Good video. I would like to mention a couple of things. You can in fact store imitation maple syrup indefinitely. It contains sugar/high fructose corn syrup. The other ingredients are preserved by them. My wife and I just tried some plain Mrs. Buttersworth that was 12 years old and it tasted as good as just bought. Vanilla and other extracts are tinctures. Meaning they have a smal amount of alcohol in them. Also remember that sugar can be used as an antibiotic. Sugar packed in a wound can keep infection at bay. And Vinegar needs to be the high % type as it will hold up longer. And one other item that I wouldn't consider a forever food but for 10-20 years is Canned meat products. We have eaten them that were 12 yearspadt the expiration date and they were as good ad newly purchased would be.. I've been doing this stuff for over 40 years, long before it was ever called prepping. It was a good video for sure. Thanks and good luck on your endeavors.
Put in a couple of tablespoons in a clogged toilet and wait a couple minutes. Follow with 1-2 cups vinegar and wait 2-3 hours. Follow with boiling hot water to flush. I don't think iodine causes salt to go bad; the iodine just breaks down and becomes less viable. If you have a sinus infection, boil distilled water, let it cool to slightly warm. Take one cup water to ¼ teaspoon UNIODIZED salt and mix. Administer drops to your sinuses with an eye dropper. Disclaimer: consult your doctor if this is okay for you.

Fun facts: As you mentioned, salt was used in ancient times as workers' pay. That's the source of the word 'salary', and the terms "being worth your salt" and "(they're the) salt of the earth" refer directly to how valuable salt is.
Eric Pardon me for using your comment, just wanted to add one more information to make it all complete. “Sal” means salt in latim, that’s where “sal-ary” comes from.
@@Thesamurai1999 it's price diminished as new mines were discovered, production methods improved, and distribution costs went down in the early 20th century. It's value hasn't gone down. I recommend spaghetti for your noodles. It's straight shape make it the least bulky to store and carry because there isn't much air between the noodles.
Just make sure that you are storing any pasta in an airtight container and not just the packaging it comes in. That's because if any weevils are accidentally introduced into your pantry, they will infest all the rest of the dry foods you have that aren't airtight. They are often brought into your home via dry dog and cat food that was infested while in the grocery store or warehouse.
I put a small grain grater with my storage in case of lumps in salt and sugar or spices. Planning sure has helped in 2020. By the way wish you would do a segment directed at single women/widows. Being serious here, as you go thru life find a widowed man and combine resources. I had two neighbors who lost their spouses. They sold one of the houses and set up a home in the other.
One time I got a 50 pound bag of potatoes from a mom and pop shop on a quick run. Came home sat it down and roaches scattered! I dont know how I didnt notice in the store but they were sitting on the floor. It was awful trying to get rid of them, they were even in my car! I killed as many as I could right away but I missed some and that was enough to make it a problem!! So gross!
Deep freeze, that's a below zero degrees chest freezer, not your 32 degrees refrigerator freezer. At least 3 days. Great video. There is a trick the older folks down here in Alabama used to help shorten cooking time on dry beans. Just soak them in water overnight. Next morning, the beans will be swollen from water absorption and reduce the required cooking time dramatically.
Great tip! All hard beans should be soaked over night. Just to add to this tip, for those who have never cooked dry beans, know that you should NOT start cooking the beans in the same water they were soaked in. Always start with fresh water to cook them.

corn starch is also used for clotting blood. Personal experience, after my dog was attacked by a bobcat. the dog had an arterial wound actually shooting blood across the room. Called the vet and he said pack it with corn starch. Took probably half a pound pressed into the wound however, the dog was up and running around the entire next day. took her to the vet Monday morning. The vet washed the cornstarch off, blood started shooting across the room and he was like... I guess it was that bad. He sewed it up and the dog lived for another 5 years. CORN STARCH.
Just as an important note: while Maple syrup will keep indefinitely in its original container... its not as stable as honey. honey can be opened and re sealed and its still just as good- but maple syrup tends to degrade *once open*. also the Egypt ions did use "Starch" (and purified starch will keep) but not corn starch, as corn is purely an American crop

Not sure even that level of iodine will protect the thyroid. Discovered IOSAT tablets don't help older people.
Great video. Just a word if you please: corn starch comes from corn which was unknown to the ancient Egyptians. Corn came from the ancient Tolmecs in the Americas. As for maple syrup - once a container is opened, it should be refrigerated. That will insure a long, nutritious shelf life. Blessings ...

