then that was scratched out with a pen in favour of "Macedonians", as those were the instructions that he received from Moscow.

    • @BalkanOdyssey_

      It looks like Bulgarian nationalism, just like the Serbian one, persists and will not cease under a socialist context. I never said that Tito was not a buerocrat, I never implied that their plan or proposal was perfect, but it was by any and all means better and more prefferable to everyone opposed to the split that happened eventually. Also, "Just another province" in what? In a federation of equal and self-determined nations where Bulgaria would be in the majority together with Sebia.
      How is it even possible to keep regurgitating the same old useless reactionary points in Macedonians while talking about developing socialist socil relations? Is it so hard to see how incredibly reactionary it is and contrary to all notions of self-determination or progress?
      Edit: I am only now realising that you have nothing to do with Marxism and are a conservative nationalist through and through. Damn, that was a waste of energy

    • @arbendit4348
      @arbendit4348 Месяц назад +1

      @@BalkanOdyssey_ 1. It is not nationalism to suggest that Bulgarians should be in charge of Bulgaria. This is a basic prerequisite. Ask yourself, what did Yugoslavia offer Bulgaria in terms of actual tangible benefits in exchange for joining this so-called "federation". They take land from Bulgaria in Macedonia, and they engage in Macedonization of said population, Bulgarians also now have no say in their own foreign policy and international affairs being under the sway of Tito of his party comrades. Bulgaria loses any and all semblance of sovereignty in that situation and gains nothing in return. A Bulgarian-Yugoslav federation maintains Bulgarian sovereignty and influence over its own affairs in exchange for this Union. However Tito wanted total control over Bulgaria and so he refused. It really is that simple, although you refuse to recognize this.
      2. Bulgaria was a sovereign country even within the context of the Eastern Block with its own foreign and domestic policy. What was the foreign and domestic policy of for example Slovenia or Macedonia within Yugoslavia? The answer is, that there was none, and therefore those were not sovereign states, and indeed were just provinces. Imagine this unification did happen as Tito envisaged it. What was going to be the result? Bulgarians joined the Communist party of Yugoslavia, but because all of it's elite positions are already held (mostly by Serbs and Croats) there would be no Bulgarian participation in important positions for at least 2 decades until the current cadre retires. If it was a Bulgarian-Yugoslav Confederation then Bulgarians would actually be able to influence the future of the Union successfully rather than being pushed out in favor of the already established Yugoslav bureaucracy.
      3. Is something really a reactionary point if it is the truth? Back when the idea of Bulgaria joining Yugoslavia was on the table, Georgi Dimitrov brought in professors and educators from Macedonian Yugoslavia along with textbooks that completely denied any Bulgarian character of the Macedonian population in Pirin. They also engaged in name changing of people to add the "Ski" after family names rather than the usual Bulgarian "Ov". This is just a historical fact. The only reason why the Bulgarian population in Pirin does not consider itself ethnically Macedonian today was because thankfully this Macedonization program ended after the Yugoslav/Soviet split.
      4. I am a progressive social nationalist, not a conservative. I admire the Eastern Block as far it came to preserving the national identity of it's states and nations. Something which did not happen in the capitalist West. You however seem to oppose nationalism in all it's variants regardless whether it is under socialism or not. You would be better off openly admitting you are Trotskyite, since this is the only line which rejects any semblance of patriotism or patriotic feeling like you do.

It was the Yugoslav policies which pivoted either to America or the Soviet Union depending on what was beneficial to their own personal interests at the time, which pushed themselves away from the Soviet Union. The Yugoslav administration is by no means perfect or any less buerocratic than the USSR's. The point is that the clash between the two buerocracies, the Soviet one being bigger and more influential, caused a damaging crack in the Eastern Bloc and significantly diminished socialism's chances of prevailing.
      I am not a Titoist as I am not a Stalinist and never will be either, but looking at the conflict simply through the lens of Marxist-Leninist principles, the USSR wronged Yugoslavia because of small and minute disagreements and blew them out of proportion.
