- Actor, comedian and musician Matt Berry invites music journalist Pete Paphides to have a root through his collection of bizarre, uniquely British records. Star of The IT Crowd, and more recently Toast Of London which he writes with Father Ted co-writer Arthur Mathews, Matt Berry released his 4th studio LP 'Music For Insomniacs' earlier this year.

The nervous rubbing of Berry's hands tells me he doesn't like people handling the vinyl
I dont blame him...That guy has no clue how to handle a record with the required care!!! Look at him clamping his big sweaty thumbs all over them!!!
@@LusciousTwinkle I thought the same thing. If anyone handled just one of my LP's with their any of their fingers or thumbs on those hallowed grooves (including either side of any of my CD's / DVD's or Blu-rays) that would be it. That would be the only one I would let them touch, end of.
Felt like raymond from rain main. He was gonna lash out at any minute. Put them back the way you found them!!!
I was watching, thinking the exact same thing,
Everything about his body language is screaming discomfort.
Also, no-one likes watching someone put the needle down on their record, *they* *never* do it right.
“Write da theme toon, sing da theme toon”
I could watch a 30 minutes version of this; wonderful to see passion shared.
Love to see him just talk records for hours!
This was way too fucking brief.
Just 30?
Matt Berry had just released his 4th album; hence his crack about how an artists first 3 albums are always their best.
Hasn't he done six albums?
@@ThreadBomb At the time of this interview he had done four.
@@ThreadBomb Eight albums. Opium, Witchazel, Kill the Wolf, Music for Insomniacs, The Small Hours, Television Themes, Phantom Birds, and The Blue Elephant, which just came out a few weeks ago. Nine if you include Night Terrors, and ten if you include his very first album, Jackpot, which from what I understand he refuses to release because he thinks it's rubbish.
That's one helluva Record collection Toast
I know right! It's great! Never thought I would like folk music, but know I'm intrigued!
Ray Fucking Purchase!
@@unclestaple Ray "Bloody" Purchase
haha 🤣🤣... nice one
this is what i love hidden gems in vinyl. matt is just ultra talented. i love his comedy bits. but also his talent as a musician.
Randy Eldridge 8
Surely there should be more of this? I want to know what other gems Matt has in his collection!
One man I'd love to have a pint with.
that's strange I have been thinking for ages I would love to eat boiled Octopus
Yes he's brilliant isn't he. Iove his vocal rhythm when he delivers lines in his different comedy shows. See here how he is more relaxed not working from a script.
Which one?
Definitely. Would be a lovely guy to meet. Top bloke
Absolute legend
I love Matt Berry, October sun is possibly the best song Ive ever heard. I adore that melody.
Halfway through this I started thinking "is this on telly? It's really good, this can't be RUclips".
I'm not really into vinyl, I only watched it for Matt Berry, but I bow to both the huge knowledge on display in the video, but also the excellent production and cinematography.
Got to be honest, I could listen to this all day.
I could listen to him talk music for hours
Up my street (UK) = up my alley (US)
You're welcome
Nice Interview. Pete Paphides could almost be a Toast of London name.
"Matt before we start, can you just say: Oh Yesss!"
I love Matt Berry! He is really funny and not a bad songwriter.. I wish Toast of London would carry on, same with Snuff Box!
They're making Toast of Tinseltown later this year. It's gonna be Toast trying to make it in Hollywood.
The only bad thing about this, is thats too short! Great video, maybe you could do a second installement. I reckon Matt Berry has loads of other obscure records.
When Matt Berry talked about his love of Mike Oldfield he became 1000% more badass in my book.
Same man, same. It's not like every other day you meet someone who knows and appreciates Mike Oldfield.
check this great write up of Brian 'Butch' Royal at the Publand Variety Show 1974 ...
"And then, as the final artist entranced, the well-known Gremlins of Publand struck as if dead on cue! For from the moment singer BRIAN "BUTCH" ROYAL launched into "Beautiful Day" the hand microphone crackled, died, blurted, hummed, and did all in its electrical power to thwart what the singer had set his heart on, the performance of his life.
To the great relief of the willing audience, however, the artist remained unperturbed switched mikes offered "C'Mon over to my house," and followed up with three absolute showstoppers in "Solitaire" "Danny Boy," and (a nice false tab here) "Somewhere over the Rainbow."
At the close of his performance the audience simply erupted, with "Butch'' so deeply touched by the response that he was nearly in tears! But oh yes, they are beautiful songs; and they were beautifully sung!
The accompanists for the entire show were the very competent musicians of THE BRYAN WILLIAMSON BAND. And with a happy Ray Donn joining the cast for the final curtain, so came to an end the 1974 "Publand "Show"... "

The first three Kate Bush records are great, but the 4th and 5th (The Dreaming and Hounds of Love) are among the absolute best!
Hounds of Love made me want to check out her other stuff
Red Shoes, Sensual World, and Hounds are my personal favourites.