7:13 Oh for sure. However for rice to be stored it should be frozen for 3-4 days to kill any potential bug larvae or eggs. I guess some people say to freeze it for 5-7 days. Then another person said if you seal it in a Mylar bag with an oxygen absorbing pack it will kill any bugs/larvae.
Cornstarch will also stop bleeding in a cut, the way "Quick Stop" (for dogs) works. Another way to stop bleeding which I learned from a nice lady from India: Take a pure cottonball (NOT synthetic, must be real cotton) and burn it on a cookie sheet, etc, until it becomes charcoal powder. Make yourself a sourdough starter, keep it going forever, then as long as you have flour you have bread. Leave some grapes out til they have a faint dusting of natural yeast on them.
One of the only bad items I've ever found in the pantry is organic vanilla.

Baking soda is a good thing to have as well. Great for brushing your teeth, as an antacid and numerous other things.
I mix it with a little bit of cleaning vinegar to make a paste for cleaning pots and pans. It bubbles up a bit, but that hurts nothing.

When it comes to salt, one way to save space for your salt storage is to get slabs of salt, it's in it's densest state when in natural slabs (I know himalayan salt slabs can be gotten don't know if white salt is like that) so takes up a lot less space. Just vacuum seal it to keep moisture out. When it comes time to use it if you have a chisel and a good herb grinder or old mortar and pedestal then you can powder it into a usable state.

best survival food kits
try Franaar Spies Control Formula (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my cousin got great results with it.
Introverts/preppers like myself are content with what’s going
On the salt, remember your body also needs iodine, my brother almost died from lack of iodine, cause he started using sea salt w/o iodine Drs told him to use salt with it . Just wanted to warn folks.
David Vincent So true. Your thyroid needs the iodine.
iodide,not iodine,
curious one nope. Iodine.
@@barbaraness4507 it's not iodine....it's iodide....iodine is something else ❤️
@@barbaraness4507 I just googled it
You can use sugar and salt for a makeshift saline solution for blood loss in emergencies.
You shouldn't put usgar in your blood. There's only 5 grams of the stuff MAXIMUM in all the blood in a human body. You are going to trigger a crazy inflammatory amount of insulin.
I'd suggest adding organic apple cider vinegar with the mother to the list. I'm not sure if it's a forever food but it's very good for you (if you can consume it). I like to put a cap full in my tea with honey and tumeric.☺
tell us what chemical properties or vitamins apple cider vinegar contains that is good for you. malic acid is the only one I can think of that differs from other vinegars. Tell us how malic acid is good for us.
Always buy IODIZED salt, and use it occasionally, if you also use sea salt. You can get really sick if you are not getting enough Iodine, and it's not found in normal food- it has to be added artificially.
It has a 5 year shelf life because of iodine.
@@jc.1191 that might be because iodine becomes a gas and is expelled into the air. I don't think the salt goes bad, but the iodine itself disappears over time. I keep my iodized salt in airtight containers and never in an open salt shaker. i need the iodine and so do most of you. There are a slew of medical issues you can get from a lack of iodine and that is why it is put in salt.
@@genkiferal7178 Yeah, I'm also unsure if it's correct salt. I've used 20 year old iodized salt. Looked and tasted fine.
If there are black walnut trees in your area, iodine can be obtained from easiky processing the husk. It's one of the few land-based sources of iodine.
They usually drop to the ground en masse in September/October here in parts of the U.S. Look for a bunch of bright green 'fruit'.
If they are big and brainy looking, those are Osage Orange / hedge Apple seed balls. Also a useful tree with an interesting background.
@@wmluna381 that's great info. But, the husks are poisonous
Where did the Egyptian's get corn starch? Did they trade with native Americans?
Traded with 'em through them aliens.
The first McDonald's was in ancient Egypt

