As someone who relies on my service dog daily, this video kinda pisses me off. It's not a bad message, other than the vest thing - service dogs are not required to wear vests AT ALL. The only reason we use one is for all the fucking idiots we encounter daily. The part that pisses me off, though, is the way this is presented is just telling more assholes who don't need a service dog to just go buy a vest on Amazon so they can take their untrained asshole pet in public. We encounter those all the time too. The only saving grace is that it becomes instantly obvious which dog is actually trained to be a legit service dog in those situations.
Steve-O also left out a VERY VERY important point - the ADA is not a blanket protection. Even a bonefide service dog can be asked to leave a business if it's not behaving. If a legit service dog starts making a scene, barking, interacting with others, etc., they can be refused service from anywhere & trespassed. The ADA does NOT protect untrained dogs.
If you don't actually NEED a service dog, don't buy a fucking vest. For all of us who actually need them, those people are making our lives harder.

agreed 100%. We’re trying to get a service dog for my son, he is special needs and elopes. Through this journey I have learned a lot and there are so many people who use ESA as service animals and it’s not the same. Many videos I’ve seen ESA’s distract service animals from their jobs. Yes, you can train your own service animal. My friend did for her mom who has Muscular dystrophy after her previous service dog was diagnosed with cancer. Some dogs are there for “comfort” for people with PTSD but they’re also trained to give DPT in the case of a panic attack.

I agree as well with @leebrokus5069
I too have a service dog (she is a SCOTTISH TERRIER)who helps me/warns me of a blood pressure issue or blood sugar. I have both problems. She also does pressure therapy. She will speed up her walking to deliberately get me out of a specific area until she can feel/pick up my heart has started to slow down. I’ve had 2 open heart surgeries and a split liver transplant……so I want to necessarily want to share all of that? I don’t think I should have to. And with all of that and other issues I’ve dealt with such as PTSD and having to take care of my dying mother while dealing with an addict brother physically and psychologically abusing me all at the same time……at the end of the day……why would I wanna share that with just anyone.
And to top it off you have other people who will slap a vest on their dog and call it a service dog when clearly it’s not. Also another way to actually tell the animal is actually trained, is that they will behave and not charge/walk up to/sniff everything.
And then you have other goobers who believe service dogs are ONLY GERMAN Shepard’s AND LABS….which in the police department they do usually use mostly German Shepard’s and German Malinois, and they will use LABS for bomb dogs and drug dogs.
Any dog that is able to perform a service that helps the person that is handling the dog.
I.e like I said I have a Scottish terrier. She actually started alerting on me 3-4 months after my mom died. I am terminally ill as stated by my docs. I’m treated at Keck USC.
But nothing angers me more to see a person who has a dog and they claim it’s a service dog, and clearly not as it’s trying to charge after my dog with its mouth open at the ready🤦🏼‍♀️😤😤over stupid people

Telling your massive audience that all you need to make your dog a service dog, is to lie, might not be doing actual service dogs a favor. The more people bring their poorly trained "service" dogs everywhere, the more incidents will happen. Eventually, somebody's kids face will get ripped off on a plane, which will probably lead to a ban on all dogs in airplane cabins. Some people actually need dogs (seeing-eye, seizure dogs). Don't ruin it for them.

the “you can train your own dog” is because of how broad the application of service dogs are, everything from mobility to allergies to diabetes to seizures to ptsd to autism and beyond.

Getting a dog is already incredibly expensive any registry would only create more barriers for the disabled in the US. We have enough already.
Also service dogs usually only get a handful of good years where they can work depending on the breed. The cost can add up quickly if you are unable to train your own dog.

    • @violetscreaming

Worked the gate at a food truck festival where a lady said her dog was a service animal. I knew this dog had no formal training whatsoever, but I also knew the law, so I let them in. 3 hours later, the dog attacked a random person (unprovoked, to the owners own admission). Security contacted police, who proceeded to contact animal control, who came to the fairgrounds with a truck specifically designed to euthanize dangerous animals on the spot. If not for the victim, bloody arm and all, pleading with the officer from the medical tent to spare the dogs life, that dog would've been killed right then and there, due to its owners reckless abuse of the system.

If the dog is acting out in any way shape or form, ANY ONE can ask the person to handle their dog and/or leave. Tasking is the difference between pets and trained working animals. Man, Steve-O’s 100% correct. I suffer from CPTSD and OCPD, and have an actual ESA, and whenever I see ass-hats in public, with their dog in a red vest, I just want to call them out as liars; I spent 5 years working as a restaurant supervisor, I can confirm only 1 guy ever had a support animal that was real, and it’s because he was totally blind… the others were just tool-bags that wanted to bring a scared and nervous animal into a restaurant, because they lacked common sense or decency.
Service dogs are mainly used for people with mobility issues, diabetes, or blindness, and are usually larger breeds, like labs or German shepherds… your mini-doxen is not a guide.
An ESA is also a totally broken system, as well, but it’s funny, because I’ve seen people get scammed by sites, by paying for “paperwork”… ha, you deserve to lose money if you’re willing to cheat a system. Your primary care physician is generally who signs an animal as an ESA, for leases and the like, and it costs literally nothing.
As a huge advocate for actual mental health help, I wish more companies and organizations recognized that those red vests and cards are a bogus scam, and you should have to have a copy of your animal’s actual service training. If you think I’m wrong - get bent.