The theme song to Toast of London is so good.
Matt Berry plays "Staines Morris" LP during interview...
*Arnold Rimmer has entered the chat*
I’ve got that Morris On album. Would love to see a longer version of this chat
Steven this is Clem Fandango... can you hear me?
Yes, I can hear you, Clem Fandango.
Yes I can hear you when you press the bloody button.
I bloody hear you clem
I fuckin’ dare you to say that again!
Yes, yes, yeees, YES!, YES!, YEEEEEESSSSS!
Can you IMAGINE if Tarantino had used Dennis Waterman instead of Stealers Wheel?!
So money supermaaaaaaaarket! I'd love to see the rest of this interview!
"Kate Bush" "yeah, the first three albums" *starts playing single from fifth Kate Bush album*
Joe McLaren interesting to say the first three albums were her best. Hounds of Love and The Dreaming. Easily her strongest albums with track after track holding your attention without fail. I even don’t mind listening to Rolf Harris playin* the didg
@@nickdryad Yes, he's just plain wrong. After the amazing debut, her best albums are numbers 4 and 5.
*******
I was hoping Matt Berry was going to drop an obscure fact about every record they had..
But they missed my favorite obscure fact about Ronnie Hazlehurst who wrote the theme to 'Some Mothers..'
The 'Some Mother's Do 'Ave Em' tune is actually made from Morse Code of the name of the TV show!
Wow looked it up and it's true. And apparently he got the princely sum of £30 for his efforts :D
Very cool bit of trivia there. Cheers
I got Tubular Bells on vinyl from Cob Records in Porthmadog. It's great to hear the might Berry appreciates it.
Says he likes the first three Kate Bush albums; They put a mid '80s mainstream hit of hers in the background, from her fifth album.
Kate Bush was always mainstream.
Welcome to 2019
@@Molotovjack Mainstream? Kate Bush? No.
In the UK she's had 24 top 40 singles including one number 1 for Wuthering Heights and all her albums have gone top 5. You're probably too young to remember but she was big from the late 70s into the 90s. I love her by the way as she's one of my favourite artists.
I find it impossible to take anyone who says they love Kate Bush seriously if they do not say "The Dreaming" is their favourite record
I love how Matt is basically permanently hungover
Matt's discomfort watching someone else put their "dirty fingers" on his rescued gems is comedy in its own right.
Yes but does he have DOOORAN DOOORAN?
Matt Berry turned me onto Cluster, forever grateful for that.
I love that casual placing of Music For Supermaaaaarrrrrkets... just propped there like it's the real thing.
Tubular Bells isn't too obscure. Has sold like 15 million copies.
Being called despicable by Matt Berry would be quite the accolade!
All hail Brian Royal... the rightful King of old Ingerrrrr Land! ⚔️🇬🇧
His accent is working class, unlike the characters he plays.
That's a very middle class accent
No it isn't, unless he's affecting a working class accent, in which case he's doing a good job.
@@canturgan he drops a few ts here and there but that's just a London middle class accent imo. Would his accent stick out more in a working class spoons or in a yummy mummy cafe?
Maybe if you're from Surrey!
He's from a village just outside Bedford. I went to lower school with him then he went to a private school. If only I had of done, I'd of been a millionaire instead of a thick poor minion.
Could watch this all day. ✌🏼️
More of this, please.
Reynholm is a boss IRL too! Faaaaatheerrrrr!
Morris On obscure?? That's Richard thompson and Ashley hutchings baby!
something about "take my hand" immediately makes me want to chug my drink, every time. what a beauty
Exactly how I imagined he'd live.
I can see where he gets his inspiration
For some reason I think a conversation between Berry and Ricky Gervais would be epic. Am I crazy?
Most underrated musician in Britain today. I wish Matt Berry was my older brother
Welcome to 2021. It’s great
Wheres his copy of In the Court of the Crimson King???
4:49 Who knew that Ron Atkinson made an album.
FAAAARTHEERRR!!!!
This got me into Morris On and Son of Morris On
based on original melodies whistled by garth marenghi
Dennis Waterman album? Great bloody purchase if you ask me
nickdryad Ray Purchase ? 😂
Today I found out Matt Berry was a musical scholar. He is cool af.
Matt berry is a thousand more times more interesting than the character he always plays
I've been really into Richard Thompson recently and just got Morris on, found a 1st pressing black island label copy plus they had son of Morris on too so had to get both.
This is just marvellous! It's what should be about.
Me : looks at Brian royal cover.
My Brian: thats terry tibbs !
Does anyone know if Brian Royal has any dates coming up?
This is gold
He has the Soundtrack to “Moon”!!!! Love that Soundtrack, bought that the day after I saw the movie
Well, his voice is featured in the film after all.
@@LanceVanceDance84 I’ve seen that film multiple times before I ever knew of Matt but I don’t remember his voice. What part? The end with the reporters? I know the robot was Kevin Spacey
@@geneawisea2708 I was mistaken about it being just his voice as it's been years since I last watched it, but he played Overmeyers, one of Sam's bosses in the video messages he receives.