They had flight back then we've been lied to from birth
I also would consider buying condensed milk. It has 2 years shelf life, but can last far beyond it. I remember in USSR when we had food shortage, the store shelved had nothing but condensed milk. It is filling, sweet, it can be diluted with water. JMO. Thank you for the video, it is very informative. Starting my store now, too. 👋
I read that You can't use iodized salt to cure meat...it's gotta be regular salt. Also a trick to keep moisture out is to add some raw white rice inside the container maybe held inside a cheese cloth bag...it absorbs moisture. GOD BLESS.
Correct. Pickling/canning salt will.work.
Then again.. the body REALLY NEEDS Iodine also.. so find a way to keep that!
I’ve cured meat with iodized salt. Just don’t give it to people allergic to iodine.
Buy local raw honey not the mess from walmart
I love my bee lady it is a bit of a drive to get to her but it is worth it
All food from Walmart is poison
@Jaime Diaz. I sure agree with that. Besides local honey if taken every day - even just a teaspoon will boost your immune system and protect you during allergy season.
Troy Levi how?
@@koldwarSumpsing I'm not a fan of bottled drinks.but even if it was in glass it's full of other chemical's from treatment.you ever see them treat water.ya ever look at the ph level in water. anyways foods where do you start.gmo.pesticides.salt levels.sugar levels and all the other chemicals added to food or just that so many foods in stores are not even close to what you think it is.

