Was any of this design sketched out first? Or just going free handed in the moment? Do you prefer to design/visualize in "rule of thirds" or Fibonacci. min 7:54 - I love the different camera angles to get the "unspoken" details regarding rock placement. The amount of time you spend just moving the camera around to get the shot, never mind starting and stopping the the creative flow.
It was inspired by a scape done by one of the ADA creators. I tend to use rule of thirds most of the time, mostly just place main piece of hardscape slightly left or right without over thinking it too much. It can be a bit disruptive moving the camera around but needs must if I want to give you guys better videos🙂

One question though how do have good oxygen levels with your drop checker that light, mine the moment it gets to that light greenish color my fish are already by the surface gasping for air. when i put it lower the pearling doesnt happen which makes me feel like the co2 is not getting to use properly. help...
Thank you so much🙂👍 I raise the lily pipe every night to agitate surface and raise oxygen levels. Or lower CO2 levels so drop checker is showing a darker green.
The issue with an iwagumi is that it only take a few weeks to reach the desired affect which is usually just a lush carpet. There’s no further development. Just weekly trimming. Where as a nature style is always evolving, having to ‘tweak’ the scape as the plant grow and mature at different rates. Which to me is far more enjoyable and the true essence of Aquascaping.
I am looking to do my next tank like this (iwagumi) , however I was thinking instead of grass I wanted to just use sand....lol wonder what trubble this is going to cause me.
I think that would be fine. I would add lots of details with varied sizes of stone, sand and gravel. Just ensure your light intensity/duration is dialed right down to avoid algae issues.

Love the scape, and prefer this style to the one carpet plant style. The scale is so dramatically different. To me, it's like driving across the Canadian prairies towards the Rocky Mountains. From a distance, it's awe inspiring, with the massive mountains, and the trees are like the carpet plants, and the scene is breath taking, Your scape is like driving through the mountains in a broad river valley. Massive rock outcrops with stands of trees at the base. I want to park the car and walk across the flat land to the trees and explore what's there, not just view from a distance. Involved in the scene, not just a static view. For those of us who love our livestock as much as the scape, I feel it is much more appealing, especially if you prefer keep your tanks long term, rather than rescaping them once or twice a year. An ever changing view of nature out you window, as opposed to a picture of that view on your wall.
One thing people forget is that not all fish species feel comfortabele in a open aquarium with bright light and no hiding spots. Its better to choose fish that arent skittish, and preferably live in open waters. Its unfair for the fish to only choose it cause of its colours
Footnote. Having taller plants in the back creates hiding spots. And thus more skittish species of fish could feel comfortabele in a scape like this one.

@@GEORDIESCAPER yea i feel it. i do similar style stuff for bottle terrariums (just moss and stone). when they're alone, they look pretty mediocre - when they are next to a lush or tropical one, they stand out. its kind of like more of an illustration of the skill of the scaper than the scape itself

i find expert level iwagumi to be strikingly beautiful - i find all other skill levels of iwagumi rather boring
This is more traditional style sanzon iwagumi. If I had just the one tank I would probably get bored of an iwagumi.