Matt Berry's vinyl collection makes me feel better about the oddities I have in mine. No cross dressing Morris dancers though. Although we both agree on the question Does Humour Belong In Music?! 🤪🎵💥
Brian "Butch" Royal IS David Brent.
I LOVE matt berry!
Don't think Morris On deserves to be in the "weird & obscure" category, pretty mainstream in its day , with the mighty Richard Thompson et al !
Isnt the cover of Tubular Bells shown in this vid the cover of one of the remasters or re-recordings later on and NOT the original?
Wait - was that a young Richard Thompson on that last record? It looked like him, circa about 1969.
legend has it matt was the friend who stole the vinyl from bedford library
Matt Berry and vinyls!
The records are not obscure at all, I really was expecting some unknown gems
this was wicked
My collection is pretty similar and includes an amazing Peter Wyngarde album which features a song called 'Rape', years before Nirvana's 'Rape Me'.
Klytus! Bring me the bore worms...a smash single that would make
Extremely interesting.
I wonder if they made “Morris On Hotel” album?
‘* *Youu Ahnd Hee Were, Buddies, Weren’t Youu..?* * ...Need I say more, need I say more.’ -Todd Rivers
Bon Jo-viiii and Lady Gagarrrrrrrrrrrrr
Ga-Garrr
He doesn't like The Dreaming or Hounds of Love?
doctor Sanchez!
I don't think many would get that reference but I'm pretty sure Garth Marenghi's Darkplace was where I first became aware of Matt Berry through a friend who then put me onto The Mighty Boosh.
I adore Dark Place, a mere 6 episodes of pure TV gold which IMHO is the perfect combination of concept, scripting, casting, acting, humour, slow motion action, faux drama (goes back to concept) and in someways the soundscape is even better and I reguarly re-watch and listen to the soundscape including Matt Berry's One Track Lover :)
Dennis waterman... write the theme tune sing the theme tune.
Not sure Matt or Pete quite realised that Richard Thomson was on that Morris On album.......
Wow Matt Berry has even more embarrassing records than I have.....I'm talking about Dennis Waterman, not Mike Oldfield, obviously,
Who is he talking about at 3:40- Johnny Trunk? I need to know more
Jonny Trunk
How does one tune a crossbow?
Need toast series 4!
God his music is so radical, and obscure.
GREAT !
I've got that Comedy Themes album!
i got that bang on a drum record from a charity shop for 50p great score great record think it has been sampled a couple of times
The last time I went to Bedford Library I got my bike nicked 😆
Have you checked outside Matt Berrys house?
I thought it was funny that he doesn't have a super high end turntable. Which is cool cause I have the same one, but he did change out the head
Dennis Waterman made stuck in the middle with you feel hella violent/aggro ... there again Rula Lenska
Love the Leonard Cohen nod
I thought "A Royal Occasion" meant it was some sort of celebratory album issued to commemorate a royal wedding.
What's the song at the start?
Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, 3 million plus copies sold so far? Yes very obscure.
Kate Bush, first 3 albums and the "woodland folky pastoral" feel. Plays an almost disco song from her 5th album. The person who titled and edited this video is a berk.
That said, Matt's got good taste in music. Even spotted a Jean Michael Jarre bootleg in one pile.
Then we have the journalist ironically snickering like some sort of hipster tosser over a perfectly decent Dennis Waterman record.
Bang on a Drum? Very good 70's kid's LP complete with a killer drum break which at one point meant it was changing hands for £100+ a time but thankfully seems to have levelled off at more reasonable £5 (I paid £1, £0.50 and £0.50 for my three copies, two of which were long gone trading fodder) Moderately obscure but a lot of people do know about it.
Brian Royle. Done right that kind of stuff is wonderful and unique but you have to plough through dozens of mediocrities to find the any sort of gem. In fact save yourself the time, money and legwork and pick up both volumes of "Working Man's Soul" instead.
Not got that BBC themes compilation. Would snap it up for a couple of quid or less.
Morris On! Great choice, though frankly I prefer Morris On 2. Rise Up Like the Sun by the Albion Band is another great album kind of in kind of the same vain.
Actually, Tubular Bells has sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Yes, quite obscure!
Jeff Ferguson That doesn't surprise me at all, I just made a conservative guestimate. Turns out I was way to conservative.
God you’re pretentious
@@JackT13 Pretentious? Moi!?
Morris On, Toast!
I adore Matt Berry, he looks like a modern day Neanderthal Man....
NO ONE MORE TALENTED ON THE PLANET LOVE YOU MATT
That's not how you hold album sleeves. Ouch, don't crease the spine!
UGH! Dude, stop putting your fingers on the records!!
You're not wrong...a pet peeve, that one...
You haven't lived until you've heard 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly', by Jamie & His Cordovox!!