THAT VINAGER IS THE BEST THING ON EARTH TO ELEMANTING RUST FROM YOUR RUSTED TOOLS JUST AMAZING STUFF .
Good point! Thanks Mike!
Definitely keep the instant coffee sealed. I live in a humid climate, and an opened jar was moldy when I got back to it.
Maybe drop a small moisture absorber in the jar?
I'm not a coffee drinker, but I keep a supply on hand for bartering. Starting to add to my alcohol pile, too. Thanks for the vid!
Cigarettes is also a great barter item during SHTF scenarios.
reempire888 wish I bought a bunch of cigs back in the 70's when I still smoked . .25 cents a pack. Think a carton was two or three bucks. I could sell then now and retire.
For people who like burning money, yes.
@@Gabdube lmao your not burning your money, your saving it. if shtf, your moneys only use will be to clean your ass, while everyone is gonna kill for one cigarette
@@Gabdube lol
Cigarettes are way to expensive to use for bartering. Will probably get ripped off in a trade.
adding a couple of lbs of beef jerky would be a plus
Slimeface definitely
Ooh yea that’s smart
Tom Didit but it holds good trade value if you want to get rid of it quickly
A mix of rice with chickpeas and various dried legumes will give you all the proteins and amino acids that humans need to survive, and is overall cheaper and more satiating. The only advantage of jerky is taste; it's an inefficient choice.
It's a great video one thing I could add is that I broke apart every bag of rice and my beans I proportioned them up into quarter pound and 1/2 lb proportions then I vacuum sealed them, I also have been dehydrating food and preserving food with salt keeping it vacuum sealed, one other thing that I do also is I put everything in a locked tote out of the Sun even a 5 gallon bucket works great but you can't penetrate light in and I also put water in certain foods with a anti moisture packs, the way to dry out of those packets is just put those in the microwave and they're ready to go and they're good forever, also keep your water out of sunlight as best as possible it keeps the plastic flavor down but even then you can still use it to wash yourself for you whatever you need to wash with it it may not it taste great but you can even hydrate with it
"Liquor will last forever" - not in my pantry! lol
Where then? Stored in your fat overweight gut you pig
Just in your liver as in cirrhosis!!
I vacuum seal my long term food in jars. I’ve drank instant coffee that had been vacuumed sealed for two years and it was fresh
Me too, I dehydrate a lot of fruits & veggies, ground meats and store this way. When we buy cuts of meat we vaccuum seal it before we freeze it, no more freezer burn!
Make yourself a sourdough starter, keep it going forever, then as long as you have flour you have bread. Leave some grapes out til they have a faint dusting of natural yeast on them. Then put them in a container with a little flour and water. Cover lightly. In a week you will have sourdough starter.
yes, yes, yes! Baking powder only works for about a year. Most expiration dates are a guide only, but it is true for baking powder.
a few years ago, I saw a video where a Russian peasant used young grape leaves on top of /inside her pickle jars, too. I think potato water can sometimes produce a type of yeast, but am not sure of it.
I never found liquid vanilla extract in Europe, So I learned how to make it. Much cheaper & easy to make. Buy a small bottle of vodka, splice a few vanilla bean pods legthwise and drop them into the vodka. Shake occassionally & voila, 1-2 months later, you have vanilla extract for all your baking needs.
Nice!
I have been making my own vanilla extract just like this for years. It is just as good, if not better than the real expensive stuff AND it is a lot, cheaper.
Sootch I am curious will pure vanilla extract from the 1980s or 1970s still be used if the bottles have not been opened yet?
Is it in a glass container? And, is it in alcohol? If yes, then yes it should be good♡♡♡
I’ve heard that pasta with eggs in them doesn’t last as long as plain pasta. And I’ve heard that the Jasmine rice is really good because it doesn’t take as much fuel to cook it and it tends to last longer. I never heard that about the iodine salt spoiling because of the iodine init! That’s good to know!! Thanks for the great tips 👍
Vinegar can also be used to store meat, especially pork. I know it's an acquired taste, but it's better than nothing. And ramen does go bad after time. Grains like flour, cornmeal, and oats can be stored, but you need to keep them in the freezer for a bit before packing away to kill any possible insect invaders.
Glad I know how to make great ol moonshine I think people will want to keep me around HAHAHA
Hej great info. I really love the schematic diagram of a weapon on your bench. I love it.
Sootch stores Hootch. 👍 Thumbs Wayyyy Up.
I laughed way harder at this comment than I should have... lmao.
Watch out for no iodine salt. Dr. told me to cut out salt and I did then I developed an Iodine deficiency. My pulse was weak and not steady. I was short of breath even sleeping in bed and could get no rest. I suspected this so ate some salt. My pulse got stronger within 15 minutes. Then I normalized.
Yes we need it but it wont keep more than 5 years. The iodine will dissipate.
@@jerrysmith372 Again, I'd love to see your source that shows that iodine dissipates in 5 years. Whether it does or not, some backup iodine would be good to have on hand anyway. Especially for Sanitys Void. Buy some iodine drops on Amazon, buddy. I'd say store whatever salt is cheapest then. Salt isn't going to go "bad," even if it does lose its iodine.
Hello from Kentucky...
Some great ideas there. Keep the great work your doing.
This is one of the best ENTERTAINMENTING shows on youtube.

I know this is an older video, but a note on those beans is that most of them are still viable. You could probably grow new plants from those dried beans even after a year or two.
Yes you can!!!!
Save-a-Lot has 20lb. bags of rice for $6.00 right now. Thanks for the video.
AD Homesteading I’ve been meaning to buy a couple of those
AD Homesteading rice is high in arsenic find the right ones and how to decrease arsenic
We rinse our rice well before and after we cook it. That removes a lot of the bad stuff.
Make sure to test a handful of it. China made rice out of plastic.
Thank you for your video. Regarding 5:10, the Egyptians used wheat flour rather than corn starch. The reason is because corn is actually maize which did not exist in ancient Egypt. Maize originated in Mexico thousands of years ago and was used in the Americas by the native Indians. It was Columbus who introduced maize, potatoes, tomatoes, cocoa, peppers, vanilla, bananas, pineapples, tobacco, squash, etc. to Europe.
RAW unfiltered honey is healthy. Processed is not healthy. RAW unfiltered honey can be purchased at Sam's wholesale club
Sloanirrigation or Costco wholesale
Instant ramen is deep-fried as part of the production process, the oil makes it go rancid pretty fast.
