Such a unique and beautiful film. I found a dvd 5-6 years ago and watched it. I have to watch it again and also explore more the cinema of Takeshi Kitano! Greetings from Greece, my friend!
I watched all Kitano's movies, but this one I watched... several tens of times. Somehow the movie did permanently break me in my youth when I watched it for the first time. It's difficult to explain. This is a very very very special work for me. Thank you for your analysis.
I read your comment many times! It’s great. I can really sense that this film is special for you!!! It is interesting too that you mention watching it in your youth… because your comment reminds me that this film reaches a wide range of ages of characters, from those who are in their elder years, to those who are in their younger years…. Thank you so much!!
I just finished watching this film for the first time absolutely blind to the director or anything including what it was even about (other than the fact there was Bunraku involved) and its genuinely one of the best surprise watches I've had in years. Thank you for this video because after watching I felt like I needed to just listen to someone make a clean cut analysis of this experience of a film. It's wonderful to hear about a little of symbolism and metaphors that flew over me on my first viewing.
Once again, I am honored to hear you speak on Takeshi Kitano (San?) (Sensei?) (Maestro?). As I contemplated my comment, you put my thoughts and feelings into words. I had heard being a celebrity in Japan is particularly difficult due to even more scrutiny given to the star and their personal life. May Mr. Kitano never be caught with his pants down in public.. It is obviously this lifetime of recognizing these strict rules that has led to Kitano wanting to have some sort of outlet for his soul via filmmaking, painting etc. I am already a huge fan and haven't seen any of his films (yet!). Thank you again for shining light on a new film that serves to one day help expand my film knowledge/fandom! Your passion for sharing cool movies is so admirable! Cheers, my friend! P. S. I picked up An Autumn Afternoon and Don't Look Now as my possibly last two Criterion sale items. I look forward to having the opportunity to enjoy those. Each sale has been better than the last for me. Have a great day, Daisuke!
Thank you so much my dear friend. Yes, I think there is a kind of perspective that he has that is made even more powerful when one considers his many roles in the public spotlight. Thank you my friend and I hope you are well.
Hello LD and thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it. Kitano is one of my favorite filmmakers, and also the Pioneers set is such a great one. Cheers and warmest regards.
Thank you so much for your delicate review of the movie. I've looked for this movie for several years till I finally found it 5 years ago. when I was a teenager I watched this movie randomly on one of the Iranian TV channels, at that time it was fascinating and perplexing for me, I asked myself why this movie was like this. why the emotions in this movie were that much bold, and also the beauty of the scenery captured my eyes. So when I become a college student I started looking for the name of this movie that I've seen a long time ago, and after several tries I finally found it. since then it has become one of the best romantic movies I've ever seen and I recommend it to everyone who wants to dig deep into the nature of love and relationship. I've also found the works of Terrence Malick similar to this movie and I highly recommend the fan of Dolls' movie to watch "To The Wonder" by Terrence Malick, I promise it will hit them hard!
Hello and thank you so much for this. And that is a really interesting comparison between this film and To the Wonder. Very interesting indeed. Cheers and warmest regards.
I’m really enjoying your daily comments on Kitano. You inspired me to seek out a streaming version of Outrage Coda which is free to Amazon Prime members in the US, my first film of his for me. I enjoyed the twist and turns, the double crosses were funny as well as some of the performances. Will definitely check out more. I just came back from Barnes and Noble with the Essential Fellini in hand. What a glorious package this is (!).
Thank you so much Roger. I really appreciate it. And yes, I cannot wait to talk about Outrage Coda, which is a really fascinating one and one that has I think a lot of ties with his cinema past.
What I like the most about this one is the fact that it gets divided into stories (sort of like an anthology). Another solid film from Takeshi Katano and one that he surprisingly doesn't act in. These videos make me want to go out and get these!
I was lucky enough to see this film when it first came out, in the cinema. The juxtaposition of heightened sensitivity or aesthetic ( could be a Japanese thing idk) and deep feelings hit me hard. Kitano has said that both his parents were strict disciplarians with his father also abusive. You can see rejection and isolation as motif in this movie that maybe stems from his childhood.
Thank you so much for this great comment! I love the way you describe the notion of a juxtaposition of tones, and yes the aspects of isolation and loneliness and rejection, hitting the characters very hard here and other films as well.
@@DaisukeBeppu You’re welcome and thanks for discussing the movie was so interesting to hear your perspective. I just discovered your channel because once every few months or so I listen to the soundtrack of it yt and other music of Joe Hisaishi, today your video appeared.