You should be able to train your own dog but it should be able to pass certain basic steps to be called a service animal. In Canada there are 2 ways to get a service animal.
    1) Apply for and receive one through either a GDSDA (Canadian)~ OR ~IGDF and ADI (International) registered business.
    2) Pass a training test (with your dog) run by a business with those same certifications, OR OUDT test.
The test is 40 tasks and costs $200.
Of course, if your service animal was certified outside of Canada then they are still protected under our laws. However, I will say that every service animal I've met here has been extremely well trained/behaved.
It's not hard to have regulations that ultimately protect disabled people by keeping the public trust in service animals high. I've never had to question or kick out anyone with a service animal while working, only told people who brought in straight-up pets or "emotional support animals" that they are not allowed (yes even if friendly, I'm sad about it too). Steve-Os dog would likely pass regulations here for service dog training.
That said, the training/certification is expensive if you don't do it yourself so it is definitely a barrier for many. The government does however sometimes help out where there is financial need (for someone with a registered disability).

Read one where a woman bought a small Service animal vest online to put on her chiuhauhu just so she could take it into any shop she wanted and if the shop owners protested against it she would threaten to sue which usually made the owners back down
But of course she had her dog on the table and feed it food from her plate and it would bark whenever someone even walks past them
So when the owners meet a actual service dog that is just sat/lying under the table they're happy to learn the difference between a actual Service animal compared to one that just has the harness for show

Gotta say, it’s dishonorable that like those fake vets and fake homeless, people will use dogs for their own benefits in gaining positive public reaction. Not to mention, I feel bad for the dogs beings used as a tool rather than being a compassionate buddy to be interacted positively by others. Anyway, time these laws make changes considering there are moments an unlucky bystander would get too close to comfort, and get bitten again by a dog that’s untrained to be a service dog.

People don't understand how necessary these dogs are for those who actually NEED them. Actual Service Dogs are trained for thousands of hours, over several years. They are trained for Public Access and tested to see if they are fit for the job. If they're deemed unfit to perfom their tasks in public, then they're pets.

I have a rat terrier who reliably detects low blood sugars in the humans around him. He's had no formal training, but he detects it well before the people do, and in a few cases has been known to literally stamp on a person's chest to wake them up when their sugars drop in their sleep. My elderly parents love him for that.
But no formal training, and he is rather reactive to other dogs (comes from having been attacked out of nowhere by people's dogs who fail as pet owners and let them run around without leashes/closed yards) and often people (he hates hoods and large hats, and dislikes puffy jackets), when outside his 'safe spaces'. We would NEVER consider trying to claim him as a service animal, even though he'd do a convincing job absent other dogs or people messing with him.
Fake service dogs, and people taking untrained, sensitive dogs and other pets into close proximity with a bunch of other people, are at best leaving a mess for others to deal with, but tragically, when something happens, they get a fine while their dog loses it's life and someone else gets permanent scars. DON'T DO THAT CRAP.

If someone's animal is for an emotional need, then they are not allowed to enter places like restaurants, grocery stores, etcetera because someone's emotional need doesn't superseded the health needs of the public at large. I have two ESA’s due to the fact that I cannot pay 240 in pet rent every month (I have 3 animals). I need these animals for emotional support with my hard job, and I couldn’t fathom giving them up because some greedy landlord chose to charge 80$ per pet per month, plus 300 dollar deposits per pet. PER PET. My animals are non destructive, I clean up after them when we go on walks. I should no have to pay that price for them/give them up every time I move. So I got two registered online. However, I do not bring them with me where normal animals aren’t allowed! They are not trained as service animals. So no, I will not take them into a grocery store/restaurant, etc. I hate it when people bring their aggressive ass dogs to places they shouldn’t be. Me and my own dog have been attacked many times by off leashed/coated “Service” animals. I’m sick and tired of this. I shouldn’t have to be scared of every dog that walks my way

She’s a very clearly well trained pup. I see no issue. The issue are the people who bring their absolutely insane untrained barking nut case animals with them.

Service dogs do have to be incomplete control and calm. Do try to keep that in mind

There is a million people who have said my dog would never bite any one and it happens. Nobody knows what their dog will do, even though they would love to think it would never happen.

If Steveo brought a shelter dog out at a show and I'm in the audience- I would take it personally as a sign to finally go and adopt another. ADOPT DONT SHOP! Let's get those dogs into loving homes before promoting more "backyard breeding"!! Much Respect Steveo!

If we can require a handicap parking permit we can require your dog be trained.

I hate that so many people that have no business doing this, do this and then it gives a bad rep for people that actually need a service animal

I know a guy with a service dog, and he's a drunk idiot, so I'm not surprised at how easy it is. He does have a well behaved dog, and he does take good care of it, but that's about as much respect as I can give him.

My mom got her dog listed as a therapy dog. The dog is terribly trained and pees on anything and everything. Fortunately she's a reasonable person and doesn't take him everywhere.

Individual people do not use therapy dogs.
