Showdown At Mount Carmel

- “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” 1 Kings 18:21
It was a time of great distress in ancient Israel. The kings of Israel had become increasingly wicked, and perversion and debauchery were rampant. The people of God had given up the worship of God and turned to the worship of Baal and Ashtoreth. God had had enough and sent His prophet Elijah to the king.
Because of all the wickedness, God caused Elijah to pronounce judgement. There would be no rain for the space of three and a half years. Drought and famine came upon God’s disobedient people. For that entire time, God hid Elijah and took care of him.
Then, God sent Elijah back to the king and to the people, and there was a showdown. It was the prophet of God versus the prophets of Baal. What happened next is one of the most spectacular events in all the Bible. God showed Himself to be almighty and powerful, and the prophets of Baal were destroyed.
As it was in that day, so it is today. The people of God have largely given up the true worship and have gone after other gods, and it is killing us as a people. As Elijah challenged the people that day, even so do I challenge God’s people today. If the LORD be God, follow Him!
If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the Lord, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not be led away and bemoan.
There is another showdown coming. Are you ready for that day?

Oh how we need godly leaders. Wicked leaders take us further away from God.
National sin has national consequence. They were reaping the bitter fruits of their sin with drought and famine.
Let us pray for our leaders.
Help us to be part of the remnant.
Come near to the godly leader and help repair the broken down alter.
Another showdown is coming.
